I remember seeing Ian McKellen in Hamlet in Wolverhampton in the 1970s. He was brilliant. It was a matinee with an audience of schoolchildren. There was some giggling at times, and when he broke a strap during a fight scene but he carried on. At the end there was a standing ovation. The audience just kept on clapping and would not let the actors go and they kept having to come back to take curtain calls.
