consider this, a car weighs roughly 2 tons or more, and a man weighs several times as much as a child of that age (I'd guess 4-5 times as much given his size). assuming that the car was stopped before it actually ran either of them over, such that all they received was the force of the impact itself, Jason was screwed no matter which way he was held. [too big for 1 post, continuing in part 2]

[part 2] If held towards the car, the force of the impact having to go through Jason's body and then into Ethan's body in order to move them would have likely killed him due to Ethan essentially squishing Jason for that split second while the force transfers. With Ethan being struck first while holding Jason in front of him, the force would propel them slightly forward causing Ethan to crush Jason with his own body weight combined with the force of the car propelling them.

[part 3] In all likelihood, Jason would have survived the impact had Ethan never intervened. Assuming the driver didn't actually run over him, but merely struck him, you're looking at a young boy having his hip and possibly legs fracturing or breaking along with the force of his head hitting the ground. While he could have certainly died that way, he would have had a much better chance of living. Ethan should instead have pushed Jason out of the way instead of grabbing him.
