  • Just can't get enough....

  • @bendabledoll

Bah, you're right. I got too caught up in my favorite version. I appreciate the female version, I think I just have a massive bias towards singers who express it like this guy does.

  • @GlassCurtain

And that, my friend, is how you sing.

Perfect description between the two. Thanks.

  • i'm playing both versions at the same time...bang.

  • Something I noted about the two versions was the presence of the bass in this versions. The fact that it is so much more prominent makes this a lot better in my opinion. I wish it wasn't so in the background in the other though!

  • step one:pause

    step two: new tab

    step three: open female version

    step foar: play both

    step five: PROFIT

  • @TheNuclearbomb11 Yes, I totally thought of doing this before. They choose to sing the lyrics in different ways. Sounds kind of off but fun.

  • Pause the song at 0:00

Open a new tab (or window?)

    Got to rainymood(dot)com

And then play the video asap and jizz ur PANTS!!

  • im so glad that the top comment has stayed there for so long

it really just says it how it is

  • LOL "Man Version"

  • If you play the female version with this one at the same time, it sounds amazing.

  • Cowboy Bebop is the absolute GREATEST television series of ALL TIME! And this is coming from a guy who doesn't even like anime all that well. Goodbye Spike! We'll all miss your crazy adventures and emotional struggles.

  • @PatrioticEagle50 Aw MAN! careful throwin around those spoiler alerts! lol

as spoilers go...thats a pretty big one

but yeah bebop is great. that and 21st century boys are well celebrated in this house

  • still <3 you

  • Were it possible, I would make love to this voice.

  • LOL man version

  • I dunno, I like both versions but this one definitely has more soul. its like GlassCurtain said, he feels the notes. Where as the girl simply sings them. I dunno I like this one cause you can feel each note move him, plus i love the sound of his voice cracking when he sings "Walk" and "rain.

  • steve god voice conte

  • Great version of a already great song boy did he make you feel the song, but i liked the female version too so its kinda hard to say who is better; so i say as someone else said listen to either one and go with how you feel.

  • eh the female vocal is better, the organ necessitates singing the wholeee note

    waaaaaaaaalk in the rain

  • I'd day this version is better. I like his voice especially when it harmonizes when he says ''the days are just like moments turned to hours''

  • Isnt it weird how Cathedral Organs are so powerful, so deeply moving, and yet so damn creepy?

  • I love this song... both versons are fantastic+++

  • Since everyone else is giving their two cents... I can't help but agree with there not being a best version. Steve Conte sings like he feels it, like he's experienced all the context in it; his is painful and emotional. Mai Yamane's, matches the loneliness and suppression hinted in it. The first line of the song is, "I don't feel a thing," and her version sounds like someone walking alone, holding back feelings.

    Play whichever matches your mood!

  • download anyone link???

  • I like his version better. He doesn't sing the song, he FEELS it. The girl sings it good... but that's just about it. Steve Conte makes me feel as if I'm part of those sad and confusing feelings. LOVE IT!

  • definitely prefer the voice of this one compared tot he female version. There's just more depth to it.

  • man version + female version = LOL

  • lol "man version"

  • this song makes me feel good, in a strang way. especily when it's raining:)

  • I think he is a great interpreter and singer of how this music have to be sung BUT...

... at the same time he sounds to "alive" at some points. Like in the beginning " I dont feel a thing " sounds a bit passionate to me. It would be better if it would sound more exhausted and empty.

  • This version is infinitely superior to the other one, imo. It has pain and soul.

  • I also think she has the best ending, it really escalates midway and becomes more and more haunting, that “all alone” in the end. But I think she rushes a lot of the song too, especially with the chorus- she’s almost drowned out then. His stays really solid the entire time, and he makes every gorgeous line really sink in, “silent faces in the ground.” Good god!

Hearing both versions is like comparing cake and ice cream I think, whatever does it for you. Me? I like to taste both!

  • Can't pick… First time I heard him I thought... It's over, sorry lady! He just wakes you up. He clearly sings with the most feeling, its mad, free even transcendental. BUT I just played Mai Yamane again today, and it gave me chills. Hers is at least the most hypnotic version, she sounds like an angel. Though its more reserved, it could be deeper. TO BE CONTINUED

  • this is fuckin Beautiful

  • song i want to play at my funeral

or the garden of everything (Another song with steve conte and sakamoto)

  • sounds like bono

  • I love both versions. People like the female version better because of the moment it appears on Bebop. It begins one of the greatest endings to a Cowboy Bebop episode

  • The quality nearly killed this song.

  • @TrickyMagican Ballad of Fallen Angels i think.

  • what episode is this from

  • @LAWILKS1027 Ballad of Fallen Angels i think.

