As for the ? regarding Frank's Christian stance?Pretty much like another Gibson SG playing Italian, who had no time, whatsoever, for the corporate scumbags who paid him,and his band 5k$ for the Cal Jam,when,in actual fact, they made the evening.Forget record industry pricks.Frank knows this.Religious?Maybe just righteous.
I saw Frank In the mid 70's on TV doing a Cal Jam concert. He did Purple Haze and blew me away. Ibought his "LIVE" album the next day.23yrs old and had 4 albums!I was in the Marine Band and wanted to get out and be his bassman in the worst way. Versatile,Revolutionary could play ANY style. like others said truly underrated. other artists creativity stagnate after while but not him!Keep on Rocking Frank!!
I've seen Frank live and its about the closest thing to a religious experience you can get. Friggen awed from the first second , I've been to hundreds of concerts but until you see Frank live , you havvn't seen anything , The man is beyond amazing.
I know Frank , Got to know him years ago from his website and chatroom
Underated is an understatement , He is by far the greatest player on the face of the earth today, nobody can come close , Rock, blues, jazz , speed , accuracy and taste, nobody close to Frank
@vegasshowgirlshoes u cant say that with certainty..since uli jon roth gilmour and mark knopfler are alive and so many other guitarists but hes surely one of the greatest
@BeauEvil..Rushmore sucks dude..and all those Lees ,Vaughns blah blah..Here is a real list of players...Jeff Loomis, Tony MacAlpine Shawn Lane Uli Roth Jason Becker...guys with dexterity /accuracy, feel ,''no one else can play that ''type shit
Now run along back to the sandbox there little feller
My first concert ever back in 77'-78' was Frank Marino/Mahogany Rush opening for Styx on the Grand Illusion tour in Louisville Ky. I'll never forget it.
@cosiogalko Marino was not ''underrated''at all He is an average guitar player =If you like him fine..thats subjective..but he could never play for example song on the level of ''Guitars Still Suck'' by Bumblefoot . He has none of the soul of say,Uli Jon Roth...He doesnt get touted often because he is average
@nneevveerrmmoorree "Average guitar player"? Are you insane, or just trolling? For a better gage than you, check out Johnny Rushmore. Rushmore does EVEERYONE, and does them all well, Hendrix, Winters, Vaughn, King, Roth, Trower, Lee, etc., etc. And, MARINO is about his favorite! You have a tin ear or something.
@nneevveerrmmoorree you can't compare the two. It's like comparing heart surgery with painting a wall. Frank Marino is doing the surgery. He could play the song but why when we all know that type of play (tapping) looks really hard but very easy for most guitarist. Eddie Van halen!
In time your guys may earn the recognition, it takes time and skills.
What a beautiful song by a genius of a guitarist! Thank you, Frank, for yet another gem! If you ever get the chance to see Frank in concert, do it...just do it...and rest up before the show. He will play for 3 hours straight! You will not believe the great show he puts on...Rock and Roll!!!
This a more suave Frank than the full-freak version I saw a couple years earlier. I would love to see some film from the '77 Winterland concert. Total psychedelic mayhem, played like a man possesed. Many shows were filmed by Bill Graham's promotion company there.
Iam sitting in my cabin in remote northern ontario listening to frank marino on you tube via sattelite internet. How freakin cool is that!! Incredible performance by a MAJOR talent.
I seen Mahogany Rush in Lousiville gardens I can't recall what year it was, but Humble Pie, Angel, and Mothers Finest backed them up, my ears rang for 3 days, Loudest Concert I ever been to. Killer Show!!!
Fucking bad ass,"Frank shreds period..Man this is just cool,"just wish it was clearer but what the fuck can you do,From 79" I never heard this one and i love it..It fucking herts somehow", his feel..
Frank is like a vintage Ray Bradbury novel, He can play just the best jazz progression riffs and then when you don't expect it he can nail your azz to the cross , I don't think there has ever been a guitarist with better phrasing , if there is I haven't heard them.
Frank Marino is to rock/blues what Lenny Breau was to jazz. Could this tune be a sort of tribute to fellow Canadian Lenny Breau? Guitarists from the 70's knew FM.

@corm1000 : I agree with you but Frank never made mainstream music. He always went his own way and probably didn´t care what the critics thought about him.
I couldn't agree more. I only discovered Frank & Mahogany a couple days ago, and I'm amazed that, as a big fan of classic rock/metal, I somehow missed this. Simply amazing, and easily right up there with the better known greats.
They just don't make music like this anymore. What a goddamn shame.
I saw him last year on Long Island. Walked onstage at 8pm and didn't leave it until after 11. He basically blew the doors off any guitar player i've ever seen live.

