This gave me a great idea for a 'sensory tub' activity for my work (with toddlers). The lights are dimmed from 12-2:45 in the afternoon for nap and I think I'm going to give them flash lights to light up the marbles. I'm so excited, I can't wait. I'll just have to be extra vigilant, because I know there will be little ones who want to put them in their mouths. Thanks for the inspiration!

If you search for "Water Optical Fiber_Maryland Day 2010.MOV" on youtube you'll get a cool demonstration video about the Total Internal Reflection phenomena that makes the marbles light up the way they do :)

The reason for the neat lighting is due to a combination of prism effects and a phenomena called Total Internal Reflection. The light can enter at any angle, but once it enters the marble it bends due to the marble's increased density. Then, depending on the angle at which it's moving, it in essence gets trapped in the marble because it can only escape if it's angle is almost straight on (T.I.R. traps it) So, it can enter at any angle, but only escape from certain points (The center and sides.)