  • Anyone else think that the ending to Cowboy Bebop was sad?

  • @DarrelHerring Sad but fitting.

  • There's just something more soothing about the female vocalist. I think they're both good, but she has a...quality to her voice that seems to give it that emotional umph.

  • Sort of has an Aerosmith tone in the beginning

  • so when in the series (or if it's in the movie) did this song play?

  • I will always prefer this version. The struggle is more real here, and I simply love it.

  • The chick singer is good. She hits the notes but this dude feels the notes. It's a struggle for him...which encompasses the song. Steve's version is the best.

It's one thing to know the notes. It's another to feel the notes...like they know you.

  • @GlassCurtain Took the words out my mouth. I couldn't exactly put my finger on why I felt this one was better than the chick version, but I always felt his version a little more than hers.

  • @GlassCurtain Its mixed for me, I think the woman's vocals are better, but I think the mans version has clearer music.

  • @GlassCurtain agreed.. with all of my soul.. agreed

  • @GlassCurtain read my mind

  • @GlassCurtain I think its just different qualities of feeling, rather than 1 version being feeling, and the other having none. Steve brings the fire, his is an expressive and soulful sound. Mai is like water, she feels through despair, its an introspective version. I listen to both all the time-- & always run into fans of one trying to make light work of the other. But its apples & oranges. Lets just close our eyes & listen to one of the most beautiful songs to ever grace the kingdom of Anime.

  • steve conte..........rain...

  • its a powerful song period, now if there was a duet it would win sauce

  • @ph33rt3hn00b There are duet versions! Check it out :D

  • @ph33rt3hn00b yup there is look it up

  • @ThetrueAloveFor i did....i faovrited it...and manly tears welled up

  • this and samurai champloo are the best aimes i ever seen

  • what episode is this song on?

i just barely started this show yesterday. just for this song

  • @MISAEL602 It's Session 5 - Ballad of Fallen Angels. This is the episode that got me.

  • @MISAEL602 haha I did the exact same thing, I watched cowboy bebop because of this song. In fact this song is the reason I got into anime in the first place, I'd watched a few studio ghibli films, but bebop was the first anime series proper.

  • @BENebuchadnezzar same thing with me. i wasnt into anime untill i saw this show . any other shows you recome i should watch?

  • @MISAEL602 There are some cool animes out there. I recommed you the 'ultimate' season of "Hellsing" - cool stuff with vampires, a lot of blood and so on ... or something like "Wolfs Rain", "Samurai Champloo" or the "Ghost in the Shell" movies. Another classic is "Neon Genesis Evangelion".... Watch "Golden Boy" if you like it some kind of dirty and funny ... - have fun

  • @MISAEL602 erm yeah, i agree with the guy below about ghost in the shell, samurai champloo and wolf's rain(especially the latter two), but you got others (a little more mainstream mind) like bleach or naruto. Epic films include 'grave of the fireflies', 'Akira', 'Spirited away', 'princess mononoke', 'ninja scroll'. You also got inuyasha (I got a bit bored though), eureka 7 (done by some of the same guys as CB, ending's a bit cliche and weak, still worth the watch).

  • dammit, I just replied but i think it got lost, so I'm just gonna give you a list

Films: Akira, Ghost in the Shell 1+2, Princess mononoke, Howl's moving castle, laputa castle in the sky, nausicaa of the valley of the wind and the sea, metropolis, For really stunning imagery watch anything by Makoto Shinkai. For a sad film watch grave of the fireflies.

Rurouni Kenshin (film and series). Bleach, Naruto, Wolf's rain, samurai champloo, inuyasha and 'death note' (which i think is shit).

  • @MISAEL602 Not to dissuade you or hack on anyone's likes, but none really compare to Bebop's level. A lot of them come close to the editing/writing/sound/plot, but Bebop is arguably still the tour de force anime series.

  • @AveAugustus yea ive seen other anime and it aint the same as cowboy bepop

  • @AveAugustus really? cause I've tried getting into Bebop a few times over the years, it just do anything for me. Am I the weird one?

  • @lordseshomaru86 Cowboy Bebop isn't for everyone. it's more serious than the usual anime and don't have the same pace as most others.

it's more for character developement and immersing yourself into the characters to pack an emotional feeling.

  • @MISAEL602

a good one is trigun as well

  • @satansprdgy is it? whats it about?

  • @MISAEL602 Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is awsome too =)

  • @MISAEL602 Trigun is very good show you might like.

animeratio is a very good anime website that has it

  • @MISAEL602 FLCL, trigun, elfin lied

  • @sk8er4ever0101 FLCL, trigun and samurai champloo are all worthy of cowboy bebop but i don't think elfin lied is as it has a different feel/genre about it plus excessive gore that really isn't like bebop or trigun although elfin lied is great it doesn't give off the same atmosphere as bebop

  • @MISAEL602

    Samurai Champloo

  • STeve Conte version is awesome....

