  • how does it feel in comparison with Viscount db 5? Does it have more possibilities or less tonal options?

  • Hi Ingolf

Both the Nord C1/C2 and the Viscount/Oberheim DB5 are aiming for 100% B-3 tonal options, so my guess is that it's a draw between them regarding functions, in the 'B-3 department'.

Which one sound closest to the real deal, the B-3. I don't know, as I havn't tried the DB5 out.

The C1 have a Farfisa and a Vox also, to that the C2 also adds a sampled baroque to the organ mix.

Please, write me a line if you compare them in real life :-)

  • That's some sweet stuff dude. I've been practicing lately trying to bring my skill level up. Any tips on developing R/L independence? I can pick up some good tips from watching your right hand anyway. Thanks for the vids, great stuff!

  • Thanks jasongogal!

I have sent you a loooong message about R/L independence and how to develop independent left hand walking bass lines. Check out your YouTube message inbox, please.

    But the bottom line is:

    **********

The left hand is The Boss in jazz organ

    **********

Never play more on top than the left hand will let you. Even if it means playing only one note with the right hand.

  • at 1:18, is that the famous Hammond pop? Excellent playing btw.

  • Hi someguy

    Thanks!

    Yes, that's the 'pop'!

The non-tonal keyboard 'thump' on the lower manual, played with the fingertips, the palm or the knuckles, added as a rhythmic device. I use them almost without thinking about them now, also when improvising. They have become ingrained.

  • @rounder2u Thanks for the info, I'm new to the jazz organ and have been researching and listening to a lot of it lately.

  • Hi someguy

I'm not a Joey DeFrancesco pro, just a mere mortal, but I will try to answer further questions you might have (tips about players, 'revealing' records, how to get the left/right hand independence, etc).

  • I also like the ostianto at 1:26

  • Hi cky12qxz

You mean the two-note tremolo, with the thumb at the sixth (G) and the ring finger at the sharp nine (D#). This two-note tremolo is quite often used by jazz organists. Listen to a number of jazz organ blues songs or funk organ songs and you will hear this now and then. It sound best, I belive, with the sixth and sharp ninth, but sixth and the root will also sound good (that would have been G and C if I had used it for this song).

  • Oh, for I am a young man.

I don't really know that much stuff. I know vamping, crotchets, ostianto, chords MAINLY I KNOW BASIC STUFF.

  • Wouldn't the sixth be an A?

  • Falcusaronius, you're absolutely right!

    Thanks for spotting my error.

(I'm doing a facepalm of the highest order right now)

The text should be "thumb at the fifth (G)"

  • Ayy Rounder, how did you get the camera to get that angle?

  • Hi cky12qxz

I bought a wall mounted arm, that was supposed to be used with a CCTV. The part that screws into the camera was of standard size so it worked out well with my camcorder.

  • LOOLOLO A cctv arm? haha cool.

  • You got an "a+"

  • Hi Dimagg

    Thanks!

  • Wow, wow, wow. Great!!! Great song and great playin'

  • Thanks lillshogun!

  • Thanks gnasher!

More originals - you're tough with me :-) Well, time will tell. It's not only me, you see: It wasn't me who picked this song. Quite the opposite. When I heard it - it felt like Orange Peel picked me! I just had to try my grubby hands on that funky bass line and the theme. It mesmerized me. I had no choice :-) So, time will tell what's next.

PS. You will have great fun with a C1 :-)

    Keep swinging,

  • This is very cool. You played very well. I love the sound of your instrument. I have a question about it. Does it have pedals? It seems that you are getting all of your bass lines from your left hand on the lower manual. Do you ever play foot pedals? Anyway, I really enjoy your videos and I hope you will keep them coming. Thanks so much.

  • Hi kdkmo

    Thanks!

True, I play those basslines with my left hand and I'm not using foot pedals at all.

The C1 does not come with a pedalboard (but it will accept any MIDI foot pedalboard). Just a few days ago though I learned that Clavia will release a foot pedal board 'Pedal Keys 27' in a couple of months. I will not be surprised if I find out that I have to get me one of those :-) Then I will have even more problems at the organ! :-)

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder
