  • you didnt really pass away did you?

  • your right to a certain extent but have you ever heard of a gas stove , I peel my roof off when i use it.

  • im with you..im not burning anything indoors... but can you use rubbing alcohol??? just curious..never heard of an alcohol stove until i stumbled on it...

  • i just use rubbing alcohol the 90% but %70 works to

  • I agree with you. The S-L-X is garbage.. I tried the stuff once in my alcohol stoves and instantly went to another brand that is "no more then 4% methanol" Works great now. The heet is good too.. :)

  • Interesting review, thanks for posting this up. I never would have considered air brake antifreeze to be a good methanol source. I've been using SLX for a very long time with very good results, no soot and no discoloration of my pots. I don't use a wide variety of stuff as I only own Evernew Titanium products along with a few of my own homemade stoves.

  • Very impressive, knowledge video! THANK YOU for answering so many questions about the fuels. Love some of your humorous replys. Keep up the great vids and...

    Happy Trails,

    Larry

  • Rum isn't made from grain. It is made from sugar cane or molasses

  • I thought one thing the put in denatured alchol was methyly which converts to an acid inside your body, makes your retina swell, and you go blind. Please don't tell people they can drink denatured alcohol, because they can't. You can drink Ethly, but not denatured.

  • Wouldnt the "heet" antifreeze poison the food your making on the stove?

  • @47Indigo47 Yes i have been dead for a couple of years now

  • @minibulldesign LOL! Well, thanks for making this vid from beyond the grave. Rest in peace, minibulldesign!

  • @47Indigo47 lol

  • What about 91% ISO alcohol??????????

  • @liquidturion Wrong stuff

  • long winded

  • sweet vid tinny its help me big tim just bought a alcohol stove now i won't kill it by mistake.

  • I use fondue fuel in my BIOS stove 2

  • I use grain alcohol when in an enclosed space with limited airflow ( vestibule while in a storm) and denatured medical grade alcohol for the rest.

  • @3A3P3D There is some important information in your thread. Are you saying that it is possible to poison yourself by getting Methyl Hydrate on your skin? Just wanted some clarification.

  • can u use the stoves in your garage if ur garage door is closed? ( mine has 2 small holes on the sides that lead outside)

  • likes the yellow bottle of heet the best never tried the white bottle

  • When I worked in computer repair business we used to use a bottle of alcohol from Staples which was used to clean electronic parts like circuit boards with Q-tips.

I remember reading bottle and it was about 90-95% alcohol instead of the medicinal grade's 70%.

I do not remember how much it cost. Might be worth looking into.

  • I don't think I''d try it, due to the volatility, but has anyone tried gasoline (petrol) in an alcohol stove?

  • @aMammoth He talked about that in his video. Nobody has tried it and lived. Alcohol is enough don't you think?

  • so what would u recommend heet or that other air brake anti freeze?

  • @mightywinston6 Try methyl hydrate in the hardware department.

  • would drinking alcohol work (beer etc.)?

  • @utterlystupidstuff so you think something that is 5% is gonna work better?

well it is not gonna work at all

  • Thanks for the tip Tin Man, your the best.

  • Hey there Mini, my Scoutmaster doesn't like me using HEET because it has a lot of something(where it can ruin your eyes over a period of time if you always get it on you) he wants me to use S-L-X; do you recommend that? Please respond...(im in boy scouts)

  • Use EverClear... seriously.

Burns hot, and burns long.... plus, it is really cheap and clean burning!!!

It is grain alcohol after all.

  • Is it safe tom use next to an open door or window?

  • Can you use Methol Hydrate?

  • what about methyl alcohol reacting with aluminum?

  • what about using grain alchol

  • What about 91% rubbing alcohol, i heard you talk about 70, whats your thoghts on 91?

  • what about kerosene?

  • thanks kinda like firearms you got to respect the danger of the fuel

  • your the man!

  • Hmmm... I switched from Heet to denatured alcohol but after watching this I think I'll go back to Heet. Thanks Tinny!

  • Hey thanks for the post! I test-burned 70/30 Isopropyl in my trangia stove not too long ago. it took about 12-15 minutes to boil a USGI mess kit container filled with water to about 75% capcaity and left light soot on the bottom. It worked well enough. I am looking into buying a small amount of PGA to keep in my backpack.

  • hey! do you have to put the HEET ito another bottle after opening it?

  • Ubutu Mawengwe

  • I use purple drank in mine!

