  • Hey, the song is great! :D

can u send me the sheets in a message? :)

  • I feel like hearing the original music...

  • your going a bit slow your at ~78 tempo it should be 92

  • This music was used in a Richard Gere movie some years ago.....and it was very effective.

  • I love this mate!

  • you did this very well...sounded like the theme in the movie breathless...

  • Wauw, really. Sounds very pure and clean. Thank you :)

  • This was so helpful man, thank you.

  • this is great. I can't read sheet music, so i'm learning by ear and I really wish your left hand wasn't cut off most of the video! Other than that nice job! You've been helpful to me

  • @MasterChieeff Me neither. I was introduced to Philip Glass' work via recommendation or comparison to music I've made years ago. It only made my interested in classical or minimalism. both of which Philip Glass tackled, peak.

  • Beautiful. You got good taste

  • I LOVE YOU!

    - I am completely in love with this song, but hadn't got a clue how to play it. Where can i get the sheets?!

  • very well played... ;) you've got it. But the acoustic is not the best... :P

  • Hey there! Love the way you played! :D It's awesome! can you send me the sheet music?

  • Robert Von Hebb (July 26, 1938, Nashville~~+~+~* was here on "their behalf" yesterday & today on 08/05/2010 "call me" an African American singer and songwriter.

  • redemp+ion~in GOD's name do you think i could have been "rehabilitaed?" If the real Queston is Tortured, most certainly sir every day. So, "let U.S. not +alk~* falsley now the hour is ge++ing late." Have i been rehabilitaed "SUNNY?" the answer is no just tortured by the laws of the inhumane treattment of prisoners that is condoned by "our society." i had really craved a honest rehabilitation & an education so i could be like you in that chair "SUNNY' but no $ir you have a job and I DO NOT..

  • please show me how to play this slowly so i can learn 3 against 2

    douglas

  • Nice playing, and right choice, I think this is the most beautiful piece of Philip glass... Could you send the sheet please??

  • You are amazing. :) Please please send me the sheet music. I've looked everywhere. D:

  • Awesomely played!! ^^~~ I was wondering if you could send me the sheet music for it?

  • I just finally got the hang of the triplets-against-eighths thing a week ago! I can play this song pretty fast now and it's fun :P

  • Very nice, Enjoyed it!!!

  • this is wonderful you do it very but very good.... wish to learn it like you...

  • It's to hard to play those two different times against each other like that.

  • Beautiful!!!

  • This is very well done. Thank you for sharing.

  • playing sounds great. music sounds like shit.

  • Love your choice of tempo.

  • Too bad to waste good playing on an out-of-tune practice piano. Next time try a performance piano that is properly tuned!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • na, i like his beat up piano just fine thanks, adds texture and somethin....

  • mmmm, possibly, but i like it this way, the old piano sounds good to me, it has somethin old and resiliant and strange about it,as i said, i like it!

  • @hippitybippitybop You suck bibbity.

  • i can play this GOOD JOB do you know what grade it is ?

  • Thanks everyone for your magic comments - I'm just happy so many people have enjoyed this (even with my mistake at 2:07!) Peace :)

  • @troppochook You're amazing! pleasse pleeease paaleeease can u pleease send me the sheets?

  • In the same ryhtm try to play Vague by Anouar Brahem. It's a good introducing to 2&3 rythm.I've learn it with this song .

  • very great performance

beautiful workout of the two different rhythems left n right

    great

  • Oops! A small mistake. In 2:07 you typed the Bb (finger with the ring) when it should be the Ab (first is Bb, second is Ab). That's the beauty of this part. Bb, Ab, then G.

  • You're totally right there! I didn't see it till about a year ago - must have got over excited when I got the hang of the coordination :)

  • Nice, very nice =) It looks so easy, that I could think to play it someday xD

  • absolutely beautiful. i've been lost in this chord progression all day.

  • I saw him do this live. While waiting for the sun to go down, so he could show a film. I did'nt know the name, thanks.

  • AMAZING

  • how did you learn to play compound and simple rhythms against eachother cause im trying to learn it and its so difficult to learn :/

  • i know!

but start with putting your chords on a simple progression.

like every beat one short chord, play that for four beats, then start your melody, and with a little practice you will be able to do this!

  • it's 3 over 2, the way I think of it (slowly) is 1 2 & 3. On the first beat, both hands are playing, count 2 is just the right, the & of 2 is Left, and 3 is the right hand...r/l r l r. take it really slow then pick up the tempo as you get more comfortable with it.

