Why are their no shock diamonds in the afterburner? I think the effect is cosmetic and a great deal of the fuel is being wasted due to design. A proper afterburner would have annular injection rings & the design of the combustion chamber would prevent the rpm drop. You notice how real jets adjust the nozzle for afterburner? The pressure change affects the flame-front and significantly changes the pressure wave thus creating the shock diamonds and more thrust.
that was awsome, and how were you able to do that? never saw that before and how do you keep it from melting? cause watching the video it started to turn red for a minute I though it would melt. but great job and one more thing. what was the total to build it
Haha, my jj-1800 blew a turbine blade. Expecting it back from China in a few days, they were really helpful. The tailpipe on these things gives it a nice howl at full power.
Excuse the comparison, but that looks more like a flame thrower than an A/B to me. Isn't there a way to make more combustion happen within the A/B pipe such as a flame holder? And why does it pulse so much?
I have a 45lb thrust engine. Do you use an igniter for the AB fuel? What is your AB fuel? How many volts does that pump use? How did you mount it to your thrust nozzle? Do you know of a site I could get dimensions for an AB for my engine. Thanks
I think the best part was watching the fuel in that jug drain whenever the afterburner was lit, lol. Those things aren't exactly fuel-efficient like that eh?
if you want to get subsonic shock rings your going to have to speed up the exhost from the after burnner more pressure in the after burnner,by makeing a reducer to cap over the end with a hole 2 inches in dia thats tapered and rounded at the end Dave*
Great video! I am working on a project to place an afterburner on a similar engine. However, to maximize the thrust and to not just waste a bunch of the energy, I am designing a variable area nozzle for the afterburner. I am looking for possible materials for this and am wondering what the exit temperatures of the afterburners are? Also, how did you design your flame holders...just a V shaped bar across or something else? Finally, how did you prevent bubbles in the fuel lines going to the AB? :p
No, not really, note the fire extinguisher on the wall behind. To be honest, it's pretty safe as long as you keep your attention on it, don't be distracted.
The afterburner is custom built and is not included with the turbine engine. It's not going in a plane, it's now fitted to a 1/5th scale jet dragster!!
When I bought the engine I ordered a second exhaust-tailpipe to go with it, I still have the original one, the second one was used to help make the A/B system, it bolts on separately and is easily returned to a normal engine.
sweet! Was it just me, or did you light the burners at a low to mid rpm? It just never seemed like you went full throttle with it. Just curious, but what made the burner intermittent? I've always wanted to see rc jets with burner, but it looks like that will be in development for a bit longer. Keep it up!
You're quire right, the system does need some more development, it lights intermittently at higher rpms, but I believe the flame holder is letting it down some.
What you say is quite right, I did have the exit nozzle a fair bit smaller but had to open it up due to excessive temps, my flame holder isn't the most efficient either. It's the effect I'm after rather than outright thrust though. My new flame holder seems to be a little better but still not perfect.
It would appear that the AB nozzle is *way* too big so you're not getting much in the way of efficiency.
Nozzle down the AB and you'll significantly increase the velocity, and thus the thrust.
With a single-stage radial compressor you won't get any mach-diamonds but you'll get much better thrust levels with lower AB fuel consumption than you're currently seeing.
Far too much of your AB fuel is being burnt outside the engine (where it contributes nothing to the thrust).
I believe there is a production model in Europe somewhere, I think it's called "Skypipe". Yes, the fuel spray ring and flame holder took quite a while to get to a usable state, my first few attempts were dismal to say the least!! After doing the math properly it's pretty much a "no-brainer".
im sure if theres ever a production model the american ama will probably serverely restrict its use to only certain aereas but this may be good, because ive seen a few with way more money than flying skills,,,ps very cool i worked on the real ones, all it takes is a fuel spray ring and ignition and variable exhaust, and like the gentleman said good math and great mechanisal skills and dilligence
Thats impressionant. Two questions: How have you done the afterburner chamber, and how much thrust do you win whith this. A, I have seen the fuel level, and it drinks very good. Good work.
I made the Afterburner chamber myself using my own design, however, it's not too difficult, just a matter of doing the math correctly. The engine produces just under 20lbs of static thrust without the afterburner and ~26-27lbs with the afterburner, but she sure is thirsty!!
You can use just about anything that will burn, I have tried several different fuels, kerosene, Jet A-1, petrol, diesel etc.. I have found the petrol gives a better ignition but the Jet A1 gives a higher thrust output, only a small percentage between them though. The diesel gives off a lot of smoke which ads to the effect but it's also very smelly, dirty and oily. ;-)
That is one thirsty little turbine! : ) I was amused watching the fuel level drop. It would be real cool to see a RC jet shooting that flame. What do you plan to put it in?
Yes, she certainly does drink plenty!! And yes it would look pretty awesome in an RC aircraft, however, I don't think many local RC rules allow for such a thing. I have just this weekend fitted it into a 1/5 scale Jet Dragster that I have built, just have to do all the plumbing and electrics and give her a run, should be interesting indeed. I have some pics if you'd like to see them, just pm me and i'll organise to send them to you.
looks like my mates jet cat the other day :P the fuel pump ceased coz it was new and once we got it running we did a kero start. It was very wet and we got a nice big flame out the back of the hawk :P
Perhaps something stronger than a chipboard table is required here :-o Is the turbine rpm decreasing with every afterburner hit because it is robbing fuel from the CC.
You're quite right, I should beef it up a bit. It looks a little worse than it is because of the sudden hit of the afterburner.
Yes I do get a little rpm droop, about 3-5%, mainly due to the pressure differential between the CC and afterburner, if the afterburner is held on long enough the rpm does eventually recover as the FADEC will sense the rpm drop and supply more fuel in response, it goes the other way when the A/B is turned off. The A/B uses a separate fuel supply.
mount to sled with weight spring attatched so we can see Lbs of thrust.

I'm looking at a JJ-3000. How much work would be involved in setting up an afterburner for something like that?

nice work...
a flame holder is the key though.
Not too restrictive to give good output, but giving enough turbulance to hold a flame at high speed.

That afterburner is not effective. It's robbing your engine of power & rpm instead of increasing your power. Second a real ab works at full power.
basimpsn 3 years ago
looks more like it adds to the thrust than deducts from it, look at the table rock when the afterburner ignites.