  • heet = hot in dutch ;-)

  • oh nevermind

  • could you use the heet in the red bottle because i have that

  • no--wrong animal

  • ok thanks

  • tinny is it possible to burn methyl in a multi fuel lantern ? the Coleman lantern states gasoline, coleman fuel ect but i didn't or may have missed it. thanks for your tutorials much appreciated sir.

  • Never tried it but my guess is no.

  • thank you for the info and reply greatly appreciated. give sue and beth a hello from me.

  • Oh and about how much HEET does in take to boil a cup of water with a normal alcohol or penny stove?

  • Tinny, what fuel do you use because in your other videos you have a green liquid?

  • he uses exactly what you see in the video. the color you see is food coloring he adds so the fuel shows up in the video. if you want to know how much HEET it takes to boil a cup of water watch some of his other videos. you will see a timed boil

  • I love smut

  • When he was describing the Denatural alcohol I was like its a trap!

  • thanks for the help

    gotta get some HEET

  • Great info ;o)

  • Did the MSDS on peanut butter say it was full of rat poop because it was. Don't place your faith in a piece of paper.

  • Tip--if you see something you have not experienced. or something you do not think is accurate ---simply say---( i have not experienced this in any use of this product)--That way you get your point across and don't look like a know it all.--BYE BYE

  • Comment removed

  • FACT--SLX varies widely from can to can.

FACT--MSDS sheets are just that --sheets of paper that in the real world are useless. SLX is good and is bad from batch to batch--Proven fact by many backpacker experiences. Your very small sample is of no real value in the real world. It is at best-- a crap shoot-- and when you finally get a bad can you will see as I and so many others have.

  • @rappduane spoken like a true newbee

  • @rappduane lol

  • Now wait a minute---if it is 50% methanol and 50% ethanol--which i seriously doubt!!! Then what percent is all the crap that stinks and leaves brown residue on my pots and stove and make my lungs burn. This SLX is a wild card at best!!! Not suitable for alcohol stoves

  • I have heard that you can mix like 1/8 acetone with 7/8 methanol and it burns quicker because of the lowered boiling point and increased vapor pressure. Is this acceptable or would you suggest pure methanol?

  • PURE METHANOL

  • They denature it with benzene.

  • can you burn metholated spirits in your stoves?

  • yes

  • Comment removed

  • I got a gallon of racing fuel from a hot rod shop for $3.40. It's 100% methanol. I had to bring a can.

  • Just to clarify, S-L-X is approximately and consistently a 50-50 mix of methanol and ethanol according to its gov't regulated material safety data sheet.

As you said, and I agree, denatured alcohol from product to product is variable, but you can rely that S-L-X will consistently match the MSDS.

  • Ethanol has a much higher energy content per gram of PURE fuel than pure methanol. Methanol will vaporize at a lower temperature and is therefore prefered over ethanol only when it is cold outside. I would prefer 96% ethanol over methanol provided the other 4% is methanol and not just water. The SLX in the video is 50% ethanol and 50% methanol. Methanol is poisonous and deadly if you drink 60 ml of it. Some have died from drinking/absorbing less.

  • Have bought a Vodoo 3 stove from you and i live in Norway, can i use Acetone or Lynol or Ethanole in this stove?

  • methanol is poison. thats why its hard to come by. i would NEVER get it near food, even as a fuel.

  • great tutorial, thanks

  • Don't get me wrong, I absolutely would prefer to be using ethanol, but I just can't get it here.

  • "Everclear" from the liquor store. Is that outlawed in your town?

  • It should be noted that burning it isn't nearly as bad is ingestion, and the burnt fumes aren't as bad as actual inhalation (i.e. aerosol fumes).

Still, you want to have the best ventilation possible.

Also, denatured alcohol usually isn't full of anything terrible. It's usually denatured just with methanol.

  • i use methyl hydrate. 1 liter for 4 dollars at canadian tire

  • I was concerned about the toxicity of MH so I went searching and found the Motomaster premium gas line antifreeze at Canadian Tire is non-toxic and ethanol based. About twice as expensive as MH but worth it IMO.

  • I use rubbing alcohol and the bottom of my pots keep on getting that black stuff. You have any suggestions for me?

  • Either switch to Methanol--HEET in yellow bottle or add some of the HEET to the 70% rubbing alcohol to stop the smut

  • Thanks for the help Tinny, I really apriciate it.

  • I buy fondue fuel alchool from the dollar store. I also use it inside, while runnig the bathroom fan, and leaving a crack in the window to replace the air. In an old house that is badly insulated, it's not a problem, in a newer home that is well insulated, i would use my penny stove outside. I run 4 penny stove at the same time, and cook for about 20 minutes, and so far I have not had any problems. Thanks for the video it was informative. Mike.

