Sonic's design has a lot of influences from cartoon characters from the 1920's and 30's, his facial structure being one of them. It's much more prevalent in "Classic Sonic" (especially because he doesn't speak; cartoons were silent back then) but even the newer Sonic retains a lot of the traits.
I remember the song very well, but I also clearly recall the shifting amoeboid shapes around his head. I remember trying to keep track of how many of them there were, and when they repeated.
I also am glad, with all the other non-original versions of this song on YouTube, that this is the REAL one.
Incase you can't read roman numerals, it says copyright 1960. My dad was a huge fan of the show, but my heart will always belong to the 1920's shorts :)
this cat dude was from like the 1920s! shit or somethin, so fuck off mickey mouse, wayyyyyyyyy before ur time..........then u got heathcliff, garfield, and i dont know how many more, i dont even know why they made some cartoon characters like scooby dum, scooby dee, and shit, goober and the ghost chasers, im surprised scooby do didnt sue them, and clue club, too, lol, i remember devlin being pretty cool, of course all old school stuff is cool, today is for shit
I never particularly cared for this program and haven't seen this in years, but somehow I stil recall the theme. It's funny the things you remember...
I was seeing it around 1977-78. Probabaly on a B&W TV. It was usually shown as a replacement between two other series. A lot of sixties cartoons like King Kong and Milton the Monster would show up for about a week until the station got their regular series going. That might explain b&w episodes. The stations may have held on to one or two.
Also ... many cartoons were in color in the 40's and 50's (think Warner Brothers) but were shown in B&W on TV. While color TV was developed and demonstrated in the 1940's, it wasn't until the mid to late 1960's before color TV was affordable to the masses (I was a 9-year-old kid in 1969 when we got our first color TV).
@McJewBacon Felix was in color, but not until after a few seasons. Very early it was in B&W. I was surprised to see this intro version in color - I too remember it in B&W, but this TransLux intro endured for a long time.
@drbotanus It depended on your local station carrying "Felix" because station owners didn't have or refused to give money to upgrade current facilities to transmit programs to color. KBSC-TV Corona/Los Angeles (now KVEA) was one example. Many programs aired in B/W (although in color) until the station went to color full-time in 1973 or 1974.
@bossradio930 OMG! KBSC-TV Corona, I barely got this transmission on my TV when living in LA. KGJ-TV came in pretty good, which sometimes showed Felix, or was that KCOP-TV?
I had some old videos of the Trans Lux episodes and they were in color. Unless they were reissued or something, I always thought they were originally animated in color.
This was on in the morning when I was out in Los Angeles back in 1983. I just love the theme song. And besides, Felix the Cat is so cute.

@McJewBacon It was everybody's TV, until the Sixties, anyway. Before that, you only saw them in color in a theater.
