  • Why isn't his name here? He's all fingers and techno, with no feeling or rhythm.

  • Who is this playing?

  • this dances with arms and stuff like 0:45 are completely unnecessary. Pianists who do that try to convey the idea that there's some kind of refined power in music flowing and SNOOOOORE >:/

  • Ahh. Listening to this reminds me of when i used to play this song when i was 11 in piano class.....(a beginner versions ofcourse!) *sigh*........good times.

  • What does that mean, "lack of spirit"? Does he have to burst in tears to show spirit? The same thing was said of Heifetz, utter nonsense.

  • mindblowing!

  • The only part I can play is... None. I'll never be as awesome as this.

  • Thumbs up if you lost your shit at 0:44!

  • i wish the name of the pianist was included in the title.now I have to trawl through...SEVEN pages of comments looking for it...!!!

  • I don't see why people have to complain about lack of 'spirit'. A piece is at its best when an artist plays it so we can hear the music, rather than disorienting the sound through an emotional interpretation

  • @giblspoink I suppose some people think music is somehow tied to the original author, and players have a responsibility to play exactly the way the author played it. But really then all you have is a bunch of monkeys, or parrots, mimicking. I think if it's at all possible, a player should own the piece they are playing. That way the piece is liberated, rather than bound by preconception.

  • @frankbraker You are absolutely rigth. That's why modern day musicians can't compare to the ones from the 50's or so...

  • Good God. I thought the other posters were just being snooty before I heard the performance, but they're right - this piece is technically flawless but utterly without spirit.

  • brilliant techique , no feeling , althought something sends a shiver down my spine , the crude reallity when someone can play a song in such a disgusting mechanical manner . sorry kid .

  • Brilliant technique without any comprehension. No understanding of the real macabre as conceived by Liszt and Horowitz. But the clearness is really jawdropping... as if he had really practised it as an étude.

The lyrical fragment at 3:33-4:04 is spoiled... there is no miracle at 5:05-5:15. Why does Sultanov’s version make me let out a tear whereas this one make me irritated? Because it is vicious practice—to gain perfection at the cost of the loss of complete understanding.

  • WHO IS THIS KID???

  • Didn't know Horowitz was Asian...

  • This is so wondefully insane! How many finger does he have?

  • Meh...

  • OPE! and there we go. Franz Liszt: mephisto waltz. is that a joke? on me? on you? i donno.

  • I came here for the Horowitz.....but...stayed for the asian with the good hand.

haha no i keeed i keeed. extra medication today (for it's the reason for the season.)

but anyways vladimir horowitz, isn't that the most russian-jewish name you've Ever heard?

hahah no. but i clicked randomly; when i saw the macabre. then the dance. then the piano. and i do love this death piano... death metal. death piano.

maybe i'll look for more vladowitz in the future... AND NOW to random Franz Liszt..

  • I came here for Horowitz.....but...not bad

  • this piece is nothing without the violin playing too

  • Perfection!

  • of course he's not Horowitz, i believe he's Tae-Hyung Kim. He is awesome. great performance

  • The only part I can play is the first 5 secondes...;)

  • Horowitz?Tae Hyung Kim... perhaps

  • what ever you can do, some asian kid can do better

  • @mdicecco302 hahahah that was epic ..

  • @mdicecco302 Except for sex lololol

  • Comment removed

  • @mdicecco302 and probably cheaper too! lol

  • @mdicecco302 Except for pronouncing the letter 'R'

  • @mdicecco302 but can they COMPOSE it???? i'm still waiting for an Asian Beethoven, or even a lesser one than that....i'm not going to hold my breath.

  • @mdicecco302 u mad bro?

  • @mdicecco302 unless you are in fact asian yourself.

  • best performance Ive heard on youtube, excellent!

  • 7:07 à 7:15 il va plus vite que la musique ;)

  • If thats Horovitz then I'm Abraham Lincoln,

  • @newgeorge It's not Horowitz, it's Horowitz's arrangement of Danse Macabre though.

  • @burningled ok I understand now :)

  • @newgeorge Well actually it's the Horowitz-Liszt arrangement, but it's Horowitz's arrangement of Liszt's arrangement of the original composition by Saint-Saëns. You get the idea.

  • damnnn this is the best version i ve listened :O

  • How old is Horowitz here????

  • @mandraque2233 I hope it's a joke right? :p

  • The problem isn't with the speakers - mine are fine actually, as I am listening to this via my connected Sony Home Theater system. The problem is with the interpretation of the piece. This is the stiffest performance of this piece I've ever heard. It might as well be a cheap dime-store player piano for all I care. Blah!