Check out that cosiogalko hendrix performance. Tightest ever with a bloody mosh-pit during voodoo chile. never seen that before. Aces to poppy this is supper good. Man this rocks. Seriously "cosiogalko" check it out.
Frank Marino deserves respect. I am not watching Jimi Hendrix or Jimmy Page. I am watching Frank Marino and I feel as good, If not better then I do watching the obvious choices. Frank Marino has got to be the most underated guitarist, composer and musican from his generation. I see it over and over within his video comments at Youtube and elsewhere. Frank Marino should have as many music awards as any professional guitarist alive. One of the founding fathers of true psycodelic rock.
cosiogalko, hey man I saw your hendrix tribute you blood rip, like steve or such. This Poppy is bloody right-on like you said on one of your posts. Bloody ace man.
Frank Marino was born in Montreal in 1954 of italian and arabic heritage. This song is a great example of a moving land and soundscapes. Although often compared to hendrix this song is a prime example that he's got his own thing going. He play's hendrix songs but then again so did stevie and he had his own thing going too.
I am two years older than Frank, but I wasn't too familiar with his work, though I am a fan of many guitarists. Heard him on XM and was blown away. His melodies are hypnotic. Got the Real Live cd and love it. Sorry I hadn't heard more about him years ago. Will try to see him in concert somewhere this summer. He's the real thing.
people are retarded who say hes the reincarnation of jimi hendrix (i know i spelled that wrong) he was born in 1954...jimi didnt die intill like 15 years later or w/e...how the hell can jimi be reincarnated if hes still alive! lol....hes still mazing though
people usually say that he took the"spirit" of Jimi Hendrix upon himself while on an acid trip... of course, marino puts no stock in this claim (especially since he is a devout Christian), it's just one of those stupid stories that people with no concept of reality and no life make up lol
Here I sit, a happy man in his mid forties, with tears from my past flowing. How is it possable that this person is not on the largest tour of 2008. Clive Davis your missing out on the resurrection of the new millinium. From: Cosio Galko
Go to Frank marino's website. He toured in '06 and '07. I hope he tours again also! I saw him in '06 and he played for over 3 hrs. Still has not lost a step and met with fans and signed autographs for over an hour! He is the nicest guy!
Frank played at the first concert I ever attended, a Day at the Green, in 1975... the line-up had Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, a little known band named AC/DC, Aerosmith and Ted Nugent. Frank stole the show! The other acts were incredible as everyone was at the top of their game, but everyone talked about Frank after the show and how incredible he was...
fckin awesome!!! poppy my favourite tune!!!! man that frank can really make his guitar talk to you he plays with passion somewhat like jimmy hendrix and jimmy page.... keep rockin!!!
I'm no expert on guitars. Don't play one. I just like good music. When I first heard Frank Marino as a teen I knew immediately this guy is fucking phenomenal! His guitar has a killer sound to it.
needs a louder upload, If my tube volume is maxed then my windows should be ratling. can you reload this? see my 100's of videos in my playlists you will see how cranking you should be able to get it
Keppisankari....WHO ARE YOU?!? LOL! Someone else put up an enhanced version of this video less than a month ago. It was on that link that I noticed the comments written in the "About This Video" section. I never noticed it here before, even though I have watched this clip a bazillion times. This is (forever Poppy loving) Lori, by the way. :) THANK YOU for posting this AWESOME video, whoever you are. It will forever be a favorite. :)
Lest I forget, I never saw Frank with his original band- Jimmy Ayoub and Paul Harwood, each outstanding musicians that helped bring Frank's vision to fruition. I saw him with his previous lineup- Ave Ludmer(electric violin/guitar), Dave Goode(drums), and both Peter Dowse and Remi-Jean LeBlanc (bass). These guys are all outstanding players, and collectively with Frank Marino make for one hell of a fine concert!!!
Frank Marino is hands down my favorite guitarist/musician. I've had the honor of seeing Mahogany Rush for the last three years; if I can only see one band again, it would be these guys. I still get serious chills when this man plays- this is the real shit right here! Thanx for the post and recognition for these amazing musicians. -Peace.
Guitar Player strokes all these young, irrelevant guns. Frank Marino is NEVER in Guitar Player! This man still burns it up, tours, supports a family..and hasn't overdosed or used two hands. He plays a 3 single coil SG..now Gibson has a run on one. Frank will get a tribute model once he's gone. He's a legend and a decent dude...and plays nearly 3 hours straight through. What can anyone do fro 3 hours
straight...and straight through? God bless Frank. Give the man some props!
