1000% better than modern F1 - in fact i watch more archive footage of these days than I do current races - and the ratio is ever increasing - ie i watch progressively less and less current F1 as it deteriorates further and further - in fact its now about at the point I will walk away from what was once a sport I loved so much - its over - F1 is dead! Bears almost no resemblance to the mighty sport it was in 1985 - 1993
The driver position and general look of the chassis construction makes one wonder how Donnelly drove that car, let alone made it through that crash. I understand that driver safety and comfort was generally not worried about in those days but this car was asking for trouble. Lotus was pretty bad off after Senna left. They had talents like Donnelly, Hakkinen, Herbert, etc but no money for true development.
@racingfanTS14 The head/neck/shoulders of an F1 driver were very eposed in the cars of that era. Ultimately, it was Wendlinger's Monaco practice crash of 1994 that finally motivated the FIA to make changes.
Good vid! I always love vids from the 1990 Lotus(Hockenheim and Estoril), because the shaking and the perfect driver's eye line makes the sense of speed immense.
to all those who bitch about modern f1, drive one for 1.5 to 2 hours then say it isn't difficult.
(although it was more difficult back then)

No power steering, too, which meant that you had to be strong.

Great to see some onboard footage of Donelly. Such a shame his career was cut short by that horrible crash.
Man he's having to work double hard on the steering wheel and gear shift. Today it looks so effortless to drive an F1 car !!!

@X24RIDER Yes a lot harder to steer those cars...that was the real era of F1 not the Playstation-like cars of today.
