@PlatonicSociety "Atheist: "Oh yeah, we all came from nothing! Who could argue that!" Christian: Obviously we came from a designer! This place is designed! Duh!"
Which atheist do you think claims we all came from nothing? Where do you get your misinformation?
@BostonCreationist Attempting to comfort people with lies is not only useless, it is destructive. Chaplains have crappy jobs, they should resign now. There is no point in defending your imaginary fiend or your repugnant immoral Holy Babble. Why do theists care so much about their pretend games & get so upset that some people cannot play their pretend games with them?
@BostonCreationist 1st of all, you evidently do not know what atheism is. To say it is a lie is saying everyone believes in god(s). Do you think you know everyone believes in god(s)??? Can you read everyone's minds??? Are you a god? Which atheist claims we came from nothing? It is theists who believe in nothing. It is theists who lie about life, the universe & everything. The point of being an atheist is that I do not believe in gods. There is absolutely no reason I should.
@PlatonicSociety I don't know exactly what you Googled. I just put in "are atheists more intelligent?" and got several pages of articles. The evidence definitely suggests atheists are more intelligent. Mind you, having spoken to many theists (of various types) I could have provided a fair bit of anecdotal evidence myself.. Regards the "we came from nothing statement", look up "singularity" - it might make more sense to you.
Even if there are no atheists in foxholes (a statement for which there is, of course, no supporting evidence at all) what is it supposed to prove? In extremis people act irrationally. A drowning man might call out for his mother even though she has been dead for many years. Someone hanging from the edge of a cliff will literally clutch at a straw if there is one available even though there is no possibility of it bearing their weight. Praying to god in a foxhole is equally futile.
@PlatonicSociety Unfortunately, for your case, the evidence doesn't support your position. Atheists consistently score higher than believers on intelligence tests. Don't take my word for it just Google it.
@PlatonicSociety Atheism isn't the belief that we came from nothing, we just don't believe in a supernatural being created us because of lack of evidence for one.
@allstrbasebal73 I don't even live in America so no, they're not putting there lives on the line for me. And second, I wish they where fighting against terrorism, too bad they receive orders from a corrupt government with a soul interest in oil and money.
There are no "sides" to this war. There is just the U.S. Army in some nation thousands of miles from the states who pose no legitimate threat to the United States. It's like picking sides in a fight between Mike Tyson and an Infant. You can side with the winner so he doesn't kick your ass, but you're still an asshole for doing so.
Of course, the fact that there are no atheists in fox holes is because the only people who we feel are worth risking lives of for oil are idiots who believe religion.
It must be only us Atheists in foxholes because any true Christian knows "Thou shalt not kill". Oh wait I forgot the Bible contradicts itself throughout & Christians are allowed to cherry-pick the parts that they want to follow & ignore the parts that they don't want to follow. Also if there are no Atheists in foxholes then it is correct to say that without religion there would be no wars, the quicker we all stop believing in outdated myths the quicker Humanity will progress out of the Dark ages
Well you see you have the Army in whih religion means something, & then you have the Marines. Religion means shit, your brothers in arms & that is all that matters.
The military is probably the biggest source of hatred, bigotry, and intolerance in American culture. And its all in the name of the Christian god supposed preacher of love, understanding, and tolerance. How is that for some contradictory shit!
BULL FUCKING SHIT YOU STUPID FUCK HOW BOUT THE FUCKING TILMAN BROTHERS HUH HOW BOUT THEM NO ATHEISTS IN FOXHOLES I KNOW PLENTY GOD DAMMIT I HOPE YOU READ THIS YOU FUCKING PRICK
Hitchens would have something to say about this whole "No atheists in foxholes thing", having faced death and embraced it whilst remaining atheist. The people behind this man are barely 20, they are still children with their whole lives ahead of them, of course they don't want to die, but using that fact to sell religion is a contemptable act. Promising them "divine protection" while other soldiers, even atheistic ones, are forced to give the ultimate sacrifice in silence. Shameful.
