He's playing the Joe Birchfield version from the Roan Mountain Hilltoppers. Or some sort of variation of it. Always surprising to hear this version of Sally Ann since it sounds nothing like the more common one.
I LOVE THIS BAND!@!!! I went to the big ole San Francisco Bluegrass Old Time Festival's square dance last night at the Swedish American Hall (part of Cafe du Nord) on Market Street last night. 220 young people all decked out, and the Freight Hoppers were so hot, I mean BURNING the whole place up... we had SOOOO much fun... the place was sold out and it was all we could do to get in. These guys rock... Just ramp this music they're playing up tebfold and that's what we were doin.. crazy fun!
The Fuzzy Mountain Stringband got their version from Tommy Jarrell.

This tune sounds like a tune called "Cat Tracks" and don't remember who composed it.

I love that haunting sound from the fiddle. Perfect for a song about a lynching.

Best version of Sally Ann I've ever heard.
Really digging the fiddle.
Such a mournful drone...
Nice pulsating tempo.
Can't stop rockin'!

i can remember Byard Ray playing a version very much like this one. Which makes sense as much of David's fiddling was got from this neck of the woods

Thanks for posting that. I've wondered about this version of Sally Ann ever since I heard it on Dirk Powell's Time Again

@Jorsh123 Hey you seem to know some stuff. Do you know where the version of Sally Ann that the Fuzzy Mountain Stringband plays comes from?
