I think that their using the old traditional style of Muay Thai because the one they use in the ring isn't the one that was first created. That's like a watered down version of muay Thai so they can use it in competition fighting
I think the old one is called muay boran. Which consist more fancy looking kicks that's why it looks like Kung fu
i know i will get a lot of downs for this, but i liked the 1st one better simple yet effective.....this one tried too much story and lost the plot.....my opinion...
everyone here says this is muay thai, but the more i look at it, the more i see kung fu taken into play, 1:36 is Drunken fist, 1:51 he is using a 3-sectioned staff, 2:00 looks like he is using a rope dart, 2:10 he is ground fighting using crescent kicks and rapmetoi kicks (don't know if i spelled that right), i don't know what muay thai looks like, but this looks like kung fu to me, then again all martial arts derive from kung fu
From what i see, Tony Jaa is just an overall impressive martial artist, mixing different disciplines into his combat. During the protector, I recall him throwing in the caeopeoria (sp?) move when he was facing Lateef Crowder. Granted, this is all choreographed, I believe Jaa would be able to successfully mix disciplines on the fly.
@Screaminguy youre bound to branch off from whateverf art you take you know? i dont take kung fu or antrhing but i do practice various kicks not just round kicks from my muay thai, though i represent it as my official art you know?
@Screaminguy He uses a combination of many different styles in this movie including knung fu. but just because he uses certain weapons that doesn't mean he's doing a particular style
@Screaminguy sorry but no they dont india has the oldest lineage to kung fu, but your right the first time i saw this i thought it as mixtures of kungfu and muay thai, crescent kicks are used in muay thai though. but the use of drunken style mixed with muay thai is really intruiging, unpredictability and powerful strikes!!!
Ong bak 2? No this has nothing to do with the 1st one. Why don't they think up of a better name? And all of this fighting is all Kung fu, where's Muy Thai? This movie like his other lame ones(all has to do with revenge or rescue an elephant) are going to SUCK. Such a waste of talent. Tony needs better writers.
Tony did all the Muay Thai in his previous ones, what more can he shows (don't worry, he'll do some in this movie, he has to). Good story often result in crappy actions. Even if there are good actions, there is not enough to keep us entertain.
I agree, as long as it not another rescue story. He hasn't done a revenge one yet, the first one (Ong Bak) is finding a holy relic. C'mon, most action is based on revenge, that is the best reason to kill people in movies.
Although I agree w/you to an extent on this comment, "Good story often result in crappy actions. Even if there are good actions, there is not enough to keep us entertained," but if you look at Batman Begins, it is very well done. Strong cast and very strong story that makes the audience care about the characters. The story and action flowed. But on the other hand, Tony was never an actor. He had always been a stunt man, that's why we really don't see much acting involved in all of his movies.
remember, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Biao start out as stunt men, too. Well look at Jackie, Sammo, and Yuen now. Eventually, Tony Jaa will get the hang of it.
It's quite interesting to see what kind of idiots come out, especially those who can't use proper language when speaking. they HAVE to use foul language. It's a shame Tony has fans that are morons like you. Learn some respect. Mommy and daddy never taught you or did you learn how to speak like that thru TV and movies? Dummy!
wow wait a second we are all tony fans here and i do not agree with what you said first of all have you seen the movie. if you did you would see that he used traditional muay thai and classical kung fu( hung ga really). the other thing is this is a story of revenge but it is way better then the protector. you should see the movie before you start to review it.
yeah this is kool .....but um didn't the first ong bak take place in present day? or is this supposed to be a prequel? or is it the siritual successor?
Good action.

Doesn't he also use Muay Boran? I think the fight before the last fight in Tom Yum Goong involves Muay Boran. Correct me if I'm wrong though ;).

KILLERZ0000 2 years ago
Oh yes , at last Malay SILAT is being seen in the movies .
Too many people would prefer the more stylistic approach of Chinese Martial Arts and Korean Taekwondo over the local and South East Asian styles.
Flash over practical i presume?
Even muay thai is considered practical rather than flashy.
No doubt Muay Thai was great and so is the other styles but SILAT rarely gets its worth in any movies.
And by no means are SILAT easy to learn , it is still a Full Contact Martial Art.
