I live in the PNW, also. Had one of these beautiful birds treed in my front yard (in the city) by a furious murder (appropriate) of crows one Sunday - all day from morning till dusk. He was gorgeous. All the neighbors hung out of my second story window to get a good look at him. Huge velvety eyes. At that time it was unusual to see them around here in the southern Puget Sound (they were from B.C.) - they are overtaking our spotted owl's habitat, I was told by an Audubon member.
