  • I remember this band from high school. ha ha ha. Cool. Bookmarked.

  • If I had seen this interview when it was broadcast, I'd have thought Jim was a complete dick!

Thankfully I was already a fan and (anyway) I missed this episode of The Tube.

    Thanks for uploading it.

  • fetus

  • Mike patton and everyone else owe sooo much to this man

  • "The Quincy Jones of the avant-garde" Gotta love it.

  • This is like tom waits mixed with all of the 80s

  • pearls for the swines

  • huh?

  • That's Muriel Gray doing the interview. She ain't being negative she would have probably been the one who invited him onto the show, she was very well informed. If you step back you will see that the two of them know what a staged set-up this interview is, so they are both playing along with a kind of charade. The tube was a lot like that, kind of arch ironic sarkiness where it was putting on bands enjoyed by an older audience, but in the schoolkids hour. It went out at 5.30 in the evening.

  • There's a real The The sound to this performance!

  • Well I'm playing the guitar with my feets, in a old technique from india, and bumping the piano with my cock. I'll fuck something later. Wait my new material.

    Fuck all !

    Peace

  • Now I have a kid, his name it's Brian, well he was borned fucking ugly. Damn my was real fucking mess. jaja... Butt Hey ¿What can i do? i like drugs.

Yeah my kiid was... I'm a father, I need to love him. Time changes, hie wear tits, and kiss his cock, Marilyn Manson. what a fucking name man, It's weird, also Butthole Surfers, funny people... Goodfellas.

  • Hi! My name is Jimy, and I live with my parents, and I feel very sad.

Well, like I said, I live with my "D" and my "M". My daddy it's a mess, I hate him. His friends call him Iggy, well he is a fucking cunt. My mom... Well she died long time ago, and I don't know much about her, well apparentley she loved the banana, and also to some of her friend. They were call "The velvet underground". Nice music. Well that it's life, her name was Andy Warhol.

  • loved dancing to this at the City Nightclub in the freak room in the 80s. (in all of the City's locations)

    Foetus RULES.

  • How much you wanna bet Jim offended blondie pre-interview?

  • >>>>>>>>>>>>>> ge gE !

  • Another "X Factor" candidate, methinks. Certainly conveys a lot of presence for someone singing along to a prerecorded backing track.

  • "a woman's place is on my face"

  • Yank em cank em dont stick around to thank em!

  • i saw this video at helter skelter in 1988....great meories

  • Very fond memories of Helter Skelter '88-'89. I miss the whole atmosphere of the era, but that would include my young state of mind and how it processed everything at the time. It's nice to get a taste...

  • Ambition can seem like pretention, but it least it's better than bland conformity.

  • His jestures resemble shane mcgowan in this vid

  • pretentious? he keeps it pretty humble imo, considering his musical genius

  • I remember watching this in '85, first time I'd heard of Jim Thirlwell/Foetus, pretty good to say it's just him and a backing tape. Interesting guy and very underrated, even today.

  • He he he really funny to watch when an artist does not fit into the standard Q&A format of television.

  • RAD!

  • pretty still audience.

pretty awesome musician. you gotta love scraping foetus off the wheel...

  • They were probably there to listen to Soft Cell... Maybe Jim was a little to "out there" for them. This video made me feel like I was a kid again - Awesome find!!!!!!!

  • Although, on second thought, the large woman in the back seems pretty eager to take Jim up on his "offer".

  • Is the entire audience on ludes or something?

  • yeah, i don't understand art either =P

  • Some of THE best music I have ever enjoyed!

  • ...Quincy Jones of the avant-garde!

  • Viva Foetus!

  • My goodness, how many times in the past roughly 20 years have I quoted "Purgutory disguised as a room with a view" to people who have no idea where I swiped it from? Priceless.

  • I always announce a hangover by telling people it's "another hungover morning in the bottom of the black lagoon". I think this means my hangovers are way more industrial than anyone else's. Ouch.

  • Slick! I like!

  • feto es chechi y ya!

  • WOW! As much as I love his music and art, he really SUCKS in interviews. But then so do I so if nothing else I totally identify with him.

He prolly should have done the whole interview in character, with his american growly Clint voice. "Listeaown, babeh, I gat got one ... grrrhhmmmnnn .. if you got the oven, you know what ahm talkinnnn' bout? Humnnnn?"

MOAR VENTURE! MOAR FOETUS! MOAR CORN!

  • "Muriel, a woman's place is on my face." LOL

  • I grew up in Camden Town during the eighties and it was a right dump. Flyposting was rife over the numerous boarded up shops. This name was one of the most notable of all the disturbing bands advertised. At last I know what they sound like. My Mum wouldn't let us dwell in Inverness Street because she thought the poster was so disgusting. lmfao

  • It's still a dump. But now it's full of all the junkies and prostitutes that were swept up in the Kings Cross renovation project.

  • I've still got a giant poster for the "Hole" album, the crucifiction poster. A bit tatty round the edges unfortunately. Had it on my wall for years.

