I'm from Chile and my dad told me he used to read our letters and hear our tapes we sent him when he was in Germany when I was a little boy and he told me he always cried when did it, now, whenever I listen to this song I imagine him crying and I cry along with him...
As a young woman in the early days of disco, I was a fan of a young Pat Metheny. My friends didn't understand and used to say, "Pat who?" No scandals, no meat dresses, no arriving to the Grammy's in an egg, because there is no need for ridiculous hype. He's just a talented guy who plays incredibly good music, surrounding himself with equally good musicians all combined to make a marvelous melody. He hasn't allowed his record label to destroy him.
Just more proof that , as Brian Wilson said, "Music is the Voice of God". Beautiful! I always seem to go back to 'Letter From Home' and 'Tell Her You Saw Me". It just touches your soul and melts your heart. Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays have always had the gift of creating beauty in music that places you in a certain place at a certain time in life.

Un brano che ti percorre l'anima, ti percorre la schiena con un brivido. Un'emozione pura. Poche cose ti danno una sensazione così. Grazie Pat. Grazie a tutti i musicisti.
@kahlil23 If only we could have gotten LAGQ to actually play at our wedding... though I'd hate to see how much that would have cost. ::shudders:: You too, sir, have good taste. Was it your idea or hers to use "Letter" at your wedding? In our case, it was her idea, but I kinda nudged her towards it with "You know, how about THIS song..."
@bigandtallreturn you know, it's funny but we were listening to CD's of jazzers and the like and came upon an old Metheny CD I had or something. We listened to the first 7 seconds of each song and the moment Letters started we knew we had our song. So it was definitely both our choices. It really is a great song for a bride to enter a wedding to.
This song keeps pulling me to listen to it. I love how simply moving its many tones and colours are. Thank you so much for sharing this. I hope to find this concert on DVD.
Ahh ! It's easy to make a song called war, well, just take some 'metal pans' (kinda simulation of solders helmets) and hit them and record that genrated song, add some screaming, and we're done.
To make song called 'Letter from home', that's not easy.
This was the last sound at my wife's funeral. Although I no longer cry when I hear it I still envision her spirit rising along with the notes at the finale of this.
@luchesse626 Wow, powerful words and I only hope that I find a piece of music that will give me such wonderful pictures if my man is called up before me....
I wish you peace especially at this time of the year.
I have no words good enough to describe how I feel listenning or playing this tune...amazing is saying so lil'... and of course you had my positive vote,as well!!!
I have heard a lot of musicians talking about how it feels while touring, it is wonderful because you get to be in so many places sharing your music, but remember you are away from your home, your family and loved ones, thats hard. I think this tune portrays that feeling so well..thanks for the upload
i wonder, can this thinking a person to create such works, make you feel free, at peace, transport you to place of quientess, congralations Pat are wonderl, i hpe new, never stop suprising
This is so perfectly beautiful. It amazes me that our humanity is been brought down to who looks cool, or who comes out in a space looking egg to entertain us. This isn't over the top of ANYONES head. No matter who you are, this music is just perfect.
There is only one problem w/this song.....IT IS TOO SHORT.......Pat Metheny creates sooo much beautiful music, but this piece truly exceeds all expectations.......simply beautiful....I hope to meet Pat one day and tell him thank you for "Letter From Home" This is piece of music always makes me think and makes me feel good.
This is one of the greatest songs I've never heard! Pat and Mays have built an incredible and solid group based on solidarity and fraternity! That's honest love, and consequently, the Music is a truth on their hands!
This song takes me away - dissolves the problems of my day, returns my childhood, long Summer days and the innocence of doing nothing. Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing your gift Pat. (Thank you Jon for bringing this to me).
This song is almost beyond words. Like being whisked away to a foggy Walden Pond, or being alone for the first time at overnight camp as a young kid where I would look in amazement at the stars whence surrounded by the tall conifers in Maine ... And like the stars, this is timeless, too: A brilliant mixture of organic emotions that run deep; deeper then we normally care to know. It's a nice, yet very serious reminder that we are here together but for only a short while. Let's try to enjoy it.
@CuteePie83 One of the most beautiful comments I ever read if not THE MOST BEAUTIFUL, appreciating the musical experience called PAT METHENY, a true musician larger than life! Thank you for conveying truth in your words! Deeply touched,
@CuteePie83 I can only tell you that I was meant to come across your comment. @adamemanuel sorry for the language, but are you fucking retarded? seriously? wow... and i guess you're right... this isn't a song... this is a masterpiece, and a brilliant composition.
You are quite literally a moron if you think that. This is one of the most well written and beautiful songs ever written by one of the best musicians, honestly, to ever live on this planet. It's a work of inspiration; you don't get that from pop tunes on the radio.
@MattLikesMusic27 wow, pat's music makes such an aggression? peace man and stop your vulgar language. what I think is mine, I have right to comment what I want. I don't write about value of this composition, I write about classification - this is NOT a song. So hard to understand? EOT.
A song is music, and music is (more or less) expression through sound. Ergo, any instrument/voice can be used - it can still be classed as a song, to some extent. I listen to everything from Waking The Cadaver to Metheny to Bonobo to Saosin etc., and they all make fantastic songs - with or without certain whatevers in their music.
Music is also subject to opinion; one man's meat is another man's poison. But you can't seriously say this isn't a song? It is, and an amazing one at that :)
Thank you so much for your gentle and touching words flowing strictly from the heart. Greetings from Poland. We Polish love Pat Metheny as a one of most gifted musicians of all times.
it is a sad thing that today, this kind of perfection and virtuosity is not as recognized as it was earlier. look at all the chart hits, almost everything is done by computers, even the voices are often generated and improved by technology. I would not say that all charts are bad music, i listen to some of them too, but i prefer "real" music and everyone, who plays his intrument with feeling, love and virtuosity, is my hero.
ah,but it IS coming back.recording studios are being asked more and more to produce acoustic sound. there is not a piece of music written in all time that can be played with a metronome completely in the past or reproduced by algorythms for digital songs. The love and heart and soul of of music is beyond that.
Metheny come in questa canzone con un "titolo" e "i suoni" evoca momenti e d emozioni della vita che chi è stato lontno da casa , dai suoi amici, dai suoi affetti , comprende e coglie in un attimo.,
My husband and I would play this song to our unborn daughter almost 20 years ago. Now, she will be walking down the aisle on her wedding day to this song. It reminds me of the journey of her precious life....

I love this video - particularly how silent and attentive the audience is, and the shot of the equipment scattered around the ground. It feels like it was a completely random moment that everybody caught in time. Just magical.
Came across this by mistake while I was looking for something else and I am absolutely in love with this. Soooo beautiful. This music evokes such emotion!

Say amen,somebody.

@LighterMan98 Nice song, but sounds like she's living in your shadow if not your Birkenstocks. Let the poor thing have her own life.

I love this video - particularly how silent and attentive the audience is, and the shot of the equipment scattered around the ground. It feels like it was a completely random moment that everybody caught in time. Just magical.

Don't concern yourself with PM's technique - Pat himself described his hands as a "bunch of bananas". Just listen: the music is just undeniable....