Maybe it is true. They said the same thing during the blitz in London. We're only human. Everybody prays don't you worry about that, according to some.
@Strangerinasland I agree to some extent, its a social disorder. People don't put much thought into which football team they support, they just fall into it. Much the same with religion.
I spent 7 years in the US Army infantry as an atheist. In the units that I served in, I will tell you that I saw VERY little religious fervor and the few times that it did show itself a huge number of my fellow soldiers had no interest in taking part. There were some to be sure, but it was a sharp minority that took part.
im athiest, im also a us army infantryman who got back from afghanistan last june, i have been shot at, i have even had RPG's fired at my position, now my main thing is why would a christian hide in a foxhole if "god" is protecting him?
I'm in the Army and an Atheist.......... so does that mean I must be a "closet Christian"? That Chaplain is an embarrassment to the Marine Corps, the US military, and the US as a nation.
Socioologist Phil Zuckerman says that: Compared to religious people, "atheists and secular people" are less nationalistic, prejudiced, antisemitic, racist, dogmatic, ethnocentric, close-minded, and authoritarian; that sounds pretty damn good to me
I hope one day to become an atheist chaplain in the army. To make sure that everyone remembers that there's no life after death, no warm fluffy clouds, and no benevolent father-figure watching your struggles. Just a long, cold nothing. And that oblivion? That's what makes life precious-- that it is finite, not just a bloody entrance exam into some snooty club. This is it, I'd tell them. Enjoy it.
Oh, and I'd remind them that kevlar does a better job of protecting you than faith. Substantially.
I was just diagnosed with my second kind of cancer in the last 3 years all before the age of 26 and guess what? I'm still a non believer. Maybe I've never been in a war, but I have faced some adversity in my life and I"m still and atheist.
The reason their are no Atheist sitting down in the Fox holes praying to a Make Believe God is because the Atheists are to bizzy fighting against the Middle Eastern Abrahamic Franchise that wants to overthrow our Proud Seculer Government with Religious Theocracy
@ThePenguinColonel Well Penguin, I am from the very DEEP South. I have a thick southern accent. I am an active duty Airman in the United States Air Force, and I am an open Atheist. I do not think you have any reason to make a comment like the one you posted. You are truly ignorant and close minded.
If the world was to wiped of memory. Everything we've ever known, we would eventually discover the same things we know about the universe again. The truth is the truth, and it will never change. But if religious knowledge was also wiped out, we would make up entirely new things from our imaginations.
You gotta love Heraldo. I mean this guy has managed to maintain a career with no brains what-so-ever. Lol......I can still picture the bludgeoned nose dripping Christs or Gods favorite color, bloody Mary. He never learns does he?
The guys with the biggest balls in the war are the Atheists because they know that nothing is going to happen after death. Christians have the fluffy pillow that is called Heaven to help them sleep at night.
I am equally or more moral. At the very least morality has more meaning when not motivated by fear. Whether I have more or less pride tends to change with the wind, as I've not settled into a solid philosophy yet. The same is more or less true for responsibility.
On days when complete secular atheism seems convincing, being human sucks ass. It's much better when you think you're divine and every human virture is supernatural objective good.
Its certainly easier to think its all a asupernatural good, but don't underestimate our own place in the universe.
Look for Neil Degrasse Tyson talking about our being the stuff of the stars. Every atom that makes up our body had to be formed by fussion in the heart of stars before it could be part of us
A being that is so powerfull it can make a universe in the blink of an eye it makes everything else seem fairly insgnificant.
When I think of the atoms and molecules all interacting to create photosynthesis in a single blade of grass, or that the elements in our bodies are billions of years old and will continue in new forms afer we are done with them.
That happening within the realm of natural law is aweinspiring to me
I get sick of hearing that old chestnut about how there are "no atheists in foxholes".
