well..... the animations are saved based on what kind of composition are you going to do, if it's a simple stuff i save it in avi, but if it's a complex animation, it has to be saved in RICH PIXEL FORMAT to keep all the information from 3DS Max such as Material ID, Object ID, Z Dept, Shadow Maps, ETC......

render it with animation and save to path. and select what kind of video type do you want...
