@hawlemnyair What is your justification that statism is right or even ethical? Nobody is talking pragmatism, we're talking ethics. You're not talking about ethics when you ask how services will be funded in a voluntary society.
But okay, what's my justification? Here it is: I'm not so egotistical to think that I could decide for even one other person how their life should be run (and, even if I did, I would never use force or violence to do so, but words), and I expect the same courtesy.
That girl must have been brought up by socialist parents who wouldn't mind seeing; cars banned, guns banned, meat banned, free speech banned, cell phones banned, internet shut down, electrical power shut off, and open borders.
@n310ea Change your "socialist" to "extremely liberal" and you will have what you truly intended. Just keep in mind that not one individual can be lumped into any particular group. Everybody is different and should not be treated as though they are the same.
Nice job Ian. It's easy to criticize a video, but I'm terrible at answering people's questions on the spot. One thing I would criticize, however, is the tone you used when you said "don't you?" like at 0:32 . I don't think you meant it, but I'd bet that kid took it as kind of condescending. If he's talking to you, I'd bet he's intelligent (if misguided) and might respect you a bit more if he felt you were treating him like an adult.
But excellent answers. I bet you planted a seed in his mind.
But you don't even need to 'end' the state schools - just make the taxes that go to support them voluntary, and then each person chooses for themselves. If funding dries up, then that means that it was never a priority for the taxpayers in the first place, and the schooling service is best provided in the market just like food or iPods.
@libertyplayground Personally, it just seems like a good way to cause a lack of education for poor communities. Poor communities will not have the money to donate for schooling. Although, going by your logic, it is not that they do not have the money, it is that they do not have a demand for it. Please explain how private voluntary funding will work in lower income communities. Cheers.
@hawlemnyair Every person learns differently and there is no such thing as a one size fits all when it comes to education. The idea that anyone could come up wit ha system that works for everyone would be absurd. The idea of replacing the current system with another one then becomes absurd. Individuals should be responsible for their own education as well as that of their children. Not one person should ever be forced into a system, or to pay for someone else to use a system.
The kid's point that people wouldn't buy schooling in a free market is completely unfounded. Using the same logic, people wouldn't buy food and would just starve because the state didn't provide it.
As for charity to take care of kids who don't have parents with enough money to buy schooling, that is a charity issue and USA is generally the most charitable nation - just look at the aid that pours into places like Haiti and N.O. after Katrina.
@libertyplayground Yes, but charity to places like N.O. after Katrina dry up after a short amount of time. Happened with Haiti after the earthquake as well. They get funding for a time after it hits the news, but after it is out of mind the funding dries up.
I love this. Thanks posting this Adam. Ian explained it in simple terms. I would have said if government school was so good, then why does government need to use force and coercion to fund it?
"but most people wouldn't pay money" Precisely. Because it is far less valuable than one would like to admit.

Would you suggest no taxes? or how about a system of taxation in which you can sign in online to choose where you want your tax money to go.
What about the police force and firefighters. would you prefer them private?
What is your premise that capitalism and privatization is right, or even ethical?

Most honest quote ever.

Force is the problem - I agree. Interesting video and its neat to see somebody out there challenging conventional "thinking."