There may well be some who grasp at the straws of belief in a stressful situations, but it's been well documented in wars including both world wars that many soldiers, who were exposed to the horrors of war, actually lost their faith in any god and became atheists.
Even atheists will say "Oh my god." of "Jesus christ" when startled or horiffied by something, but it's just that, a saying. It means nothing.
It's amusing, if you don't find it sickening, that they think fear causing a person to become christian is evidence for christianity. When we cower in misesrable fear we are at our worst. We loose rationality and strength. If this causes a man to betray his principles and make a desperate mad grab for immortality then it is merely a tragic human failure, rather than a supernatural experiance.
So no atheist in a foxhole well then while all the dumb fuch christians that are praying they're going to get shot while I shoot back and not waste my time on some false hope in a firefight
Of course there are Atheists in foxholes, they're the ones firing their weapons instead of praying. the whole thing comes down to the original assertion, which is that abject fear is the cause of Christianity. Sorry, no that's only true of the ignorant weakminded idiots. Geraldo is a jackass and always has been.
I don't know about the other branches of service, but in the United States Air Force, all of the chaplains have armed body guards while they're "on" the field. Why in the world do they need human body guards if they have their omnipotent god supposedly protecting them?
You'll find atheists fighting on the front line, but not chaplains. He should know better than to open his mouth. He deserves no respect, and I'll spit on his boots if I ever meet him. Sorry mother fucker.
Im currently in Afghanistan and I'm an atheist as well. Not in a "foxhole" but I'm serving in the U.S. military. This was just an effort by Faux News to degrade Atheists and call them "non-patriotic". I am not for the war effort, nor am I a nationalist. The human species is truly one family, coexisting on one planet. Our fragmented perceptions of reality are a real problem here on this planet.
Religious people love feeling vindicated by statements like this. they think that because people take Pasquales wager, their imaginary friend must be real.
SGT Rainey, definitely an atheist in the foxhole, and have plenty of buddies i am surrounded by that are atheists in foxholes too. i think it just frightens fox news that america just might be defended by atheists too! grow up fox.
I'm an atheist, and I suspect the point of this video may be getting missed. I think the phrase 'no atheists in foxholes' refers to a psychological tendancy to pray when in a sticky situation, whether or not one believes the God exists. Just as theist looking forward to heaven is still scared when diagnosed with a terminal illness, the atheist in a dangerous spot may mutter prayer under our breath (at least I do) I think this is what the video refers to.
I don't. Why would I? I've been under fire and all I have done is keep a clear head. Instead of prayer i do an ammo check!
I wouldn't do a prayer because there is nothing to pray to. It's pointless, maybe you do kinda believe in something, you just haven't found out what yet.
@BrendanOnTheMoor Even if that were all that was meant by the phrase, it is still extraordinarily condescending to suggest that when faced with a bad situation, a person (in this case, a soldier) would abandon his or her secular convictions and principles and plead for help from something that this person has absolutely no reason to believe exists.
There is also the suggestion that, when faced with death, an atheist will finally accept the "truth" and realize how wrong he/she has been.
@BrendanOnTheMoor That's the problem though, it assumes that one can't have enough courage to serve without a belief in God. This spits in the faces of the many Atheists that died and served in the military by suggesting to do what they did that the "must" even if only for a moment, have had to draw strength from an imaginary friend. It's absurd, rude, and if it had been said about ANY other group would have been chastised but because we're are such a minority it's "ok" to be bigots towards us.
@TheSturdyWall I think they should just have counselors. No need for chaplains. There's churches everywhere if they want to talk to another "holy person"
Does Fox also have a problem with an Atheist leader sending troops to fight side by side the USA troops?
Of course speak about the leader of Australia, An atheist. If the leader of one of the countries sending troops to fight side by side with USA troops you can bet there are a few Atheists also deployed.
