this is great. I can't read sheet music, so i'm learning by ear and I really wish your left hand wasn't cut off most of the video! Other than that nice job! You've been helpful to me
@MasterChieeff Me neither. I was introduced to Philip Glass' work via recommendation or comparison to music I've made years ago. It only made my interested in classical or minimalism. both of which Philip Glass tackled, peak.
Robert Von Hebb (July 26, 1938, Nashville~~+~+~* was here on "their behalf" yesterday & today on 08/05/2010 "call me" an African American singer and songwriter.
redemp+ion~in GOD's name do you think i could have been "rehabilitaed?" If the real Queston is Tortured, most certainly sir every day. So, "let U.S. not +alk~* falsley now the hour is ge++ing late." Have i been rehabilitaed "SUNNY?" the answer is no just tortured by the laws of the inhumane treattment of prisoners that is condoned by "our society." i had really craved a honest rehabilitation & an education so i could be like you in that chair "SUNNY' but no $ir you have a job and I DO NOT..
Oops! A small mistake. In 2:07 you typed the Bb (finger with the ring) when it should be the Ab (first is Bb, second is Ab). That's the beauty of this part. Bb, Ab, then G.
it's 3 over 2, the way I think of it (slowly) is 1 2 & 3. On the first beat, both hands are playing, count 2 is just the right, the & of 2 is Left, and 3 is the right hand...r/l r l r. take it really slow then pick up the tempo as you get more comfortable with it.
@benadude im not sure if it will help, but the rhythm of this song is based on whats called a 2 over 3 polyrhythm, look it up on youtube, and other places, learn it first with tapping things with your hands
the rhythm goes
B R L R
B being both hands, R and L right and left respectively, (refering to hands) just continue that and if you get it you could be able to apply it to any song. hope this helped
@benadude for me, it's easiest to think of them not as separate ostinato rhythms, but as one compound rhythm played over two hands. try tapping the rhythm on your desk (or something else that produces no pitch) and you'll hear what the resulting rhythm is; this made playing this common Glass pattern much easier for me.
It's incredible how you hear a melody out of just a series broken chords with a quirky rhythm. Thanks for sharing this its a beautiful piece and lovely performance!
its really odd, but eventually you just get it. It's similar to learning how to ride a bike. just keep listening to the original and try for yourself.
You did a great job both as a performer and as a teacher, I've never seen a more concise explanation of the rhythmic pattern. Thank you very much for sharing.
also erm, yh at the beggining i found it hard to graso but like 2 hours later i Smacked it! the next day i woke up i could repeat this over and over no mistake.
I am a pianist of almost a decade and I still have found it so difficult to master playing triplets over eighths. Do you have any suggestions/techniques that you could share with me that would be of any help. Much appreciated. Thank you. wonderfully executed performance of the ever-minimalistic Philip Glass. The only thing would be to not cut off from the ending so abruptly; savor the music!
it's super difficult. i had to just play triplets over and over again until they were second nature. just keep working the triplets until you don't really have to count them and you're just moving in the groove. best of luck!
A teacher taught me to hear the triplets/eighths rhythm as "not difficult not difficult not difficult..." That helped. I also spent a lot of time just trying the rhythm (for this very piece) with my fingers on my lap. Finally figured it out while riding the Metro in DC one evening.
hey, where did you find the sheet music for this? opening is my favourite piano song and it would be greatly appreciated if you told me where to find the sheet music
Be aware, however, that (in my copy at least) there are a couple of mistakes: a missing repeat mark, and a bar in the right hand that has the correct notes, but in the wrong order.
i was trying to figure this song out for the longest time but it never sounded right. Then I saw your video on the 12&3 and now it sounds right. Thank you so much. You wouldn't by chance no Mad Rush. If so...please. Another video would be greatly appreciated in my land.
This is beautiful! And thank's for shooting the video really close to the keys! Would be easier to figure out than just listening (I did that with the hours, took me a while lol)
A classic by Phillip Glass...I first heard this when I was attending Berklee College of Music, I was 17 and had never heard anything like it. Sometimes I think I learned more from my friends than I did in the classroom! great job! Scott
I had a buddy who graduated from Berklee just a couple of years ago -- he's a drummer.
