I like how the names of the crew are all mentioned at the end. It brings it closer to the whole tragedy. May they rest in peace and may we never forget them.
The Great Lakes are no joke. I've seen freighters on Erie and had to make a full throttle run on a good sized salmon boat from a T-storm on Michigan. The weather can change drastically in minutes. To imagine something that big going down like a canoe is humbling. R.I.P Cpt and crew.
This song gets me every time. I pray that one day the'll find the evedence to reach a difinitive conclusion as to what happen so that those 29 lost souls can finally be at peace.
Where the Fitzgerald bottomed out it was shallow. Between that, the ruff seas, blinded & probably the worst storm ever recorded on the lake....they didn't have a chance. What is so unfair, the Coast Guard blame the men 4 not fastening the hold hatches securely. U want the whole story, Discovery Channel has a 2 part program on this including interview with the Captain of the Anderson who was following the Big Fitz. I couldn't imagine what went thru the men's minds @ the end, I'll never 4get this.
In a book "How to go to the Bathroom in Space" the author writes that you cannot see the great wall of china from outer space, but the Great Lakes can be seen. F/X
@fx12246 None the less. The Great Lakes is not that deep and it's shallow water. for a human to swim to the bottom may be a depth but a ship of it's size. It's more the ignorence that it was overloaded by 15 tons. It scraped bottom of the man made canal. Amazing they have videos of the take off. The amount of smoke and waves it made it appears it created it's own storm. A embarrassment known fact they have a marker that it can't sale if water is over the marker. Massive oil slick.
@redviper2GAMER Lake Superior is 222 fathoms (1,332 feet) deep at it's deepest. The Mighty Fitz went down in 88 fathoms (530 feet). If she was overloaded by 15 tons that's .0000005% of her 26,000 long ton capacity.(58,240,000 lbs as a long ton = 2240 lbs).
Lake Superior has a surface area of 31,820 square miles - 350 miles long and 160 miles at it's widest point. It's know for some of the most volatile storms with waves reaching over 30 feet and temps that freeze the water on contact.
@fx12246 I saw redviper said Great lakes are shallow. He/she doesn't know what he/she is talking about. These lakes are enormous especially Lake Superior. For the most part you can't see the shore on the other side and all you see is beautiful water. You certainly ain't going swimming in the middle of it . I don't know about you but i cant' swim down the the bottom at over 1,000 feet below the surface. I find Lake Superior to be beautiful and powerful. This is no wussy little lake.
This is a fine version of the song. My eyes mist up this very day.
Navigating the Great Lakes is some of the most difficult in the world due to their latitude and the weather conditions in winter are pure frozen hell. God bless the souls of these brave men.
thank you so much for a touching, informative, and thoughtful video to accompany this so deep and hunting song. i can remember the news broadcast the day the Mighty Fitz went down. again, thank you.
its sad and iteresting i love learing about the titanic. i love this song. i am trying to find a video with this song on and it is showing the people on it and the boat. send me a message if you find something like that:D thanks
well done with respect . i was 13 when this happened and i can remember the news reports on television i also delivered newspapers for the buffalo evening news and remember the stories in the paper i now live near lake ontario and while ive seen some big storms on lake o they are nothing like superiors storms i recently toured a retired lake freighter in clevland the edward mather and it really brought back the memories of the fitz
Out of all the videos I've watched; this one was most impressive. I remember the wreck, I remember the song. And still get choked up over the line "and all that remains are the faces and names of the wives, and the sons and the daughters'. I was young then, and remember thinking how I would feel if my father's line of work could take his life one day and he'd never come home again.

Sir, you need to follow up on your forensic evaluation. Tissue decays but bone does not. And the fact that the wreck went down in fresh water means that the bone is better preserved than it would be had it been in salt water. There has been bones found from shipwrecks dating back to the 17th century. And just for the record, the '94 expedition did find a skeleton on the lake floor next to the wreck of the Fitzgerald.
