  • to lastros88: The language is Maori, a native dialect of New Zealand. The title means "they are agitated" refering to the waters of the Waiapu, a river in the north island near East Cape. It's a love song dating back to around World War I.

  • wonderful song!!!!

whats the language of the song?

and what does the title mean?

  • It's a Maori song called 'Stormy are the Waters' :)

  • The language is Maori. It is a song about forbiden love.

  • The language is Maori, the language of the indiginus New Zelanders

Translation of the first part from the CD-cover of Hayley Westenra's CD "Pure":

Pokarekare Ana refers to Stormy Waters.

Stormy are the waters of restless Waiapu

If you cross them, girl they will be calmed

Oh girl, Come back to me, I could die of love for you.

I hope this answers your question?

Kia Ora and Have A Happy Christmas My Friend.

  • @lastros88 it's in Maori--native language of NZ-where the lovely Hayley is from!! The title means something along the lines of "Come back to me, Love"

  • @lastros88: The language is Maori (aboriginal New Zealander). Search for another video of Hayley Westenra which has subtitles for the translation.

  • Brilliant singing. I love the dress. She reminds me of Charlotte Church, another talented and wonderful singer!

  • oh my god at 2:42 its the guy from the go campare advert !!!!!

    AWSOME!

  • @minispike0000 huh?

  • i didnt expect aled jones to announceate the maori words correct! thought he did a good job

    kapai!

  • Beautiful! One of the better versions I've heard!

  • It's not about the video but when the camera centres on the choir especially the lady with the high voice if you look at the man in the background I'm sure he's the one off the 'Go Compare' advert on theTV, he's even got the moustache.

  • Simply... Beautiful!!

Two perfect voices in a Awesome interpretation

  • the best version of this song, amazing

its a shame there was such awkward chemistry between aled and hayley

  • I've heard this song many times but this is by far the best version! Aled is Welsh yes :) Does anybody know where abouts they performed this song??

  • This was in the Royal Albert Hall, London at the 2003 Classical Brit Awards

  • This was at the Classical Brits 2003, held in the Royal Albert Hall, London

  • Looks like the Royal Albert Hall in London.

  • This was at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2003, at the Classical Brit Awards

  • classical brit awards!

  • This was beautifully done by both, a gorgeous rendition of a much loved song. And the pronounciation not bad either, for the style it is sung in and i think Aled is Welsh? Bravo!

  • dai iawn

    well done

    diolch Aled

    xxxorange hawkxxx

  • 4:10 --- he's holding her by the WRIST?? oh c'mon!! Awkward moment.

  • Great singers! BUT...awkward video. Starting with the opening when she walks on stage and his kiss is heard all over Europe while she sorta stands there stilted and stiff.

2:17 - He tries to hold her hand...? So awkward...

  • I'm with you, DanielGardner, VERY awkward. And Hayley gets this treatment from nearly all the male singers. Russell Watson (who I like) was slightly better when they sang this, but you could tell Hayley was uncomfortable there as well.

(And I don't care HOW many "thumbs down" I get.. it's the truth! I'm part Welsh but I know how to be respectful.)

  • It was at the Classical Brit Awards in May 2003 (in the RHA, as mentioned of course by Tassl3off)

Two stunning voices in Aled and Hayley!

  • his voice is amazing.

  • Tassl3hoff - That is the Royal Albert Hall in London. Fantastic venue.

  • siobhain

I cried when I heard this - I miss my son who now lives in New Zealand

  • These two go well together. They have similar singing styles

  • such a beautiful song:-)

  • Aled looks a bit like Mike Oldfield.

  • Hayley - the voice of an angel nuff said!

  • The only problem with Aled's pronounciation is that the pronounciation of his T's and K's are too harsh for our language. They're usually said softly T's. But he has a nice voice.

  • I agree with Tihirahi

  • I think this was the first time Aled has sung in Maori, as he's bilingual in his native Welsh as well as English.

You have a beautiful language Tihirahi.

  • yeah in welsh we have a tendency to say all the letters quite harsh - u have a very interesting language!

  • This is brilliant!

  • iaorana icom from tahiti i love music it's a wonderfull song mauruuru

  • Waw ! ^o^

  • I like it but her duet with Russell Watson was much better. He sings better than this one I think. Hayley just allways rocks.!

  • outstanding

  • Now that made my hairs stand up on end. Well done, this song is so cool. Im so happy.

  • Sublime rendition of the ever popular Maori love song.

  • omg this is so beautiful

  • albert hall????? whose concert was it?

  • It was at the classical brits in 2003