    Cowboy Bebop....epic

  • This song is really beautiful in a tragic way

  • does any one know how i can get this song?

  • best part of the song is at 3:07

  • it's like he's screaming, WHY?!!!!!!!!

  • without spike walking through purple mist towards a decripit church, this song becomes just another song.

  • this version reminds me of Seal....which is ok with me, Seal is the shit.

  • This song blows compared to the original by tech n9ne

  • @dwreck0322 That's not the original, dumbass. You remind me of those idiots trolling Van Stephensson's Modern Day Delilah going "KISS VERSION BETTER" when they're two totally different songs.

  • @dwreck0322 Actually he took it from Cowboy Bebop. But his version is pretty rad too. I hope he did it as a fan of the show.

  • @dwreck0322 other way round son

  • i love the music in this anime though i wish i could find like a soundtrack on i tunes or im stupid and i can't find it lol

  • @waterliles The soundtrack for Bebop? It's on Amazon.

  • wow this song feels so nostagalic

  • I think both versions are lovely and they both show excellent emotion. I have to say I'm a fan to both.

  • I heard this one first so I like it more, strange huh?

  • @BIueharvest not realy blue , could just be a coincidence =P.

  • I'm not sure why people keep complaining of this guy's "raspy" voice... I've far better that way because of that. It sounds like he's crying, screaming as well as singing giving the powerful emotion of pain that he feels. Ive been ill most of my life and I can't feel emotion to relate to enough with the female version. I understand that many people like it just for the fact that it was used in the show.

  • @AlexTriad *It's far better that way because of that.

  • dude...someone mixed both the male and female versions together!!! it was AWESOME!!!

  • actually the female version was in the show, thats why its my fav but love them both! give me chills! amazing music, amazing show!

  • Am I the only one a little put off by the way Mai Yamane emphasizes some things? "Or'sit wrong" and the way she shifts the emphasis in "why do I feel so alone" sound awkward, whereas Conte, a native English speaker, sounds much more natural. Yamane does incredibly well considering how most Japanese sound singing English, but still sounds awkward, particularly put up against a native speaker of the language.

I haven't seen anyone else mention this, though, so maybe I'm just crazy and nitpicky.

  • The way his voice is strained conveys so much more emotion than the female version. Steve Conte gives the impression that this is a situation that's hes actually in and not one hes just singing about.

The female version is too processed, too bland. Don't get me wrong its good, but it doesn't really compare. Focus less on the sound and more on the emotion being conveyed.

That's why some bands can spend thousands altering their songs and still not be as good as one sung freehand.

  • @ComicSanMS Given that they're in a church or chapel, and Spike's life (and everything implied there)...I'm pretty sure it's supposed to sound like that. It's somehow more ethereal that way to me.

  • Best version there is

  • If you ask me, both give great versions. Yamane always had the more technically correct and better sounding voice, but Steve Conte always seemed to put a little more emotion in it than she did. Both are on constant rotation on my playlists, both are amazing.

The male vocals were the one used in the TV show though I believe. The female version with Yamane was an alternate take that Kanno nixed for the show.

  • Both are good people, they both got something the other does not have. I give them both a 10/10

  • Good music loved the sound of it.

  • whaaaaat, i've never heard this version, this guy's voice is out of control good

  • oh dude im syncing this version and the female version and it sounds awesome

  • Great anime, great soundtrack... this one with evangelion the best of the 90'anime

  • agreed

  • Wow, both versions are incredible. I love both of them a lot. <3

  • I give respect to this version but yamane makes the song feel how i'd invision it. Everyone will prefer either one over the other.

  • @Drrailaa i love yamane's voice, but i think that, for this song, conte's sounds better, i cannot imagine blue with his voice though.

  • Tech N9ne used this in his song "The Rain (Welcome Back, Party Hard)"

  • This guy reminds me of seal, in a strange way......it's not a bad thing, seal is great.

  • I merely prefer the male version because that was the one i heard first

  • This is such a great song. I personally prefer the female version, but I'm just a fan of Miss Yamane. When it comes to this song, it's all subjective. It's great no matter what though.

  • Son of a bitch this is good.

You wouldn't happen to have an mp3, would you?

  • I love this song, but only the male version, the female version isn't bad at all, but this version is better.

  • wow, this one's different

  • too awesome, cowboy bebop had the best soundtrack

  • Mai Yamane sang the version in Session Five: Ballad of Fallen Angels when Spike is walking up to the cathedral to save Faye. Steve Conte's version (this one) is available on the box set. I like both versions. Steve also did a lot of work on the Wolf's Rain soundtracks.