  • "well *takes off shades* basically muriel, a woman's place is on my face." LOL! that's awesome.

  • Foetus is amazing but the whole schtick just wouldn't work if people weren't so easily pissed off by him.

  • People get pissed at JG Thirlwell? I can't see that.

  • Well, the woman interviewing him didn't seem to impressed...

What's with all the thumbs down btw?

  • Yea, a bit of sarcasm in my post. I'm sure he wasn't impressed by that twit either.

  • Sorry...internet asperger's...*goes back to drawing circles in MS paint*

  • pure genius

    life changing music

  • Never seen it before and I can say that is some great foetus!! :)

  • Damn hot shit! Long live 80's!

  • yes it was the first album I bought just based on the cover art and what a wonderful trip it has been............NAIL an Opera his epilouge ....

  • sure, it was nail.. thirwell's masterpiece

  • It was on Nail not Hole, the intro track is Theme From Pigdom Come and the live track is Descent Into The Inferno.

  • the album was called "Hole"

  • what album was this on? i worked in record shops for years and never managed to find it.

can't even find it to download. anyone know?

  • Scottish she is/Was...Who cares?F...ing Terry Christian was an abomination of the human race, and he was born in England?...(No Pride here, line of bastards!)....Thirwell is incredible!

  • No point in saying anyhthing then ??????

  • Hi grumpyyyy,

Curious now. What was your point?

  • A combination of alchohol,Zopiclone and Bad eyesight. and I wanted to Vent against Terry Christian for some reason.sorry.

  • yep, sorry to say, muriel gray is indeed scottish. she lived at the top end of leith walk for a while. used to see her knockin' about. smarmy cow!

  • I lol'd at the Bedrock lyrics.

  • I lol'd at the Bedrock lyrics.

  • This is one of my favorite albums of all time..

  • can't believe i've found it at last. like raindog70 i saw it when first aired. my mate taped it on betamax so we watched a few times then it was lost to the advance of vhs. one of the best tube performances ever. thanks for putting this on. i've been waiting 23 years.

  • I can't believe that the interviewer lady didn't want to be on JGT's face. How rude.

  • sex

  • Thirwell is a genius.

  • Thirwell started out singing to nothing more than backing tapes for his live shows for Foetus.

  • he plays instruments. I don't know why he says he doesn't here.

  • Foetus is great, very artistic and a real musician even if he doesn't play any recognized instruments.

  • Absolutely fantastic, one of my favourite songs ever, haven't seen this since it was first aired. I was about 14, I instantly became a fan, and have just started recollecting his work on the reissued cds. Thanks edwardiii, brings back great memories.

  • LOL, I saw these guys in 1985 at Sheffield Uni, along with "Kissing the Pink", wow... this brings back loads memories...

  • omg that was the best live performance & song on this sweet Earth.

that is my all time favorite song i Know all the words but not the name of the song.

  • "descent into the inferno", if my memory serves me. anyone know what he's up to these days?

  • I think he's performing in London as Manorexia at the moment.

  • One of my all-time favorite artists! If I were ever to make a movie, Foetus would be in the soundtrack! I love how he uses strings and how they blend and carry the songs to other levels.

  • Anti-religious? Anti-feminist? Funny, I've never heard Jim come out with political stuff.

O, she interprets that way because she has a paranoid worldview, that's it.

  • Totally agree,

But isn't all anti stuff mentioned in "couched" vocabulary ???? Or maybe it's because she is Scottish ??? (we always find ways to feel "put down")

  • Typical Scottish humour (nobody gets it!!!)

  • Comment removed

  • Scottish eh?

  • Yes,

Why? What nationality did you think Muriel Gray was?

  • after years of just noticing the great album covers (but never hearing the music)...I am very impressed and can see why the music is so influential. great performance.

  • glorious

  • wonderful - its amazing that great art like that gets made at all when even those presenting it appear to be attacking it, who needs Maggie Thatcher when you've got Muriel Grey..

  • esta buenisimo, quiero conseguir la musica de FOETUS !!!! industrial puro.

  • yea Kay it was a show on channel 4 called the tube over here in the uk

  • fucking nice i love scraping foetus off the wheel!!!! nice shot

  • jim is the coolest, i've seen him a lot, hung out with him a bit back in the day (early 90s). havent seen him in years tho, but i keep up with his new music on his website and such.

Great clip but tv crowd is kinda lame...nothing like the Sound Factory concerts I remember, those were intense.

  • does anyone know where this is from? tv show or something?

  • its from the tube from feb 1985 , i was in the crowd..!!! marc almond was also on the show and the monochrome set

  • I attended the Sound Factory shows in the early 90s too--they were great!

  • Shame about Manurial Grey - silly cow.

  • I saw Foetus once. He didn't do this song. Thank you for posting my favorite Foetus song.

