The Pacers played the Lakers for the NBA championship in 2000. Larry Bird was the Pacers coach and he screwed us, the Pacers, by playing his buddy Chris Mullin over Jalen Rose. Mullin was a good player in his day with Golden State, but he was an old, washed up player with the Pacers. All Mullin did was get beat defensively and brick three pointers. Jalen was in his prime and could have helped slow down Kobe. Shame on you Bird!!!
no one compares. he would fake players, fake out whole teams, steal back balls, pass to himself off the back board, shoote the ball and know he missed so as everyone was watching the ball travel he would go to the basket and lay that shit up (like a real man), shoot behing the backboard. no one has or will ever be as impressive as bird in shooting and agility. some come close and some are better athletes but he is the greatest in what he does best. bird is at least top 4 greatest players. DONE!
Larry Bird was one of the most fundamentally sound and prepared players of his playing days. He may not have had the speed other players had, but, he certainly made up for it in other ways. He was fun to watch play, especially, when he played against Magic Johnson and the Lakers.
He was the only player that i can rememmber that would actually bust the Doc(Julius Erving) i mean think about it!! hew would score on Dr J like nothing!!
Hrm. No acknowledgement for Bill Hodges, the man who pretty much re-kickstarted his career and set him on the path to his legendary status. Had it not been for him or Indiana State, there might not have been a #33 at Boston.
Maybe, but it might've taken a much different turn. I'm not saying Bill Hodges saved him, but he was persistent enough to motivate him into getting back into college.
@THEGREATMIAH777 Larry talks about Magic a lot. Larry showed up at Magic's retirement into the Hall of Fame...where is Magic here? You know what the answer is? The answer is....it doesn't matter. Magic and Larry have spent endless hours talking about each other and praising each others basketball abilities. They deserve a break from talking about each other every once and a while. So what if he didn't mention Magic at one speech? Damn.
@DrmrGuy1979 I didn't think he was out of line for not thanking Magic. I just think if anything he should thank him for giving him a bigger reason to be so competitive. Shit if there wasn't a Magic Johnson to play against then Bird would have gotten 5 or 6 rings.
Great upload, thanks for sharing. The great thing about Bird, besides the fact that he was multidimensional player (great shooter, passer and rebounder) is he has great stories to tell and has a great sense of humor Watch his interactions with other players and you will see genuine respect AND friendship. I'd love to hear more about his talking trash on the court. Had to keep his teammates and coaches laughing. What a teammate and what a career!!!
@arlichar11 What? Walton won a championship in 1977 being the leader of that team and then in 1986 with the Celtics being the 6th man, he's recognized as one of the greatest players (he's actually the best white center ever), even if his career was ruined by injuries he deserves to be in HOF.
For those who complain about his 3 point shooting, don't you forget that Larry himself admitted that for many years HE DID NOT LIKE TO SHOOT 3 POINTERS AND DIDN'T SEE THE POINT IN IT. He made some 3 pointers in his rookie season and then for 3-4 consecutive seasons he was shooting like ten 3 pointers in an entire season.
Pretty humble for a player who won the all star game contest so many times. It's just that Larry could score in a million ways and ONE of them was the 3 pointer.
@nasoszeppos wow. you have absolutely NO clue what you are talking about. 10 3 pointers an entire season? you COMPLETELY made that stat up. please get your facts right. there is absolutely no way in hell larry only shot 10 threes in a season
Do some research before you speak. Go check the site basketball-reference and search for "Larry Bird".
Bird had 11/52 3pointers in the 81-82 season, 22/77 in 82-83 and 18/73 in 83-84. Bird has written in his autobiography that he didn't like shooting 3 pointers until 1985 or so, when he was 28 years old and in the middle of his career.
"I'm a first class player and I expect a first class ticket"... That's what I call swagger and confidence.... Larry legend.... my favorite player of all time
I was there in person to watch this..... Never got to see Larry Bird play in person, but at least I got to see this moment in his career.
He was hyped as a 3 point shooter by the media and the card companies, but he was so much more than that. He had a post game, a mid range game, lock down defense AND shoot the 3s.
@thewolfmanchu You're right. He could do it all. The Celtics have a good team this year. The Pacers are improving too. I think the Pacers deserve higher draft picks. They are always in the lottery, and always seem to end up with pick 11 or 12 it seems like.
Yea, he really wasn't a '3-point' player, but it was winning that 3-point contest 3 yrs in a row, including calling that last moneyball shot pointing his finger while walking away with confidence that really cemented his legacy in NBA lore.
@Craig78910 You're absolutely correct...and most would go as far as to say that if he had certain athletic gifts that other players had naturally, he would be unquestionably the GOAT b/c he dominated the best anyway without freakish speed and hops....He was that good...MJ wasn't the greatest whenever he came in...he learned from Bird and Magic....but b/c they were both in the East Conf...MJ met with Bird more often...and MJ has him as the greatest SF of all time...MJ said that in 2010.
@Craig78910 Dude he was truly awesome...I had season tickets to the garden from 83 to 86 with my dad...i will say that if Larry Bird had an OUNCE more athleticism he would be the greatest EVER without question b/c he dominated anyway without freakish speed and jumping ability...he wasn't "Nonathletic" as they portray him to be...just the least athletic of his peers Jordan, Dr. J, Magic etc...In essence he was a freak b/c his timing, smarts and I.Q., cordination were superior to anyone else ever.
I like Larry Bird because he is an embodiment of what hard hard work is all about. I remember watching him one time on TV and he talked about himself. He said that some basket ball players were naturally gifted and they didn't need to practice that hard, while he had to constantly practice just to keep his rhythm in tact. To me then: Hardwork will help you exceed against anybody, no matter how gift they naturally are. Thank you Larry for the inspiration. HARDWORK all the way for me as well.
Having said that, Larry Bird is often used as an example of hard work overcoming natural ability; not true, in his case.
Larry had incredible natural advantages as a player; incredible hands and strong wrists, amazing body control, unreal hand - eye co-ordination allied with ambidexterity and much faster feet than most people realise.
Combine these things with hard work and you get one of the best ever.
What the greatest, Jordan etc. have in common, is hard work.
