mmm Apple has a faster development refinement process, i took microsoft over ten years to develop this. i used the first surfaces it was very laggy so hopefully this is better. as for the apple vs ms fan boy comment lol, people are always scared of what they dont under stand and will have ignorant views from either party. sit on the fence and use the best of both worlds.
@badsaddamdotnet well not really. apple releases things faster than most of its competitors, but they still refine and improve their devices each year.
microsoft on the other hand, releases stuff every few years, so they don't seem to be improving as much, but in actuality, they are improving every so often, to about the same level apple, every release. they just improve more in more time.
@rivengle yeah i know what you mean. Apples touch screen devices have been in the market 4/5 odd years now M$ is still developing similar technologies that apple has today. and yes i know apple drip feed their tech releases and surfaces 2 will be much much more successful than the first generation. as a user of both products id like to see M$ do well..
@iamtomalmond did you just use an acronym to imply superior intelligence? lol, No Microsoft has developed their product for a different form factor and market therefore not implying that apple has any product like this in anyway i only referenced them as a developer of similar technologies utilized in different, yet similar ways.
They key difference between Surface 2 and Surface 1, as well as other object recognizing tables is that the LCD itself acts as the camera. This is also different from capacitive LCD displays, which cannnot see and thus cannot use unique objects/tags.So, Surface is very unique in that it's thin as well as responds to objects. The purpose of the table is around multi-user interaction and thus the larger size.
@TooMuchForIt Yes, it is a LCD technology what is just improved little bit further by multiple other companies than Microsoft. Microsoft has licensed technologies for that as well. These screens were already in use as well in CES'11 and visitors could use it. In japan those are already a success and been in use long time as in europe.
A very interesting technology for the Microsoft Surface. Hope this opens a new and interesting way to interact to games (think of Kinect) Create your avatar in 3D instantly just "Turn around to scan your avatar". Hope a few CES more in the future we will see something like this.
Technology has no frontiers... even more than 30 years ago they invented something that went where no person has ever been before...
Smarter Person: "Awesome idea. But Apple would have made it better, prettier, more affordable, and more compatible with other media and devices. And marketed it better."
@bip01 Are you kidding me? In case you didn't notice, I already said "more affordable". I promise you Apple's will be 1/5 of the price, if not less. Apple's prices are pretty cheap for everything their products can do and how well they can do them. Apple is just plain better, in every way. They never crash, they're easy to use, very versatile, and they just look better.
@Gregavision I'll tell my iPod, the next time it crashes. And Trust me, I have seen Apple-Products crash.
Well, I don't know the prices for the USA. In Europe, the prices are too high. For the price of a MacBook Pro you can buy at least two or three Windows-Notebooks with similar specifications.
@videogamer54 Yeah I wonder were "the whole Microsoft Sucks" thing comes from...uh reality, maybe. I use both OSX, iOS, Andriod, and Windows 7. And my brand new Samsung RF711 laptop that runs Windows 7 has crashed 4 times in the First week that I've had. Surface looks really cool. But the complaints about Microsoft usually come from experiance!!
@MarleyNicholeTravis Something must be wrong with my old Dell then, had it since 2001 only crashed TWICE and it was because i used heavy software i didn't have the hardware for. A computer doesn't only crash because of the operating system and Microsoft is not responsible for SAMSUNG's products. I recently bought a brand new ASUS running Win 7, no problems and it's been a year now. i've never seen anyone have that much of an issue with a PC before unless they were technologically handicapped.
YEAH, only another 8 years until microsoft dev team finally releases it to consumers. WHY are they so slow at this stuff, they demo it, everyone else releases it cheaper with better features, 2 years later msft complains no one is buying their 2years late product.
Also not a whole lot new at CES, its all just re-makes of the same thing, +gb/ghz/wifi here, slimmer there, lighter here, increase price, 1work day 2make copy/paste delay 4months, hype as new/original, rinse & repeat next year.
@JeffreyQuadra There is not a single device out there remotely similar to surface. The power of surface is not just "multi touch". Firstly, it's "massive multi-touch" and secondly, it's actually aware of everything you do on the table, including material objects placed on it. It takes a long time because this thing is the result of a decade of R&D. The costs of that R&D were monumental. They simply are unable to release it for a price in consumer range at this point. 3.0 will be different.
It's not that impressive anymore as it's more like a huge tablet, which exist everywhere today. The most interesting ting is the interaction with physical objects which can be used as some kind of id when you want to see and manipulate various content.
Why this is something new as there was on CES'11 already in use for visitors a MultiTouch companys own touch walls and tables for twitter use with same technology?
@JacobMillaKilla Well, the finnish touch screen can recognize paper, apply even a OCR to the text what is on the paper and so on. Same kind idea and basic technology. Maybe the difference is small but basic functions are same.
@JacobMillaKilla Well, the finnish touch screen can recognize paper, apply even a OCR to the text what is on the paper and so on. Same kind idea and basic technology. Maybe the difference is small but basic functions are same.
@TheFri13 Surface uses PixelSense. A technology developped by microsoft and not found anywhere else. Surface is NOT "just" a touch device. It's massive multitouch with object recognition. It's the only device in its kind.
@ScientificBob "It's the only device in its kind." Can you explain why there are already huge "Surface" tablets and walls what has object recognition and they are not from Microsoft? They are sold and placed to different countries to museums, hotels, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, car sales, engineers, hospitals.... And why Microsoft has licensed such existing technology for Surface 2? I have used a year ago a 52" inch table (were only a 15cm thigh) and it recognized bar stuff or credit cards.
@ScientificBob multitouch.fi as first example to give you a start. There are as well lots of videos in youtube using those tables where you can just place your flyer or gift card and table recognizes the text and codes printed on them.
@ScientificBob And do you remember when Microsoft presented first Surface 2007? Such technology was already in public use in Finland citywall.org (late 2006) and it toke 'helsinki', 'citywall' or 'cwhki' tagged photos, videos and messages from social media (like youtube and flicrk) to be shown and manager in the wall. First MS surface tablet was placed for public April 2008 by AT&T. And while after that multitouch, object recognized capabilities, thin tablets has been sold around the world.
Meanwhile in Africa....
