  • But she sounds 16 is that the point, and you should note this piece is not very difficult for young sopranos with a good range and she does lack the resonance and maturity obviously, but it's very nice but I have a 12 year old student who sounds similar,, lovely though

  • This is one of many videos I have uploaded that has been subjected to a phony copyright claim by "Orchard Music". This is a public domain recording. Please do not click on any links below the video. This criminal conduct by Orchard Music should not be rewarded.

  • Divine!

  • The French title is actually "Les Filles de Cadix." I first became familiar with this song through Miles Davis' version on jazz trumpet. The song is about a knight or cavalier who is passing through and propositions the local women. They reply that the girls of Cadiz are "not that type." Cute.

  • Technically Deana may have lagged {slightly} behind the more acknowledged divas

but her voice was the sweetest and, to me, the easiest to listen to.

  • Who is Jane Powell?

I have never heard of her.

  • @maxhansendk Jane Powell is wonderful; I love them both. Most famous for playing Adam's wife in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers!

  • @maxhansendk Also, Jane was great in Royal Wedding with Fred Astaire. I love her, but Deanna is even better.

  • @maxhansendk Jane Powell was a soprano who became popular in a string of MGM musicals in the 1940s and 1950s.

She was a teenager when she first hit it big in pictures like Holiday in Mexico and A Date with Judy. Later, in more grown up roles, she starred with Fred Astaire in Royal Wedding and Howard Keel in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

  • Deanna's range was A below middle C, up to E above high C. Magnificent!

  • So beautiful voice! So clear!

  • This is so beatiful. I so adored Deanna Durbin, watched most of her movies. I've never seen this movie though, thanks for posting it. It's a bit sad that whenever they do a program on PBS about music in Hollywood they "forget" Deanna Durbin. It's so wrong. She won an Oscar, I believe, and she was very popular both in the US and all over the world.

  • A voice of great clarity and precision. Compare the beautifully talented singer and great actress Anna Netrebko singing the same song. Like almost all singers, Netrebko has first to hear the note she is singing and often make a tiny, almost imperceptible adjustment. Durbin doesn't do this. She just hits the note perfectly, right from her brain with no feedback necessary, every time. Tragic she withdrew at 27 (Hollywood bums). But poor kids like me got to hear her in the 30's and 40's.

  • It is so wonderfull performance!

She was just 16 years old when she sang so difficult song like this one :) it is amazing. She is great!

  • Deanna Durbin is the reason I got interested in opera, film, filmmaking, black and white movies, acting and singing. There are many things I've been fortunate to experience in my life because of these interests. Who knew flipping channels in eighth grade and landing on "Three Smart Girls" could change someone's life? :)

  • Durbin and Powell are both great!! I think Durbin was more of a" professional" . Meaning she was all around "better". However, I love Powell's singing and listen to her more often. As for who made the most movies, Well, that's no way of judging who is best. Times where changing and opera singing in the movies was not as popular in Powell's time.

  • i love this:)

  • Durbin, always Durbin! Powell had a flat voice with no good quality!

  • Wrong!!!!!!!! they are both wonderful. and if this is so, why then did durbin not make as many films as powell?

  • Durbin made more feature films in 12 years (21) than Powell has in over 60 (20). Durbin starred in all 21 and was top billed in 20 of them. Powell was top billed 8 times. As far as who is more or less wonderful, that's up to each individual to decide.

  • I would have to agree here that Miss Durbin is definitive .

While I LOVE Miss Powell and her sparkling personality , if you watch her delivery of this piece you will see I think that she is somewhat "showing off " her voice as opposed to "acting " the song .

This NOT meant in any way as a slight of Miss Powell's inarguable talents ! Just my opinion ....

    Thanks for posting !

  • Lovely rendition by Deanna. I've heard Jane Powell's version also but Deanna's is easier on the ears. You might also enjoy hearing Jeanette MacDonald singing Les Filles de Cadiz (from her film MAYTIME). Jeanette's version is more attuned to the sentiment of the song (due to the plot) than Deanna's. In any event, thanks for sharing.

  • This song, Deanna or Jane Powell?

  • Well, since you asked, I'll give my 2 cents. Durbin has perfect intonation whereas Powell is all over the place, but usually sharp. Powell has a really fast vibrato which some may like, but I find annoying. Also, Durbin's voice, though effective through the soprano range, has the richness of a mezzo. Powell's tessitura is placed much higher. Whichever voice is "better" in that sense is a matter of preference.

  • It is always a matter of preference. Having been taught voice courses until the end of my bachelor's degree (Voice/interpretation) I can tell you that I heard a few mezzos, and this sounds nothing like a mezzo, way thinner than a Mezzo. It is still one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard, discovering her today just made my day! She was simply incredible! But she almost sounds coloratura, I don't see how you could say she has mezzo richness...

  • I agree with boswell. Deanna Durbin was not just another child star. The thing thht separated her from others was that she could sing - I mean really really sing. And act!Actually she paved the way for others and Judy Garland, no mean actor herself, acknowleged that.

  • I love this song! I was trying to find which movie it was in, so thank you!!!

  • Legendary jazz singer Mel Torme, who cited Deanna as one of his "Musical Heroines," said of this performance: "The sixteen-year-old diva suddenly attains maturity singing this minor keyed work by Delibes, and you realize in watching her that she is more, much more, than a mere child star. She will go on to better and more fruitful roles." He also marvelled: "Durbin was phenomenal. Possessed of a glorious operatic voice, she could and did sing anything put in front of her to perfection."

  • Thank-you so much. I've been waiting ages for someone to post Deanna's songs from THAT CERTAIN AGE which contains so many of her finest performances like "My Own" & "You're As Pretty As A Picture" to name only a few!
