This wasn't picked up because it was TOO good. It would have made all of Sic-Fi's other shows pale by comparison. The public has been brainwashed on easy-to-churn-out quantity. Quality either confuses them or makes them demand more of it. If Sci-Fi has only one show that is quality then the public will want to know why all the others aren't as well. The execs would then have to spend more money to raise the other shows up to the same level of excellence as Screw-On Head.

Actually, I have another idea... or maybe it's more like a request .... screw those tv people, who needs tv ... I haven't watched tv since I got my own laptop 5 years ago. Do the cartoon and publish it on the internet.... if television doesn't want it, you make your own talevision. I'm sure a lot of people will watch it and you can expand: get more cartoonist to participate, do more shows untill you have enough support to make a legal paid broadcasting network (an intertantional one plx).

This pilot really only had two strikes against it.

- It was too much like another goofball superhero show, The Tick. (It was funny *ONCE*, gentlemen)

- The only women in this series were villains. I'm not a fan of 'political correctness' but, come on...'WomYn r da 3Vi|, Hurr' doesn't cut it after shows like Kim Possible and Daria have been broadcast.

And, let's face it, do we really want animation's reputation to sink any lower after Family Guy has pissed all over it?

Point 1: Similar, yes. But entirely different feel. The Tick was a sadonic take on the superhero, this is more like a Lovcraftian tale where the hero happens to win.

Point 2: Man oh man and I sick of this idiotic "gender line". Firstly, there is NO statement being made about the inherrent nature of gender, it merely doesn't have a female protagonist, which reflects NOTHING. And for good measure, until turned into a vampire, Constance WAS a good character.

It's really a shame that they chose not to air this. It's a really fabulous example of the genius of Mike Mignola,and the animators,writers,dirrectors,a­nd voice actors who worked with him. The animation is spot-on to the books,and the voices are genius! Plus,can you imagine all the time and work put into this? An incredible shame. :(

Whether or not Mignola would have continued this for Syfy or whether it was simply Syfy not picking up the series after the pilot [a loss either way; it's fantastic], my main reaction at the end of the day is: "Damn. Why couldn't they make the animated 'Hellboy' look like this?"

I think partially the prob was that even in the commentary, Mike Mignola himself didn't really seem interested in continuing the series comic-book wise (paraphrasing, but basically he said he used up all the jokes and gags he wanted in that one story, and prolly didn't have much more material ahead).

So possibly, sci-fi channel was concerned that outside of this pilot episode as an adaptation of that one comic book, how would the story play out if Mike wouldn't write it?