I've not seen much of an improvement on his all-around music skills..... He seems more confined to rules and the technicalities than ever before. And to add to that - his incredible debt he's in because of it.
But I hear they have some superb instructors who teach there.
Are personalities have a lot to do with it too! Some never grow, some never get much experience, some think all the knowledge in the world is in books...I hope he grows with his instrument. Thanks for the reply, Scott
That was a really great performance of an absolutely beautiful Philip Glass piece.
Plus, due to the camera angle at which you have filmed it; this video has allowed me to observe the notes you are playing and teach myself this piece. I have also viewed your "How to" video and that has helped me on the tricky rhythms.
buy them. if you like the piece that much, buy from a vendor who gives a portion of the profit back to Mr. Glass. besides, what's $13? i'd give up a meal for great music anyday.
Everytime I feel overwhelmed in any job I come here to hear this beautiful piece. It´s not so hard to play but I need the score. I couldn´t play it with you video, since there are variations that you don´t explain. Anyway is a good and generous effort. And this is a nice gift too. :-)
What a trip! Ripples of notes engage into one another, sharing space or harmoniously fighting for it, in constant flow. Not an easy interpretation piece..you did a great job!
Cheers! A beautiful description... Is quite a trip to play when you lose yourself in it. :) I get a bit nervous with the camera on me but working on this!
very good. Excellent use of camera here. Have you got any playing tips for this peice. I have seen the sheet music for this and find the 4th bar hard to believe - when I play it it all goes wrong.
I am right in saying the left and right hands dont always match up their notes but sometimes the left hand jumps in just in between right hand notes.
Thankyou for your kind comments. You're correct about hands. Your right hand is playing the rythym: "1,and,and; 2,and,and; 3,and,and; 4,and,and". While the left plays the rythym: "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and".
Start slowly and try using the count "1, 2 and 3" on EACH beat. EG in the 1st bar... on the count of 1 play F (right) and F, A flat (left). On the count of 2 play A flat (right). On the count of 'and' play C (left). On the count of 3 play F (right). Repeat this count for every beat. Please let me know if you are still having trouble and I will post a video playing slowly whilst counting. All the best!
absolutely correct- if u watch troppos newest reply u will see...
anyway - does anyone remember which advert this song is from? i think it was a car ad - troppo you may remember it from SBS? I Cant remember the actual ad though but it was beautiful.
Mmmm - nothing in my memory box re an ad using this music, sorry. Anybody? I first heard Glassworks on a cassette I was given when 16 years old in Amsterdam. I listened to it over and over and over whilst reading Lord of the Rings - always reminds me.... :)
finally got it... you are a true hero. i will post a vid as soon as i can smoothly transitionmfrom 3rd part to final part. ps... it only took me 13 coopers pale ales to get it right! its amazing how your mind can focus under the influence...
Thanks for your comments - great to see such music being appreciated by so many! Working on my own composition at the mo - very Glass-ish - surprise surprise! but at the same time troppochook-ish... Philip playing in Groningen, Netherlands this month. How about some footage on YouTube - anyone?? :)
Cheers for the comment - my first! I found the sheet music free at dj's music archives on the web, but have been unable to locate it again, unfortunately. Happy piano peckin'... look forward to see your vids... start uploading mate!

how did you learn to play compound and simple rhythms against eachother cause im trying to learn it and its so difficult to learn :/
benadude 2 years ago
i know!
but start with putting your chords on a simple progression.
like every beat one short chord, play that for four beats, then start your melody, and with a little practice you will be able to do this!

Good advice. I will use this shortly when I rework on the piece. I see the way you break this down with your counting. Very analytical.

anyway - does anyone remember which advert this song is from? i think it was a car ad - troppo you may remember it from SBS? I Cant remember the actual ad though but it was beautiful.

Mmmm - nothing in my memory box re an ad using this music, sorry. Anybody? I first heard Glassworks on a cassette I was given when 16 years old in Amsterdam. I listened to it over and over and over whilst reading Lord of the Rings - always reminds me.... :)