  • @benadude glad you found the response video to help out :)

  • @benadude im not sure if it will help, but the rhythm of this song is based on whats called a 2 over 3 polyrhythm, look it up on youtube, and other places, learn it first with tapping things with your hands

    the rhythm goes

    B R L R

B being both hands, R and L right and left respectively, (refering to hands) just continue that and if you get it you could be able to apply it to any song. hope this helped

  • @benadude for me, it's easiest to think of them not as separate ostinato rhythms, but as one compound rhythm played over two hands. try tapping the rhythm on your desk (or something else that produces no pitch) and you'll hear what the resulting rhythm is; this made playing this common Glass pattern much easier for me.

  • bellissimo

  • congratulations:)

  • Hello! =) do u know where i can find the sheet music? It would be great if u have it =)

  • maybe i can finally learn 3 against 2, by watching how you do this..

    bravo

    douglas

  • It's incredible how you hear a melody out of just a series broken chords with a quirky rhythm. Thanks for sharing this its a beautiful piece and lovely performance!

  • brilliant

  • Can anyone explain to me how this rhythm works? It's bugging me...

  • It's 3:2 (triplets against 8th notes).

  • Thank you! :)

  • its really odd, but eventually you just get it. It's similar to learning how to ride a bike. just keep listening to the original and try for yourself.

  • amazing,

i see you are enjoying the music (your shadow is on the music)

  • Very fluid

    difficult rythmn

  • oohw.. i love that song!

    u play that so wonderful....

the rhytm is really difficult to play...

    best regards

  • You did a great job both as a performer and as a teacher, I've never seen a more concise explanation of the rhythmic pattern. Thank you very much for sharing.

  • You are an angel. I am very grateful for your attention

is really difficult find to score here in my country.

Again thank you very much for your help, and when you need

something please feel free to visit my.

    Pablo

  • pablo, can you direct me to where you found the sheet music for opening? i looove this piece too.

    thanks.

    *laura

  • please. i need the sheet music of this pieces, i be eternally grateful for you help

    Thanks Pablo

  • btw this piece reminds me of prelude no.1 from the well tempered clavier by Js bach. I learned that song about a month ago.

  • the difference is that the prelude is a fantastic and eternal piece of music, while this one is an obsolete piece of garbage.

  • very difficult rhythm to learn lol, I've been playing piano for 3 months

  • I'VE DOWLOAD IT FROM ARES

  • also erm, yh at the beggining i found it hard to graso but like 2 hours later i Smacked it! the next day i woke up i could repeat this over and over no mistake.

Once u know how the rythem sounds u can

play it easy, thats how i learn it.

  • oh yeh, btw i can also play this on 1 hand (right hand)

  • Thats was beautiful!! Where did you find the sheet music for this piece? Please let me know :)

  • Tell me please where have you got this sheet music?))

    I can't find it anywhere

  • me neither -.-

  • quantum chaos on the planck level formed into greater order

  • I am a pianist of almost a decade and I still have found it so difficult to master playing triplets over eighths. Do you have any suggestions/techniques that you could share with me that would be of any help. Much appreciated. Thank you. wonderfully executed performance of the ever-minimalistic Philip Glass. The only thing would be to not cut off from the ending so abruptly; savor the music!

  • it's super difficult. i had to just play triplets over and over again until they were second nature. just keep working the triplets until you don't really have to count them and you're just moving in the groove. best of luck!

  • A teacher taught me to hear the triplets/eighths rhythm as "not difficult not difficult not difficult..." That helped. I also spent a lot of time just trying the rhythm (for this very piece) with my fingers on my lap. Finally figured it out while riding the Metro in DC one evening.

  • hey, where did you find the sheet music for this? opening is my favourite piano song and it would be greatly appreciated if you told me where to find the sheet music

  • Hi umbrad: 'Opening' is one of the pieces in -

    Philip Glass

    The Piano Collection

    Publisher: WISE PUBLICATIONS

    ISBN-10: 1846094747

Be aware, however, that (in my copy at least) there are a couple of mistakes: a missing repeat mark, and a bar in the right hand that has the correct notes, but in the wrong order.

  • Hi troppochook. Seems like you're offline for a while. Thanks for posting - I enjoyed this.

Minor quibble (at the risk of being pedantic!): B flat in the left hand at 2' 08" should drop to A flat before the change into the final four bars.