  • A reminder to those who belly-ached about the piano. We're listening to a PAPER DIAPHRAM, people, NOT a piano. The video quality is poor, and we make allowances for that. Why should you think the speakers in your computer, and the electronics which run them, are doing any better job as a stand-in for a grand piano?

  • Genius!

  • Hmm, this sounds more like Horowitz's version, not Liszt's one. Anyway, great playing :)

  • O.O fantastic!!!

  • Hey he has Lang Lang matched or went beyond him without a doubt..

  • franz liszt fue el mejor pianista de todos los tiempos increible lo que se puede hacer con el piano y el lo recorria de punta a punta a increible velocidad este pianista lo describe tal cual tocaria liszt en su epoca pienso yo un genio

  • Liszt was a genius!!!! Imagine how he must have performed this!!!!

Outstanding performance in my opinion by Tae Hyung Kim. Some would say it should be played slower, but Liszt was a rule breaker, so I think he would be fine with it.

Were there only ten people in the audience? I can't believe the pitiful applause this incredible performance received.

  • this is not liszt´s danse macabre, it is saint saens, the original version is for violin and orchestra, liszt has just transcribed for piano solo

  • @lingk100

    asi es!!

  • @lingk100 Right, but the title clarifies it better for people who wanted to hear the piano arrangement by Liszt, not the original orchestration by Saint-Saëns.

  • 2:41 blows my goddamn mind.

  • Lang Lang playing?

  • Why is Liszt's name printed here as "Franz von Liszt"? "von" would have indicated nobility under rule of monarchy, which Liszt was not.

  • Forget about the piano, he's awesome!

  • PLAYED WELL BUT WITHOUT EMOTION TO ROBOTIC

  • @duku345 How do you mean 'without emotion'? Do you mean no facial expression or what? Because I don't really understand what you're meaning...

  • @duku345 WHAT!?

  • @Offshoreorganbuilder haha, i second that

  • @duku345 The only reason it seems robotic to you was because he interpreted it differently.

  • Does anyone know the difference between the transcription of liszt and horowitz? :O is it the same?

  • What's all this about the piano? I mean, I've played on Steinway's that sound like shit, and Yamahas that sound awesome. It's no C. Bechstein from 1926 with real ivory keys, but this is one hell of a piano anyway. Yamahas tend to have a slightly brighter sound than for example a Kawai or Steinway, but I like that.

  • such a weak applause for such a great performance

  • So fucking amazing.

  • It's funny to see people saying the piano is horrible, and things like that. But i can bet most of you guys don't have a fuckin' cent to get even close to one of these.

  • @wmguitarjam How do you mean, the fact that I can't afford a Hummer, doesn't mean I can't say I don't like the car :p But I agree with you, people shouldn't focus on the piano, but on the pianist :p

  • caraca!!!!!!!!!!!

  • No doubt, great pianist. piano qualiy...difficult to judge.

Personally I prefer the original Horowitz rec of 1942 which approaches more sophisticated imho. e.g.: 4:42 this passage shows the technical border of this pianist, he slows down when Horowitz (also Volodos) keep holding tempo. I'm not against rubato, but in this single case it's not appropriate. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to minimize his interpret. but doesn't proof ambivalent critcs admiration because of more interest?

  • YAMAH piano is horrible......

  • @lovingallison not horrible, but definetly meh

  • nice playing, bad piano

  • @theromanpraetorian I don't think it's the piano which is bad, but more the recording. It's always hard to tell in these video's

  • And this version is Horowitz's one not Liszt. (Liszt arranged Saint Saens's work and after then Horowitz re-arranged Liszt's one)

  • @dgcoocoo yes, mores the pity. why the hell didn't Horovitz leave his clunking hands off it. Liszt knew what he was doing.

  • He is Tae Hyung Kim from South Korea. In 2008, he played this and passed the preliminary of the Seoul National Music Competition. He won a prize in the competition at the age of 24.

  • !!!!!!!!cool

  • this is awesome

    who is he

  • WOW! Great performance. This video has inspired me to try to learn this!

  • What's the name of this pianist?

    Where did he play?

    And when?

    :o

  • Liszt is a real genious, this pianist is an awesome performer with much technique!

To my mind, it's a really great performance. I like this tempo.

  • he's playing it allgerettissimo...it has to be much slower

  • The sound quality is not good. :-( But great performance, though. ;-) Who is this?