@EdBoonSucks lol ... classic xD !!! well put , my mate come out with this shit yesterday , and i said to him , kinda contradictory as the bible says do not kill !!!
this is the single most fucked up thing religious people get away with in this country. To not acknowledge the existence of atheist soldiers is fucking despicable. If there was a satanist in a foxhole i would still thank him for protecting our country, FUCK YOU faux news.
@Nogoals92 yea def, my mate said this to me yesterday and another time, and it makes me sick, plus he tried to tell me that, he wouldnt listen to any polls to say that Christianity was on the decline, or on how many atheists were in the army, cus he`s says that the government tweaks them to convince us that atheism is on the rise, cus he believes that the illuminati want us to be atheists, to create chaos i think .. he`s driving me mad !! plus he says evolution is a hoax !!
@Nogoals92 President Bush said atheists are not Americans. We are 'one nation under God.' We are a Christian nation. Atheists, please leave the US and don't come back.
@Nogoals92 I almost liked your comment until I read the last sentence. Seriously, take the "faux" part out and it makes sense. "FUCK YOU news." Because dumbfuckery is not exclusive to Fox.
@Tr33M4st3rI also almost liked his comment until he said: "i would still thank him for protecting our country"... Come on, nobody is attacking your country, usa it is attacking countries and killing innocent people!!
when has USA ever targetted civilians? we all know that the u.s. government is corrupt and lies to it's people, but painting America as unprovoked murderers is going way too far.

@Strangerinasland You don't have to like it, it is just the way it is in any war or other life/death struggle. Anyone who doesn't help, does not deserve any help.
@l337pwnage That may be the way it is for you. Someone must make a great effort to convince me they do not deserve help. You do not have to like that.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@Strangerinasland That is the way it is for society in general. When you need help, and they offer no assistance (that is what "neutral" people do), you are much less likely to help them except maybe for a very short term emergency.
Yes, their are rare cases of truly altruistic people who will sacrifice themselves for random people for no reason at all, but those people don't live very long and often don't have kids because they are also aware of how selfish having kids is.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@Strangerinasland well, that is just a retarded statement. You clearly don't understand why my statement is true. I'm not afraid to stand by people, therefore I pick a side. Anyone who doesn't is just an opportunistic coward like yourself who relies on the charity of others to survive but offers no loyalty or help in return for it.
@l337pwnage You listen here, you arrogant ignorant punk, I am not a coward & I gave no indication of it. I gave no indication I do not choose sides, I am not loyal or that I rely on anyone for anything. You have more assinine assumptions to make yourself seem like even more of a fool? You clearly do not understand why you are full of crap. I have saved lives in situations which would have you crying for your mommie. I happen to be more compassionate & tolerant than you & I am not the only 1.
@hipyto Hey man I agree with you. It's one of my most unpopular opinions, but our soldiers are not protecting our freedoms right now. They're nation building somewhere else! Don't get me wrong because I love my soldiers, but they need to be HERE in MY COUNTRY defending ME. THAT'S what they are there for, and you know what? Looking at the numbers, that's what they'd rather be doing. It's the people in my federal government who don't know how to read the Constitution.
Don't worry, all of the sensible grunts see chaplains as a joke; waste of space, food, and water--he doesn't carry a gun and requires another guy just to guard him. He doesn't speak for them.
@galacticcommander President Bush said atheists are not Americans. We are 'one nation under God.' We are a Christian nation. Atheists, please leave the US and don't come back.
Except I am atheist was before I went to Iraq (two tours) still am an atheist and I have been shot at more then I care to remember and blown up a few times. So SUCK IT FOX and stop pretending Rivera we all know you like the pole.