This is fantastic. Besides Franks's stellar guitar work, I have to give kudos to the bass and drums for laying a huge slab of a rythm for Frank to do his thing.
I've seen Frank over a dozen times since 1980, and this has always been my favorite live song. He usually plays it so beautifully I end up crying a little bit. Frank is the prototype guitar hero. P.S. to X031: "Strange Dreams" is the first track on the Juggernaut album released in 1982. (That was a great tour!)
I heard this song years ago on the "King Bisqit" Thought he said "Heart Beat" when he introduced it . so for years I've looked for a copy of "Heart Beat"! Thanks for posting ,great song.
I would love to see Frank do a show with Joe Satriani. Something beyond G3. Like a line up with the artists who did that Tribute Album for Frank a few years ago. This number Poppy, is an instrumental to beat them all. Mystifyingly beautiful.
I remember the first time I got to see Frank & MR - 1/75, opening for Aerosmith. Never heard of MR. I was so blown away that I couldn't even applaud between songs, I was just overcome by the experience. I've been blessed to see them twice since then. This is the best video I've seen of them. Thanks, Keppi. I want a DVD of this show!
I could just never get into Marino. I've heard all of his albums and he always bored the pants off of me. This clip, though, was a pretty nice little jam.
Frank Marino is in the top 5 rock n roll guitarists ever. Frank Marino's playing runs the gamut of everything I love about Guitar music. A true legend!
This is actual muscianship! I wish Canadian rock radio would wake up and play Marino instead of no talent hacks like Sum 41 and Billy Talent. And Marino is a million times better than the Tragically Hip.
Look here kiddies one of the grandfather's of the "JAM BANDS" It looks like Phish, Widespread Panic and moe. have been copying Frank the Master for their enire careers! Nobody since Hendrix has ever done it with more style!!!
Please don't fight about Rush & Mahogany Rush here. They are both excellent bands and come from excellent place called Canada. Both bands are the best in what they do. Period.
The Guess Who, as a band never chose their name for themselves it was something the record company did, The Who knew what happened and that's why they did Shakin' all over, as a kind of joke.
Yo guys, do your homework! Here is what Frank says about the name, right off his website.. "This experience became the basis of everything that I was to do in music, including the name Mahogany Rush, which was a description I would use to describe a certain sensation that I was having on the trip.
You know, I think you're right! Then Rush needed to come up with their own name! That doesn't bode well for Canadian bands' ability to come up with their own names as I think that The Guess Who is from the great white north as well. Hmmm....
Agreed he was cool and talented. My only problem was the name of the band "Mahogany Rush". Same reason I didn't like the name "The Guess Who". If there are already HUGE bands named "Rush" and "The Who", you have to be more creative with your names. That's taking nothing away from the above bands with the less-than-creative-names, they rocked!
But I think Frank Marino had formed Mahogany Rush before Rush had released their debut. Frank's Maxoom was released in 1973 and Rush's self titled in 1974 if I remember right.
Album Juggernaut was everything to me at mid 80´s. During army time I listened only Juggernaut and Metallicas Master of the puppets to ease young mans pain. Still, time to time I´ll choose it and listen. I´ve seen Frank Marino sometimes at mid 80´s in Oulu, Finland.
Kudo's to Frank Marino! Excellent video. Best night of our lives was when our band, REDSHIFT opened for Frank last year at Chicago City Limits concert. Poppy is one of my favorite Maraino songs.
Wow! Thank the evil 'G'word for YT. To actually see The Man! perform Poppy live - it is truly a gift to all man kind. I don't care for hippies too much, but sweet sweet music is something hippies did so well.
I saw him at a bar in Ottawa , Canada in 1990 or 91 . Best guitar performance I've ever seen . I can't think of a close second . "I'm A King Bee Baby/ Back Door Man" medley was the highlight. Rik Emmit , Jeff Healey , Alex Lifeson , Bruce Cockburn etc etc . Canada has produced some gooduns .
Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush are touring the USA! Check his myspace music site for concert dates- I've got tickets for Oct. 28th in Mobile, AL...Can't wait to hear this song LIVE!
Poppy can be found from Double Live (1988), which was also remastered just recently and includes also a bonus track. You can purchase it for example at Frank's homesite http://www.mahoganyrush.com
Great clip. What album was "Poppy" on? I remember rockin' out to Frank & MR in the 70's. Loved the album "Strange Universe" among others he did. He played a small venue last year here in Indy but I missed it. Never got to hear him live.
Oh this is great stuff, from one of rock's greatest. Would love to see more like this. Isn't it a shame that Frank never got the props he deserved from the general populace? But I guess his unwillingness to compromise or dilute his art is part of what makes his art so great.
Hippies, cool!

