Every successful person in the music industry carefully constructs a brand for themselves. They all know how to pull our strings and appeal to the mythologies and images that we want. Bruce is the master at this -- he is constantly reworking his image and brand. He experimented w/ various images and personnas and this one that we hear worked for a long time -- he's now modified it to where he's the older statesman, introspective singer-songwriter dylan-esque figure.

This Bruce rap is pretty contrived and silly. But whenever you have a great artist that isn't micromanaged by image consultants and PR people like today, things like this can and did happen. Not a big deal, really. Also this was during the last days of labels and promoters giving artists true autonomy over their shows. It's not like he was doing it on the albums, just part of the show. Give the guy a break. Bruce and E Street will always be seminal. And I'm from CA. Never even set foot in NJ
It doesn't surprise me that you (Stern) and your sidekicks make fun of a guy who's fans have been incredibly loyal and understand what he is talking /singing about. You can only wish you were all admired as much; he's got more class than you have in your little finger. You are a bunch of assholes and never have been funny.
hahaha ok take it easy superbruce, no one's interested in your opinions you fuckin entitled fanboy, theres a reason springsteen is as popular as he is, it's the same reason soulja boys popular, people for the most part have an incredible taste for bad music. you clearly don't like the stern show, so what in the fuck are you doing listening anyway?
i'm not an average springsteen fan, but i think his performances get better with every band. most recently the seeger sessions and live in dublin were his best recordings imo. this is funny
Dont forget Bruce grew up during the 60s when guys his age were being drafted to Vietnam and Freehold was working class area and his dad was frequently out of work so his stories have some merit. The guys in Bon Jovi grew up in Sayerville when it was a working class area so his has merit to.Both of those guys wanted out of the bleary lives that they had and thats why they tried to do it through their musical abilities.
@BobReidy again my Parents grew up with Bon Jovi, and they dislike the way he cares himself. That doesn't mean it wasn't "tough" but that Bon Jovi and Bruce overreact like they're martyrs. I know people who also grew up in Freehold in the exact same time and area, and don't claim to have half the drama. I understand the expression of pain through art, but they both behave like they were martyred.
Obviously they are not the only people who made it out of a working class area and bettered their lives through struggle and hard work. They do make it like they were the only one.
I see what you mean about it being "tough" to.Other people have grown up working class and had it tough and got out of it to.In fact, others have had it worse that made it out and a better life. They are not the only ones from a working class background who wanted out who had to work had to get out of it.

So true! i like Springsteen but that rap he gives is a bit over the top. you would think the guy grew up in freakin Biafra or Cambodia!

This is spot on. You would think he grew up in Appalachia. Think of a song like "My Hometown." The guy was a first class image maker.

Tell me this intro and the key change doesn't make that the best version of "The River." I listen to this version *just* for the story.
I'll tell you, I keep my Sirius/XM stuck on one channel and it sure as hell ain't Howard's.

I love Howard but I hate when he takes something funny that Artie says and says the same thing 2 minutes later but changes the words around a little.
