Tasteful and timeless playing ... consider the era dn the way this stands up ... when the backing horns come in it is immediately 'dated' ... but what Cat Anderson plays is very hip and modern ... 3.09 3.11 plays diminished lines. This guy had it all ... could not be classed as 'just a high note player'.
I finally saw the dvd, but the dvd was called "The Intimate Duke Ellington" and this song is called "Tippin' and whisperin' ". It was two rarely seen performances filmed in 1967 for Danish television that feature Duke Ellington jamming with his band and performing some of his most loved songs on piano.
the dvd is called Duke Ellington Live at Tivoli Gardens and the music is unbelivable, simple image yet filled with feeling and taste, great musicians.
I guess it's just an ad-lib blues. Never heard Cat play so taken back, playing so Milesish. When I was in London 20 years ago I had in hand Cat Abderson's "exercise-book". There were advices like: play this one 5 minutes in a row or another exercise should be played 10 minutes etc. Well, I think it would have killed me then. So I didn't purchase it. I perhaps could need it now.
All the trumpeters of which you guys speak are Great! All Great! That's what counts not who was better ! Grow up and go practice maybe then you might, just might get a gig!
Cat never got enuff credit. Listen to the Cootie in him--far more than a screech specialist. The guys in the band called him a kleptomanica. Jealousy, maybe.
I came across to this video and to Cat Anderson by chance a month ago, when I Bought on a supermarket a DVD called "Duke Ellington-soft and Gentle" for 4 Euros.
He,s fabulous and so are Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney and Paul Gonsalves.
Hi, I like your video and have rated it as awesome. Please check out my vid clip of some rare jazz musicians and dance band Leaders cigarette cards, issued in 1936. They include Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington and many more.
Fantastic! Cat was phenomenal, and capable of great, expressive playing on Earth as well as up on top of the stratosphere. Superb bass from a very young John Lamb. Thanks for posting this.

I assume you don't fully understand the feeling that comes with playing the blues. If that's what he's feeling, then that's what he plays.

OK,I give up. I should know this as I'm a diehard Ellington fan, but I can't remember the name of this tune. Can somebody help me out here?
tyoonz 4 years ago
it may have been just a blues that cat wanted to solo over
it is pretty basic albeit extremely well performed.
haraldtheman 4 years ago
Even though he didn't have enough credit, man we still can find him doing the impossible that any trumpeter can't do
smoothbv 4 years ago
That intro to the song by Duke was cool... and was that him playing saxsaphone at one point in there?
makujafu 4 years ago
No, that wasn't Duke on saxophone, but he was doing some deliciously tasteful piano work! As always!
tyoonz 4 years ago
That was Johnny Hodges on alto sax and Harry Carney on baritone; two Ellington perennials.
