  • Tom is right, you know?

  • its christmas eve and I cant stop listening to this...

  • taa said this was good just now....

  • Come back to Sweden for one performance.....Plz

  • Great recording!

  • This is for when I'm sitting at my bar drinking a kenzinger with that 1000 yard stare cause I don't know where works coming next week.

  • There is nothing like finding a new favorite artist :)

  • @tigers260 i hope for you to feel this again, tom has taken my soul when i was around 12

  • this song teaches you how short or long life could be, but somehow, it makes you realise life is shorter than you think and one way or another you will end up as a bunch or dirt, an yeah you will be on the ground motherfucker,

  • His voice sounds like 20 Marlboros per day... :)

  • @6481726 more like 20 cartons a day

  • His audiences clearly respect him so much... Not a sound till he was finished

  • I like how Tom Waits can revisit his older songs and not only make them sound new again but also add new emotion without damaging the integrity of the song.

  • Does anybody have a high quality mp3 of this ? Wonderful performance !

  • Today my Mum died, this is the first song, im listening to.

  • @mrblonde609 That's really sad to hear, man :-/

But good choice, none the less. I find that T.W. has songs for all parts of life.

  • @BobcatSchneidermann

Thats true. He made Songs that can make you feel invincible, but other songs can make you feel like youre a vermin or something. Tom Waits is a genius when it comes to control an audience.

  • @mrblonde609 That's horrible about your Mum dude, stay strong fella.

  • No one else could make a song like this. Tom Waits has made a lot of amazing music, but this might be my favourite song of his.

  • attention congregation!... rev. waits has something to say...

  • I was lucky enough to be at this show. From start to finish, just genius.

  • that 1 dislike is just Tom self depreciating as always :)

  • The three songs by Tom I want played at my funeral- Cold Cold Ground, Come on Up to the House, and Dirt in the Ground.

  • Just....unbelievable...

  • great voice:-) genial

  • This song and his voice........ they're just perfect

  • No comments?....Well then I'll say something:This has got to be one of his best songs truly well done!

  • don´t you just want to sit in the corner and stare at the world with this music on? :)

  • @bokkkyyy yes.

  • @bokkkyyy

Remember - we all gotta pull

  • beautifull song... i just love it...

  • damn

  • My heart hasnt been devoted to so many women as maybe it should, but at this moment it was licked by this song. I will forever feel in debt to Tom Waits for giving us all such great fucking music, he's a true artist

  • Its so nice to know that im not the only one who feels that fuckin respect to Mr. Waits... I Wish I could see him live someday... but here in Mexico i think im going to be the only one in that concert lol...

  • @heser I know too well what you are talking about. I live in Hungary. 99% of people i met don't even know who Tom Waits is. It's just sad...

  • I'm fascinated by Tom Waits and his music. He's truly a great artist. what a beautiful song,

  • this version is so full of emotion, not just any emotion, downtrodden, beaten, the kind of emotion that only a weathered, hard life can produce.

  • lol was watching this movie Jerry and tom from 1998 when i heard a track that just caught me .. no wonder when i realized it was good old tom.. damn

  • He's most likely the best song-writer and singer in the history of humankind...

  • sounds like an evil Louis Armstrong

  • Emotion in the voice, wake up.

  • I love this version it's so soulful than the studio version.

  • kissed my heart and ripped it to pieces.. Thank you mr. Waits

  • I dont think this is better than the album version, just different.

  • 616Hell, thanks for uploading this fantastic version!

Tom is singing us the truth. Whatever invisible friend we have faith in, we will live and love and expire.

  • why compare versions rather than discuss what each version accomplishes? yeah, the album version is more sinister, but this is downright sorrowful. each version is satisfying. don't dis just because you missed the concert.

  • It directly c♥mes from the Heart...

  • thats right, tom. we're all gonna be dirt in the ground

  • i love tom waits, so many of his songs can reduce me to tears just from their beauty

  • he sounds like he's ingesting gravel

  • I actually prefer this version to the one on Bone Machine. On the album his voice is too shrill. Here it's somber, and matches the tone of the song.

  • I agree

  • yep... you're right...

i wonder if he did "the earth died screaming" and "murder in the red barn" in this style too...?

  • I didn't have a problem with his treatment of "Murder" on Bone Machine, but I think you're right. This voice on "Earth" would improve the song.

Now I have to look for it.

  • I completely agree.

  • I actually love his voice on the album version, it's much more sinister, just makes the song stand out much more for me.

  • You're completely wrong. The album version sucks dick compared to this.

  • i disagree a lot of intonations in his voice have been lost in this version

  • @TheAmazingAtheist No it doesn't.

  • @TheAmazingAtheist I wonder what he's "completely wrong" about. His personal preference for the other version? Hmm... that makes me wonder if my preference for corn on the cob over canned corn is completely wrong too. I mean, I get this pleasant sensation when I eat the former and an unpleasant sensation when I eat the latter, but I could be misinterpreting the whole thing. What do you think?

  • @CynikalDog Nah they're good in different ways. The album version grows on you. In fact the fact that the vocals in the studio version are somewhat uncomfortable to listen to make it all the more fitting, as it deals with a subject that is quite uncomfortable to address.

  • @CynikalDog - Yeah, I think it's unfortunate that artists tend to release studio albums soon after they've created their songs, then the songs only mature musically after they've performed them a few thousand times. I agree, this is a good example.

  • Cain slew Able. Time to consider your death. Have you?

  • what´s that suppose to mean?

  • Dirt in the ground, death and all that. Just an observation.

  • heh... i guess different people interpret same things in different ways...

but the entire song generally portrays the inevitability of death, a dark and gruesome end for everyone...

  • the song makes me cry

  • his voice is savage

  • joe louis is the god of boxing

    tom waits is a newschoolpoetwiseman

  • Tom Waits is an amazing artist. Very emotional song.

  • Song sounds like it was inspired by Louis Armstrong's version of St James Infirmary

  • funeral song

  • This is insanely awesome.

  • I adore this guy!

  • saw him at Dublin -

    It was fantastic, as expected.

This song is one of my favourites

  • Best recording right here.

  • One of the best songs ever. Such powerfull lyrics....

  • The best song of the tour!

  • This is THE SONG they will play at my funeral ! Drove 1200 km just to see him perform live Milano, he was great...as expected.

  • dayum bruh!! how about takin the plane next time? :P