  • Yellow bottle Heet works great, thanks!

  • I use denatured alcohol all the time and it works fine.

  • I purchased a bottle of air brake anti-freeze and tried it out. Works great. Thanks for all the tips tinny. -IamSunnyWalker

  • Just got my QMH kit with the Choke Hazard and tried the fondue fuel. Very clean, and got a rolling boil in about 8 minutes. Comes in a 500ml bottle so great size for a longer trip. I'll be putting it in a smaller bottle for shorter runs. Works awesome. Thanks Tinny!

  • To clarify, 8 minutes was when it steamed over nicely, so rolling boil time was more like 5-6 minutes.

  • That's exactly what I got at the dollar store here. Gonna try it in the choke hazard when I get it in the mail.

  • hey thx for telling me not to use comen fuel because my dad and his friend says that he thinks it will be better then that bottle of heet that im useing. and thx for telling me not to bye the red bottle of heet... im going with yellow no red... lol. i think this video is the best when it comes to knowing on what fuel to use im giveing you a 5/5 for this

  • Hey Tinny, you know about Fondue Fuel? I'm not sure what type of alcohol it is, but I've read it works well in alcohol stoves and they have it in the local shop here. There's no info on the label. Do you know if it works well.. particularly for the choke hazard?

  • Don't know about fondue fuel --give it a try and let me know

  • fondue fuel is fine, if you get it as pure as possible, the one i use is 96% ethanol alcohol, clear and no smell. (in swedish army trangia or simple tealight) i think i cant get heet where i live, at least i didnt find it yet.

  • @minibulldesign Just an update, been using fondue fuel for a long time and it works great. Cheap and available at the dollar store, some grocery stores, Canadian tire (for us Canadians), etc.

  • Will 91% rubbing alcohol work in these stoves?

  • no--No-- No

  • hey whare can you buy some good stuff for alcohol stoves?

    supermarket?

  • You mentioned mixing the two that is an excellent idea if you are cooking something and it burns too hot like for eggs do the mixture to reduce the temp coming out the stove and this can be used as a temp control. In a bios 3 or a choking hazard you may wish to start out with heet to get to a boil then a 50/50 mix to give it a simmer efect even elevate the pot should you feel the need to have an even lower temp. you probably already do this hence the differing colors in the little bottles.

  • hey can u mix like heet with denatured alcohol???

or would that be a waste ??

  • hi

where can i buy heet at?

i just dont know where to get it..

anyways thx for the info from the vids they helped a lot and i finished my simple alchohol stove but i just need the alcohol now..

  • Wal-Mart---or most gas stations

  • Nice information. Would give it five stars but the scientist in me gives it only four stars. Would have been nice to tell us the difference between methanol, ethanol, and isopropyl alcohol. Also, it appears pure methanol is the preferred fuel. A methanol/ethanol mix should also work as long as it doesn't have nasty additives.

  • Where would you buy this pure Ethanol ?? As far as I know there is no source. As close as you can come is 180 proof rum.

  • Pure ethanol is too expensive, but I work in a lab so I can get 95% ethanol. I'm just curious to know what the burn difference is between MeOH and EtOH.

  • I live in aus so no heet or anything like that but I have been using methlyated spirits - is this good?

  • 5 Stars man, cut to the chase and like it is, thanks!

  • Has anyone tried high grade vodka or rum? Just out of curiosity?

  • I use a liquar from your local liquar store called Everclear. The problme with it is it may not be avaliable in your area cause its illegal in some state do to it very high proof. It can also be expensive. But I know alot of back backer use it cause it all natural and ou can even use it for cut and bruises or a mix drink too. :-)

  • oh..yes I am farmiliar with the drink! Thanks for the info :)

  • And I can't type worth a damm at 6 AM in the morning! lol

  • Tinny, you are so cool. thanks for the info.

  • Great video on fuel if you burn all the oxygen in a closed room you will die simply from lack of oxygen you just go to sleep. So trucker's alcohol is the best great to know. Ever try to burn ever clear in a stove that would really piss off the winos.

  • So what do you usually use Tinny? A mixture of those products or a single kind of fuel?

  • Air brake antifreeze

  • large pot of water: 3 minute rolling boil.

Tinny check out 'jet alcohol stoves' by youtube account:

    lebammabel

  • could work if:

    - made from a tin with a screw on top &

    - with a little slider to cover tiny holes to convert it into simmerish mode. maybe shut one of the two pipes down.

looks like the wick's got to be small so there is space in the tube to carry hot air back to pressurize the tank. Borde Benzin Brenner:

  • Great Job! Thank you very much!