"The United States is not a Christian nation any more than it is a Jewish or a Mohammedan (Muslim) nation." -- Treaty of Tripoli (1797), carried unanimously by the Senate and signed into law by John Adams
We are a secular nation, always have been. I fought to defend that, and I will fight again if need be to stop the currect attempts by fundamentalists to make our Democracy into a Theocracy.
actually thou shalt not kill was intended to mean that you shall kill no one in your own tribe (the israelites) everybody else was screwed or at least their virgin daughters were so i do believe that there are christians in fox holes its jus not a good thing
well now i don't know if you are bein sacrcastic about your apology? No but i knew what you meant i was just makin a point i didnt mean to make it seem like i didnt understand what you meant i also apologize
No sarcasm, genuine appology....The internet allows open communication, but at the same time it lacks the sublties of Tone of Voice and Body language that make up so much of our communications as people.
Atheism is the default position. We were born atheists, and should continue to be that way until we find evidence to the contrary.

Do you feel better about simply being human?
whiteowl1415 3 months ago
@whiteowl1415
It's much better when you think you're divine and every human virture is supernatural objective good.
waldoman7 3 months ago
@waldoman7
Its certainly easier to think its all a asupernatural good, but don't underestimate our own place in the universe.
Look for Neil Degrasse Tyson talking about our being the stuff of the stars. Every atom that makes up our body had to be formed by fussion in the heart of stars before it could be part of us
whiteowl1415 3 months ago
@whiteowl1415
after gods and devils and eternal souls, stars and fussion aren't very impressive.
waldoman7 3 months ago
@waldoman7
I disagee, personaly.

Genechanger 3 months ago 5
@Genechanger
It's amusing, if you don't find it sickening, that they think fear causing a person to become christian is evidence for christianity. When we cower in misesrable fear we are at our worst. We loose rationality and strength. If this causes a man to betray his principles and make a desperate mad grab for immortality then it is merely a tragic human failure, rather than a supernatural experiance.
waldoman7 3 months ago
@waldoman7 I couldn't have put it any better myself. Thank you. Do you mind if I use it?

duffy84 3 months ago 2
Of course there are Atheists in foxholes, they're the ones firing their weapons instead of praying. the whole thing comes down to the original assertion, which is that abject fear is the cause of Christianity. Sorry, no that's only true of the ignorant weakminded idiots. Geraldo is a jackass and always has been.

I don't know about the other branches of service, but in the United States Air Force, all of the chaplains have armed body guards while they're "on" the field. Why in the world do they need human body guards if they have their omnipotent god supposedly protecting them?

Im currently in Afghanistan and I'm an atheist as well. Not in a "foxhole" but I'm serving in the U.S. military. This was just an effort by Faux News to degrade Atheists and call them "non-patriotic". I am not for the war effort, nor am I a nationalist. The human species is truly one family, coexisting on one planet. Our fragmented perceptions of reality are a real problem here on this planet.

BrendanOnTheMoor 4 months ago
@BrendanOnTheMoor
I don't. Why would I? I've been under fire and all I have done is keep a clear head. Instead of prayer i do an ammo check!
I wouldn't do a prayer because there is nothing to pray to. It's pointless, maybe you do kinda believe in something, you just haven't found out what yet.
gargamel6699 4 months ago 2
@BrendanOnTheMoor Even if that were all that was meant by the phrase, it is still extraordinarily condescending to suggest that when faced with a bad situation, a person (in this case, a soldier) would abandon his or her secular convictions and principles and plead for help from something that this person has absolutely no reason to believe exists.
There is also the suggestion that, when faced with death, an atheist will finally accept the "truth" and realize how wrong he/she has been.
johnjsal 4 months ago 5
@BrendanOnTheMoor That's the problem though, it assumes that one can't have enough courage to serve without a belief in God. This spits in the faces of the many Atheists that died and served in the military by suggesting to do what they did that the "must" even if only for a moment, have had to draw strength from an imaginary friend. It's absurd, rude, and if it had been said about ANY other group would have been chastised but because we're are such a minority it's "ok" to be bigots towards us.

@Strangerinasland well, that is just a retarded statement. You clearly don't understand why my statement is true. I'm not afraid to stand by people, therefore I pick a side.
