Even though the three protagonists were labelled Good, Bad and Ugly, they all exhibited elements of those qualities, i.e. as most people do. For example, even though Blondie is labelled "good", isn't he also "bad" and sometimes "ugly? He was making his living by turning in and then helping to escape a wanted criminal - isn't that "bad"? And then, at times, he kills with no hesitation or consideration - surely "ugly". The same can be seen in Angel Eyes and Tuco.
Definitely stick with the 161 min US cut of GBU. It was Leone's approved version and the pacing is superb. The MGM special edition is an absolute hack job. (especially the remixed 5.1!)
And Once Upon a Time...The Revolution (Fistful of Dynamite) is a masterpiece. Just as good if not better than OUATITW.
Tha whole 'The man with no name’-hook was made up to release the movies as a trilogy in the USA. The Ugly in Italian actually does not literally mean ugly; it is about ugly in character.
Fistful of Dynamite is one of the most underrated movies in movie history. It is not as good as the 2 movies Leone made before it, better than the his first 2 westerns. I showed it on 35 mm two years ago in it’s uncut version and it is a masterpiece. Bogdonovich was only on it for a few seconds; actually Leone wanted Peckinpah to direct it.
Leone wanted Bronson, Fonda, James Coburn and then Richard Harrison who just did a western in Italy and didn’t feel like doing one more. He told Leone he knew an actor that could sit on a horse, unlike most American actors. That actor was Clint.I don’t buy that prequel story. Eastwood does not play the same character in all three movies; it is not a trilogy in that sense.
Great show, but I would agree with the comment by Bawdy Bijinder below that you're covering too many well know films recently, although your'e still making interesting points and coming up with some great trivia. I agree with Mike that the first film is slow going a lot of the time. Amazing to think that Morricone never won an Oscar (he won a career recognition Oscar but not for an actual single score). Didn't realise Leone had directed so few films.
Guys, your show is FAB! But, I would like to suggest; in some future episode, if you could please discuss more films that perhaps not so many people have seen, the past few conversations have mainly focused on very popular genre flicks… I think it’s awesome when you talked about more hidden gems… “Colossus: The Forbin Project” comes to mind… anyway, I guess I’m just another a-hole with an opinion, but there you have it, thanks for any consideration.
Great episode. Yeah, it grossed me out when I saw Metallica walk out to Ennio Morricone. I think The Mars Volta used the same or a similar song which is more fitting. Damn, I like a Fistful of Dynamite.
To complete the west doing the east / east doing the west circle, you should say a word or two (good or bad) about the spaghetti western/samuari mutant Sukiyaki Western Django (2007).
Brilliant show as always guys, fucking hilarious with Gloria at the start. I'm going to do a video response so I'll leave my opinions until then, but as much as I LOVE these films, I still feel like High Noon is the greatest Western ever made.
I've been looking foward to you guys doing Westerns and I'm glad you started with The Man With No Name Trilogy, great movies. The only one I havent seen yet is Few Dollars More, its the only one of the 3 I dont have on DVD yet. Freaking love Good, Bad and the Ugly. Awesome movie. Another great show you guys, can't wait for Part 2!
I only watch Westerns with Will Smith in them, he's our modern day Clint Eastwood. You all know the classics Smith has brought us, we are all lucky we've been able to see them. The government may increase taxes, ship jobs overseas, but at least we still have Academy Award Nominee, was he?, Mr. Smith to make our lives so rich. Bless you, and his children, I usually hate remakes but the Karate Smith with Jackson Chan was lovely and amazing.

I always look forward to a new episode and this was a great one. I love Leone and Good, Bad and the Ugly is my quite possibly my favorite film of all time. I'm also in complete agreement with you on Yojimbo being superior to A Fistful of Dollars. Also, this is the best edited episode so far. Keep up the good work!

Great show as always. Firstly, whatever weight Jeff lost, Mike seems to have taken. What gives, Mikey? "Once upon a Time" doesn't come CLOSE to "Good, bad, Ugly". Fonda and Bronson were BORING compared to Clint'n'Cleef, and story laaaagged. "G,B,U" best western all time and top10 best MOVIE of all time, fuhgeddabowdit.
And I've come to realize that Tarantino doesn't "pay tribute" or "pay hommage" as much as he RIPS OFF anymore since he hasn't had an original idea in more than a decade.
Loved the episode and pretty much agree with everything you guys said. Is the second episode gonna focus on John Ford and Howard Hawks at all, I can't imagine you guys doing a Western episode and not mentioning either of them. Or Mann and Boetticher, too.
Glad to see the Cinefiles having this particular discussion. Agreed with most of the factual details and analysis, particularly the general feeling that each instalment of the trilogy was an improvement in some aspect on the previous. Eric provided the most interesting analysis, especially his point about the use of "good", "bad" and "ugly". Once Upon a Time in the West has to be Leone's Western cinematic masterpiece!
@jimreid5 I guess, but I'm still sad, but not as much, I'm like 55 % happier now than when I wrote the first comment, if you're interested, which you're not, ok? Bye!
Thanks for another great show. These films certainly deserve their place as some of the best westerns ever made, Morricone scores are incredible. Looking forward to your recommendations in part 2.
I always wonder what Clint Eastwood character did to all his $ tha he would wind up getting in all three of the films? Since there are a trilogy and conected regarless if the third one is consider a prequel or not. He had enought money that should it last a while and lest not forget that he was willing to die for it. Do you think that maybe Sergio Leone was trying to say something about americans not using or saving their $ wisely. This films are a vision of what he thought the west was.
Very good episode. What I particularly liked about it is that you all seemed interested in the topic. The episodes that one or two of you don't seemed interested in, even though I may like the topic, are not as good. When you guys are talking and forgetting the camera is rolling, those are the episodes I like. No matter what the topic is.

Never really kept track of the comments on your videos so I don't know if its been suggested before but maybe you could do a show on guilty pleasures? Movies you know you shouldn't like but you just keep on coming back to?
this is better then that Back to the future shit, but I think you should make more videos about great directors like Kurasawa, Leone, or Kubrick , Im agree with the guy who said that Leones movies are like painting , they are so beutiful and epic, for me when I try to compare once upon the time in the west and the good , the bad and the ugly, is like comparing Goodfellas with the Godfather to mob films
interesting point about "once upon a time in the west" the three gunmen in the opening sequence leone originally wanted eastwood, van cleef and wallach as a way to metaphorically kill off his westerin because his dream project was "once upon a time in america"

Leone directed 'Il colosso di Rodi' - his first full credit as director. C'mon, guys - a bit of research wouldn't go astray!
Thus, Leone directed 7 films in total (where he receives full credit as director), and 5 of those can be deemed 'Westerns'. C'mon, Edwin!