  • Long live Thirlwell, but fuck you guys dissing Trent... I know, his shit sucks these days, but when was the last time you threw "Broken" in your stereo? Go seek out the EP "Fixed" that followed thereafter, there is some truly golden "industrial" collaboration from the two of them... "Screaming Slave" is the breach crack baby of Foetus and NIN

  • How dare you bring up Fixed and not discuss the Coil remix of Gave Up? >:O

  • I KNOW... The first time I heard that, my shit was turned up WAY too loud and when the fucked up vocals kicked in, I about had a stroke.

  • what a great video.FOETUS!!!! this is industrial not NIN

  • NIN cant do industrial for shit on this guy eh

  • trent should go hang himself...no that would be playing into his sad agenda...he should live and be a miserable shit

  • Hahaha, he even coined the best and most famous one, "A woman's place is on my face!", I love how he follows his own advice religiously: he says what he means and says it mean. Great provacative legendary dude, his life & works should be in the national curriculum as of year 7 i reckon.

  • Wow man...actually seeing Jim coin one of his classic phrases "Eat my fire, I'm the new Messiah" sent hisvers down my spine. This is gonna sound a bit elitist but it's very true: 90% of people my age (17-18) wouldn't recognise this guy. Thanks for posting the vid :D

  • thanks a lot.

gets me 20 years old back whan i was 16.

    such a good record NAILS

  • Muriel really does herself no favours here. The Tube should have gotten Jim interviewed by Paula or Jools, not the understudy.

I was present when Muriel, as Rector of Edinburgh Uni, was reduced to tears by the then President of EUSA. If anyone expresses any interest, I'll repeat the joke that did it ...

  • Please do share that - she deserves a kicking for this interview - having a pop at image when she is sitting there fluffed up like a peacock trying to be right on - on telly. He should stop doing interviews though - his music is awesome to the power of many. not even he can compete in words

  • Yeah, I'm up for a laugh at that bint's expense, go for it!

  • Being a student of a few Scottish Uni's (honest and 43 YO)Please tell me the joke?

  • Yes please.

  • I saw Foetus playing in a pizzeria in Lund (Sweden) back in '89. He broke his microphone by hitting me in the head with it very hard. :-)

  • feed us more Foetus!

  • Great Foetus.

  • don't suppose you've got diary of a sick man? heard that in 85 and it stuck out like a message from the underground

  • I remember running home from school to watch this, but I wasn't allowed to watch it. I'd just read Lord Of The Flies and bought Nail with the included poster of the pigs head, which was up on my wall in no time...So may thanks for posting it 20 years on!!I don't know why he didn't slap Muriel-winging-bitch face...she was soooo up her own pretentious pseudo feminist a**! Paula Yates and Jools ruled...thanks Channel 4!

  • my favorite

  • I vividly remember watching this when it was first broadcast - it stood out among the total dross they inflicted on us most of the time - and the muriel interview is still as stomach-clenchingly embarrassing as it was back then! Thanks for posting it.

  • Haha. She's disgusted, the fat lady in the back seems quite interested though. . .baaahahaha.

  • Muriel's a real dingbat, isn't she?

  • Wow, Nail was the first Foetus album I bought and still play it today. Thanks for sharing this!

  • Nail was the first Foetus album I bought also. I bought it without having ever heard him, I just loved the cover. Jesus Christ! I did not think he would turn out to be one of the greatest musicians of all time!

  • thanks posting!!!!!!

  • This is an amazing bit of history. edwardiii, please let us know before you take it offline, if you ever do! I was privledged to make a bootleg vid of his last Portland Oregon appearance- that show was AWESOME. He's really nice in person..

  • WOW this is incredible!

  • Wow. It's amazing to see what Thirwell looked like 20 years ago. (Rather hot!) I do wonder what they gassed the audience with, they looked like zombies. It's a great song.

  • actually, I think he looks much hotter now!

  • Awesome! Saw him in boston a long time ago. Was I ever surprised that such a scary voice came out of such a little guy.

  • Vintage Foetus.

  • thank you thank you thank you

    did i mention thank you?

  • Foetus is better with a live band. The songs have more impact. Last time I saw him at The Mercury Lounge in NYC they played "Throne of Agony" and it was awesome.

  • this must be in the days Jim lived in London.

  • Fantastic. Further proof that Jim Thirlwell was, and still is, ahead of his time. Did you get a load of that audience? They looked like they were watching an abortion.

  • great!

i think he had smoked some weed, that's why he had no problem with performing.

  • Classic JG Thirlwell = *****

    This old footage is great!

  • Brilliant! How the hell does he manage to perform in front of the stiffest audience in England?

  • where the hell did you find this?

  • videos like this are the reason i spend so much time on youtube...god i wish i could see foetus live (or better yet, the immaculate consumptives...)

  • man i would die to see "the immaculate Consumptives" they only did like 4 shows so many stories you hear about marc almod and nick cave all strung out on heroin and the great story of marc and foetus smashing enos piano lol. see foetus live about 5 times he is amazing live with members of swans as the back up band.
