Can anyone name the personnel in Fats' band? Specifically, the guitar player. Looks like he's playing the same model Gibson that Eddie Lang played, an L-5 I think.
I was under the impression that the vocals were a part of the original song, and was disheartened when I found just the piano in the original song. I must find an MP3 of this version!
All I can say is thank you for this video. I'm in jazz history class and this paints a clear picture of the larger than life personality of one of jazz's all time greats.
My favorite Fats Waller song (well, in my top 5, since I couldn't honestly pick one single best from among so many greats) is "If It Isn't Love." I'd be forever grateful to anyone who can find and post that one. In the meantime, thank you for these musical treats!
Lovely song and dance number. I love older retro clips it reminds me of childhood. I spent a lot of summers watching old movies on the tube. Enchanting.
@SusanSusaw Yes I recognized her too, I recall her being on an episode of Good Times. She was James Sr. (the children's grandfather) girlfriend! I've also seen her in many other things as well!
first video ive ever seen of fats waller. im 20, white, and just started playing piano. this man is a legend and an idol. whatever happened to entertainers like these? oh boy i want a time machine.
fats is the business - no-one comes close - this is such a charming and beautiful arrangement... i am lucky that my father introduced me to fats as soon as i could walk, nevermind talk - i can't imagine life without listening to fats - he is my favourite perfomer of any kind, any generation, any genre - the charm, warmth, personality, his band, everything is just sooooooooooooo wonderful! i was born in the wrong era BIGTIME LOL - haha go-on fats you legend! xxx
@theerealgaryhill mate thank you soooooooooo much, really - i'm a huge fats fan, heard a similar live version before but not quite like this and certainly without the video... knowing this exists has made my life so much the richer... top one for uploading it! any more soundies of fats out there? cheers dude x
When I think of the word "Virtuoso"... Fats always is one of the first to pop into my head...
Fats Waller deserves so much more recognition than he gets these days... I recently discovered him... And I'm glad that footage like this is still around for younger generations to watch...
It's really amazing to actually take a minute and think about how long ago this video was made...
@bdw118 You know what's even more interesting? To think about how not actually that long ago this video was made by comparison to the greater span of human history. It's interesting to see how much our society changed in one and a half centuries, given how little it changed in the almost 1,000 years prior.
@XianarRett When I first read your post I thought it was something I had wrote myself... I often find myself BAFFLED by how the human race has advanced so quickly with technology in such a short period of time. It really makes me wonder why we suddenly started making so much progress in the early to mid 20th century. just thinking about what has changed in he last 20 yrs makes it more puzzling. On the other hand I don't think we have advanced at the same pace as our gadgets.
@tmhclearance Definitely; I often feel our technology advances faster than we do now days. Still, one cannot help but be astounded by what humanity is capable of; and regardless, here's to Fats Waller, and great music in general; and the wonder of technology that allows us to still enjoy this in 2012.
This soundie contains some really cool progressions and shows how much of an entertainer he was. This is one of my absolute favorites of Fats. Great video, best music.
Love it - thanks! My mother was lucky enough to see the Armful in Montreal - guess early '40s - before I was thought of. Yow!
