When you start getting up to the Bigger displacement small blocks the "Side load" that the larger stroke cranks create for the Cyl walls makes em not to practicle for street use , at least My feelings ...like the 421, 434 and even the 454 small blocks So for Me I'd stick with nothing bigger than 415 for street & strip use ....I don't want a street car who's motor I have to Gut every season .
Nice man. I've got a 79 camaro 2 bolt main that I'm doing a 388 on, already got it bored .060 over. looking at voodoo cam, .500 lift and some ported vortec heads, top it off with an edelbrock manifold and 2 holley double pumpers and I'll be in business!
My 350 would give that a run for it's money though. It was hand built by someone who can 'hear' the inside of an engine through a wooden stake and use it to diagnose problems, like a stethoscope to a heartbeat.
very nice motor, super clean. Im almost done with my 388, exact to yours only 6.0 rods, went w/ iron heads w/ 5 angle valve job for nitrous. We are using a .600 lift n2o cam. How big is the lift on yours?
why not use a forged crank? What if he wants to go boosted one day? Then he would have to tear down the whole engine and waste a whole shit load of money on another crank, gaskets, bearings ect... do it right first time. Its exaclty what this guy did.
I have a 388 stroker .60 over 400 scat crank flat top pistons 640 lunati roller cam 205 alum 11x brodix heads ske kickin out 625hp with a 400 tranny pullin it with all kinds of work she flys im scared of the shit cause it gets up in the 7000rpm range so fast GO CHEVY
why did you use a forged crank for that power level????? I assume that with those specs your making 450hp tops, I would have used a Scat or Eagle cast steel crank, it's good up to around 550hp for a whole lot less money than a 4340 forged crank.
Thats part of it, plus if possible ya have to leave room for the future. See now hes talking about adding a 200 hp shot N2O. The bottom is all ready stout enough. always build the best foundation you/ or they can afford. saves a lot of work later on.
and when u got tired of 550 you would have torn it all down and rebought it everything instead of already having a bullet proof bottom end to build from.
i have a 350 block,i got it cammed but i want it for the track wat do u reccommend i do to it? i want the truck to run 12s or so all engine so wat do u reccommend
its bored .060 =388............ .040=385 .030=383ci yes thats as far as you would bore a 350 block the stroke comes from the crank you use a crank from a 400 sbc witch is 3.75 stroke up from 3.52 stroke i think it is
hey 1st thing, is that mid 70's monte? next thing for opinion. I got a 79 malibu with a LE9 305. now i really don't want to go all out on a 305 however i do want to maybe put in a bigger cam. i was thinking about swapping the cam to compcam 12-208-2 with 211/221 .050 duration or the 12-234-2 with 212/218. i already plan on installing full length duramax headers, 2.5 exhaust, & dual glasspacks. what has me worried is that comp say i need to have the heads milled. is taht true?
hey i was jw im thinking about getting a edelbrock cam and i was asking what do u think of yours like it sounds lumpy but id rather ask you then assume anything over a video. Like how do you like the cam?
It performs pretty well. there are a lot of things to consider. carb, heads, exhaust, intake, but mostly whats your intended use, I built that motor for someone. Comp cams makes some really nice grinds.
well i was planning on getting a edelbrock 750 performer carb, performer intake, hooker full length compition headers, with 2.5 inch pipes and flowmaster 40 series mufflers. And ive been looking at edelbrock packages and asking people what they think of the cam, and eventually i want to get the performer heads. My intentions for the motor is to be more respectable amount of power but not insane atleast for right now.

@STLherps this motor only had about .535" lift, but was also mostly a hot street car.

THATS ABOUT IT FOR A STOCK EARLY CHEVY BLOCK. Some of the newer motors they're building 427 cid small blocks. BIG BIG BREAD Though.

Nice. Sounds pretty bad! In the good sense
Is that an early 70's camaro?
I just rebuilt a 400SBC to put in my '50 chevy.
Waiting for the cam to get here!
Might be another year before I can finish the car though. :(

Whats the difference between a 383 and a 388
AMWWORKS 3 years ago
just the bore. this motor is 4.060 bore by 3.75 stroke (with 5.7 rods) which equals 388.39 cubic inches.
