I've been advocating people, groups, and places as the three main entities needed to describe most of the activities that occur on campus. Give them representation independent of applications like Blackboard, connect them to each other to make networks, and let stories form (see smcdon's response) from all the activities that happen and information that's generated around the identities.

Rolling up identity from individuals into groups is good. Then you get into norms, culture and community.