  • temnothorax is correct.

  • Nicely done! Is there any way you can post the sheet music? I've been looking everywhere for this piece and I can't find it!

  • i was trying to figure this song out for the longest time but it never sounded right. Then I saw your video on the 12&3 and now it sounds right. Thank you so much. You wouldn't by chance no Mad Rush. If so...please. Another video would be greatly appreciated in my land.

  • Woa! spot on. Very nice, dude.

  • Fantastic,thanks a lot!

  • thanks a lot man really..

  • well done!

  • your video is by far the best on here

could i put out a huge request for you to record it slightly more zoomed out? I'm stuck after the 7th bar!

  • really tnx man.... you play so beautiful ... tnx alot really.. next weak i will study this piece... tnx

  • This is beautiful! And thank's for shooting the video really close to the keys! Would be easier to figure out than just listening (I did that with the hours, took me a while lol)

I'll give it a go at it tomorrow =P

  • inspiring. i can't wait until i have time to completely figure this one out.

  • I first heard this in the Richard Gere film Breathless and think its beautiful!...

  • I've never been able to balance triplets and eighth notes.

  • Wow, this is triplets vs. straight eight notes...

Just found this song through the Breatless movie w/ Richard Gere.

  • i would like tohave acopy of the sheet music please

  • beautiful

  • A classic by Phillip Glass...I first heard this when I was attending Berklee College of Music, I was 17 and had never heard anything like it. Sometimes I think I learned more from my friends than I did in the classroom! great job! Scott

  • I had a buddy who graduated from Berklee just a couple of years ago -- he's a drummer.

I've not seen much of an improvement on his all-around music skills..... He seems more confined to rules and the technicalities than ever before. And to add to that - his incredible debt he's in because of it.

But I hear they have some superb instructors who teach there.

  • Are personalities have a lot to do with it too! Some never grow, some never get much experience, some think all the knowledge in the world is in books...I hope he grows with his instrument. Thanks for the reply, Scott

  • That was a really great performance of an absolutely beautiful Philip Glass piece.

Plus, due to the camera angle at which you have filmed it; this video has allowed me to observe the notes you are playing and teach myself this piece. I have also viewed your "How to" video and that has helped me on the tricky rhythms.

    Thank you!

  • Where can you find music sheets for this?

  • buy them. if you like the piece that much, buy from a vendor who gives a portion of the profit back to Mr. Glass. besides, what's $13? i'd give up a meal for great music anyday.

  • Agreed, I need to find this piece. :]

  • wow. THat was wonderful! :D Thanks for putting this up!!

  • Why all the bad vibes? This is clearly a person who can play well. Enjoy the music.

  • i think its hard to play it because of rhytm and coordination of speed in both hands, isn't it?

  • Where can I find the sheets?

  • no i dont have sheet music sorry :(

  • bad interpretation, sorry

  • ok you're opinion.. can We see you're version please? :)

  • yeah, i wil

  • Thank You looking forward to it :)

  • yeah, have u the seet??? if u send me the sheet i'll play it, i only have "the mad rush"

  • i compared your playing with the original

recording. becous i thaught u ripd the sound

from cd. but i geuss u have not

    but im not sure

(if u did not than this is a compliment ;) )

  • I am spirit touched, I must learn to play this!!! amazingly beautiful ty for posting, My regards :)

  • Everytime I feel overwhelmed in any job I come here to hear this beautiful piece. It´s not so hard to play but I need the score. I couldn´t play it with you video, since there are variations that you don´t explain. Anyway is a good and generous effort. And this is a nice gift too. :-)

  • Heard in the movie *Breathless* :-)soulful...

  • Simply elegant.

    Wonderful! My regards.

  • wonderful !! I still enjoy listenning to this music every time i can doing it.I'am really amazed by P. Glass's music....

  • I recently succeeded with this piece after a couple of weeks of battling with the timing. Surprisingly (or not), i got it when i was high.

  • it's so beutiful that i always cry when i hear it... i regret that i can't play the piano.

  • Btw: This is the best minimal music ive ever heard!

  • That's Glass for you.

  • its harder to play than you think, you'll see when you start with it...

The music makes you like "in trance" :)

  • Why is this a video response to "Still Alive?"

  • this is very interesting.....i enjoy watchin this

    keep up the good work.

  • Lovely! Well played!

  • you performed thsi very well, I love philip glass, he tought me how these sequencing tones in music worked!