  • One of the most awsome song I heard...pity that this kind of music newer reaches most of the people.

  • @Thauglorymorgorus I can't remember who is was, but a rapper ripped off, or "sampled", this song as the back track to his song a couple years ago. So in a way it did... but it's not a good song (the rap).

  • songs like this and "Call me Call me" should be playin on the radio... it's a pity.

  • a girl sang this one in sum version?

  • Steven Conte is one ugly fk, but hes got a godly set of pipes.

  • i resent that lmfao

  • It was stupid to use the inferior female version in the anime. Steve Conte is an awesome rock vocalist.

  • No, they used the female one.

  • Inferior? Get over yourself, it's just your taste.

  • hey, mai yamane contributed a lot of her talent to the soundtracks of bebop and her version is plenty fine. It wasn't inferior at all.

  • but this one is better =D

  • I think which version is better is actually personal taste. Personally I think the female version is a lot suitable for the church scene. After all it's Mr. Shinichiro, the director of the show who had picked this.

  • I don't know why they gave you a -4 ..but I agree with you...though each artist did their own thing to the song..but I love the Male version better..due to the sound of call me call me..and his other songs..

  • Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

But yes, I agree with you. This singer rules. I love his Ghost of the Shell songs (like 'Lithium Flower' and 'Beauty is Within Us'), too.

  • You're right...though I guess that saying(or any opinion regarding that saying) will garner a person's crucifixion with negative ratings if said on youtube...Sad is it not?..LOL

  • It doesn't bother me in the least. But people apparently loved the chick singer way more than this guy, which I think is a major, major error.

  • @ArchdukeJames i agree , there were 2 women who sung this song though if i remember? one of them WAS good. perhaps yoko kanno or , perhaps maaya sakamoto?

  • @ovhan1 I believe it is Mai Yamane only. I have never heard of an alternative female version.

  • @ArchdukeJames I prefer Steve Contes version BY FAR, this song is made for his voice, like call me call me or garden of everything. He has his own band too, the contes, who rock =P

  • @Unagichan Yeah, they totally rock shit. I have caught his live performances of some of his anime songs and they rule.

But yes, I agree. This song fits his voice so well.

  • Those two songs are by a guy named Scott Matthew who also has some really good songs :D This guy sang "Living Inside the Shell."

  • This my favorit song from the anime!!! T-T

  • i love this song.. omfg its so amazing!! T^T

  • i like his version better :]

  • Same, i think it is because the straining of his voice creates so much more emotion.

  • Listening to both versions of this song is really good, is like they compliment each other. The female version version gives a subtle vibe of sadness, more like loneliness, while the male versions gives a stronger, sadder vibe, like the sadness of having lost something or someone important.

When you put them together, it gives you a song with a very hard melancholy feeling to it, a song that makes you remember the people you've lost in your live.

  • I wish they had this version on Itunes but they only have the women's version =( not that the women's versaion isn't good but I like this one better.

  • I love Steve Conte.

He does great music for Wolf's Rain too.

    :)

  • I like the man version more but I got something whit male voices, the sound better for me...

  • J'adore!

  • i prefer the male version it just sounds better somehow to me

  • steve conte FTW

  • This song goes hard!!!! I wanted to play this piece to my homeboys and they were like, "This song's creepy" and they wanted to hear something else. This coming from guys that wanted to hear N-Sync. C'mon, some of the best music out there is not on BET or MTV.

  • this song is so great and it sounds like there is so much emotion behind it

  • cowboy bebop

we all know this is one of the all time classics, what surprised me is that anime now has become far too mainstream, there hasn't been a classic been released in years.

  • It's making me sad to see something I like rising to a mainstream popularity.

But dude, the problem is not the popularity but rather the folk.

No one in this time could simply enjoy.

Everyone chew through everything till it have lost his "magic"/classic. Also ...

no one really deal with the anime they just watch it - accept it.... not more ... and this makes me sad.

  • Someone mentioned this on another video, listen to both the male and female versions at the same time in sync, it sounds amazing! It's pretty tough to do though, and the female voice is a sec. faster. I recommend everyone trying it.

  • No lie I tried it and it does sound amazing together. I also recommend trying it.

  • The female version doesn't have as much power to it, i think... this version is much more emotional, and seems more raw somehow. Mai Yamane's version feels muted to me.

  • Agreed. But I wish there wasn't so much rasp in his voice. He can hit those notes without sounding so stretched.

  • i did, i didnt like it

  • it always falls out of sync like halfway through for me.

  • Great song from a great anime. Ep05 "Ballad of fallen angel" is one of the best of CB.

  • The best version of this song. Steve rocks!

  • Steve Conte and Yoko Kano Rocks in each of there versions of this song.
