Just saw Funny Girl on TCM for first time in 30 years. I was surprised how little singing there was and how boring it was. Most of Fanny's songs except for this one were just tossed over especially "My Man". Better sound of course now and Barbra is great but I prefer the real Fanny Brice renditions!
Why would anyone think of comparing VERY different talents from VERY different eras, playing to VERY different audiences???
If you like something, that's GREAT -- different performances grab different people for a million different reasons -- and some happen to be more popular than others. And even THAT doesn't mean one is better than another.
Dont think it is correct to say Barbar better than Fanny or vice versa they are performers from different eras and styles, technology and much more is different, they are both great so enjoy them both... no need to polarise views
Well, I can see why they got Barbra Streisand to play her, they both have the same profile. I love this song and had no idea that it was sang in 1929. Thanks for posting this, I really enjoyed it.
Nice video. You have great images that are hard to find; good transitions, and you have the music quality as good as possible for a YouTube video. Nice job!
Wow, I can't believe it, but I've never heard Fanny Brice before now! I just knew the character from Funny Girl. She sounds great, and she looks pretty good, too. Thanks for expanding my knowledge of the character from the movie. I don't want to get into a "tit for tat" battle about Fanny and Barbra, but I'd say Barbra did just swell in her vocals of Fanny.
fanny sold a song as well as barbra even if she didn't have her range. she had something barbra never has had- pathos. (as did garland) just listen to her sing "My Man".
Great posting. Didn't realize she sang that well. There was a great movie about the life of the composer of this song Fred Fisher. It was produced by Georgie Jessel and was called Oh, You Beautiful Doll.
Well, Bilkie, ofcourse, is a completely different cup of tea. Fanny was rather a vadeuville star, although some of her performanceas are the pure and high class torch singing.
Thanks Corrie! I was surprised when I checked noone yet posted that great hit of hers in YT. I like her, and Ruth Etting and Belle Baker: the Tree Greats of the turn of 1920/30s
Hi B., she was really good. She is considered a kind of a "vadeuville comedienne" but she was also excellent in torch singing - which I much much prefer to her comedy numbers.
Brice was BRILLIANT!

Barbra Streisand looks a lot like Fanny Brice.

Streisand was very happy when this song was interpolated into the film version of "Funny Girl."

She has a great voice and you can even sense her charisma on stage by her singing! I live Fanny Brice!

she is a good singer but the range and power go to streisand.i suspect the time and style of the era had a litlle to do with it.

Thanks for posting this! I'm singing this song for a Vaudeville revival show in April and I really needed the original as a reference. :)

Fanny was an oxymoron. A comic who was also a torch singer.
I'm so old I remember listening to her on the radio when I was a kid.

Grzegorz My Darling,
Who could be BLUE listening to this FABULOUS artist! She was SPECTACULAR! Love the photo at 1:46 with the Rope Tassel look on her arm.
I think on our next excursion to Paris, I shall copy it!
If Serge starts up again, I can always use the the tassle to whip him! :-) Why do we put up with HIM?
One more thing Fanny was VERY ATTRACTIVE!
Merci Mon Cher.

Genia, I'm not sure it's a good idea about whipping Serge. In last three weeks here, he and Rudy whip one another almost every morning

@genia106 this was when she was young she was pretty attractive but when she grew up she wasnt that pretty anymore
