I on the contrary think a lot of young people could benefit more by listening to unconventional performances.I think the hiss makes her seem bad.But this is awsome.
@eruptionista I just discovered another recording on YouTube: just search for "A Touch of Women - Historical Female Pianists (10)" and you will find a recording where she plays an Arensky Etude (Opus 36 no. 13 in F sharp major).
@d60944 I quite agree, but still it's original and interesting. I wonder if some other YouTubers could upload other examples of her playing, maybe of more succesful (?) recordings like the Liszt Liebestraum, the Bach-Tausig Toccata or the Arensky Etude.
@pianopera I didn't mean to sound like it was a problem. As I think I commented on my Edison cylinder of the Mendelssohn Spring Song, hearing uninspired playing from historic recordings helps me to put in perspecive the reason why the great historic pianists are great. Somtimes it's dangerously tempting to hear all that hiss and think by default "ah here we are back when the world was right and good", when that never was so.
@d60944 But in fact, in more than 90 % of the cases, I am not disappointed when I listen to a historic recording, on the contrary, most of the time I am deeply impressed...
Thanks for uploading this!

Sir Erwin - what a thrill to hear this performance. May we hope to hear more of Novello's work on YT?

@pianopera Thank you so much! This gives a better idea of her qualities.

"Original and interesting" indeed (though perhaps not as original and interesting as the composer's own recording!).

Wiki has her dates as 1884–1928 (?)

Hmmmmm. She may have studied with a master, but this really isn't very fine interpretative playing.