  • What a trip! Ripples of notes engage into one another, sharing space or harmoniously fighting for it, in constant flow. Not an easy interpretation piece..you did a great job!

  • Cheers! A beautiful description... Is quite a trip to play when you lose yourself in it. :) I get a bit nervous with the camera on me but working on this!

  • just remember we are flying through spaceverywhereverythingr8orWAYbettereally.

    every note sublime!

  • they can't "just remember!"

they have to play the notes as well :)

  • This is the greatest version on Youtube :) I love it and i love u for sharing this beautifull music with me :D

  • You are too kind! Truckloads of LOVE to you too! :)

  • can not get the timing can you upload a slow version including counting and some tips

    Thanks

    Tony

  • Hi Tony, will do this soon! :)

  • Done! - see video response above. :)

  • Awesome. Can you tell me: where can I get that sheet music?

  • Can't relocate it on the net (why did I not bookmark?!), but I will msg you re sending it. Cheers :)

  • Very nice

  • Thanks :)

  • also, it could go on like that forever,it doesn't seem to have a key, or is it written in a key? that's what's so fasciniting about minimal music

  • Sheet music I have repeats this 3 times - but could go on forever! It has a key... C minor. Great to see so many Glass fans... Best wishes :)

  • Hi , you mentioned you might be able to record a slow version with counting this would help as im cant get the timing right

    Thanks and great playing

    Tony

  • Have uploaded a vid (see video responses) to help anyone having difficulty with the timing. Best wishes for happy playing and listening to all! :)

  • such a cool piece, philip glass is my favourit minimalist :D so addictive innit

  • I like this music very much, great play!!!

  • Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers.

  • beautiful playing. i struggle with the timing on this one, but getting there, youre video helps, thanks!

  • Happy the vid helped you. Addictive to play too. Thanks for your kind comments and all the best.

  • Loved it.

  • very good. Excellent use of camera here. Have you got any playing tips for this peice. I have seen the sheet music for this and find the 4th bar hard to believe - when I play it it all goes wrong.

I am right in saying the left and right hands dont always match up their notes but sometimes the left hand jumps in just in between right hand notes.

  • Thankyou for your kind comments. You're correct about hands. Your right hand is playing the rythym: "1,and,and; 2,and,and; 3,and,and; 4,and,and". While the left plays the rythym: "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and".

  • Start slowly and try using the count "1, 2 and 3" on EACH beat. EG in the 1st bar... on the count of 1 play F (right) and F, A flat (left). On the count of 2 play A flat (right). On the count of 'and' play C (left). On the count of 3 play F (right). Repeat this count for every beat. Please let me know if you are still having trouble and I will post a video playing slowly whilst counting. All the best!

  • Good advice. I will use this shortly when I rework on the piece. I see the way you break this down with your counting. Very analytical.

  • absolutely correct- if u watch troppos newest reply u will see...

anyway - does anyone remember which advert this song is from? i think it was a car ad - troppo you may remember it from SBS? I Cant remember the actual ad though but it was beautiful.

  • Mmmm - nothing in my memory box re an ad using this music, sorry. Anybody? I first heard Glassworks on a cassette I was given when 16 years old in Amsterdam. I listened to it over and over and over whilst reading Lord of the Rings - always reminds me.... :)

  • finally got it... you are a true hero. i will post a vid as soon as i can smoothly transitionmfrom 3rd part to final part. ps... it only took me 13 coopers pale ales to get it right! its amazing how your mind can focus under the influence...

  • Congrats! Unfocussed focussing always the most effective :) Look forward to your vid. Best wishes, mate.

  • lovely playing

  • nice work :)

I (also) couldn't find the sheet music , you helped me a lot.. big thx

  • Thanks for your comments - great to see such music being appreciated by so many! Working on my own composition at the mo - very Glass-ish - surprise surprise! but at the same time troppochook-ish... Philip playing in Groningen, Netherlands this month. How about some footage on YouTube - anyone?? :)

    om mani padme hung

  • Great rendition, very accurate.

  • Thankyou. Peace to you!

  • I like it! thanks for filming it that way too, I couldnt find the sheets for that piece and could never play it properly by ear. Thanks ;)

  • Cheers for the comment - my first! I found the sheet music free at dj's music archives on the web, but have been unable to locate it again, unfortunately. Happy piano peckin'... look forward to see your vids... start uploading mate!