Frank Marino should have as many music awards as any professional guitarist alive. One of the founding fathers of true psycodelic rock.

He's the real thing.

people are retarded who say hes the reincarnation of jimi hendrix (i know i spelled that wrong) he was born in 1954...jimi didnt die intill like 15 years later or w/e...how the hell can jimi be reincarnated if hes still alive! lol....hes still mazing though
jongib369 3 years ago
people usually say that he took the"spirit" of Jimi Hendrix upon himself while on an acid trip... of course, marino puts no stock in this claim (especially since he is a devout Christian), it's just one of those stupid stories that people with no concept of reality and no life make up lol

Nothing like a Christian guitarist on an acid trip. Poppy rules. ;)

Go to Frank marino's website. He toured in '06 and '07. I hope he tours again also! I saw him in '06 and he played for over 3 hrs. Still has not lost a step and met with fans and signed autographs for over an hour! He is the nicest guy!

Yes, Frank is the real deal! I saw them in '05,'06, and '07. Met the band on those last two shows- awesome shows and the coolest people!

I'm no expert on guitars. Don't play one. I just like good music. When I first heard Frank Marino as a teen I knew immediately this guy is fucking phenomenal! His guitar has a killer sound to it.

The best guitarist ever...just too bad the upward movement of his band did not get too much exposure. This is MR. Power of Rock 'n' Roll!
I like his Purple Haze and Johnny B. Goode too!
echoNpapa 4 years ago
Lest I forget, I never saw Frank with his original band- Jimmy Ayoub and Paul Harwood, each outstanding musicians that helped bring Frank's vision to fruition. I saw him with his previous lineup- Ave Ludmer(electric violin/guitar), Dave Goode(drums), and both Peter Dowse and Remi-Jean LeBlanc (bass). These guys are all outstanding players, and collectively with Frank Marino make for one hell of a fine concert!!!
dieselboy64 4 years ago

Please don't fight about Rush & Mahogany Rush here. They are both excellent bands and come from excellent place called Canada. Both bands are the best in what they do. Period.

Agreed. As they have different styles, it is merely a matter of taste whether you prefer Rush or Mahogany Rush.

You want to see the best guitarist - bar none - who ever strapped on a guitar - see Frank.

The Guess Who, as a band never chose their name for themselves it was something the record company did, The Who knew what happened and that's why they did Shakin' all over, as a kind of joke.

Does anyone have "Somethings Coming Our Way", Frank stated that was his favorite solo. Mine too.
lilevo8 4 years ago
Yo guys, do your homework! Here is what Frank says about the name, right off his website.. "This experience became the basis of everything that I was to do in music, including the name Mahogany Rush, which was a description I would use to describe a certain sensation that I was having on the trip.
kennyplay 5 years ago
Cool! Do you have the address to his site???
oravattnet 5 years ago
You know, I think you're right! Then Rush needed to come up with their own name! That doesn't bode well for Canadian bands' ability to come up with their own names as I think that The Guess Who is from the great white north as well. Hmmm....
pedgewater 5 years ago
Agreed he was cool and talented. My only problem was the name of the band "Mahogany Rush". Same reason I didn't like the name "The Guess Who". If there are already HUGE bands named "Rush" and "The Who", you have to be more creative with your names. That's taking nothing away from the above bands with the less-than-creative-names, they rocked!
pedgewater 5 years ago
But I think Frank Marino had formed Mahogany Rush before Rush had released their debut. Frank's Maxoom was released in 1973 and Rush's self titled in 1974 if I remember right.

Album Juggernaut was everything to me at mid 80´s. During army time I listened only Juggernaut and Metallicas Master of the puppets to ease young mans pain. Still, time to time I´ll choose it and listen. I´ve seen Frank Marino sometimes at mid 80´s in Oulu, Finland.

Oh this is great stuff, from one of rock's greatest. Would love to see more like this. Isn't it a shame that Frank never got the props he deserved from the general populace? But I guess his unwillingness to compromise or dilute his art is part of what makes his art so great.
