Mr. Cruise is absolutely correct. But the reporter is more than a jerk. The reporter is a bully who has just assaulted Mr. Cruise. He intentionally projected water into his face without Mr. Cruise's permission.
Mr. Cruise reacted with much more civility than I would have. Hopefully, charges were pressed against the bully. Even though it wouldn't qualify as felony assault it is still technically assault. It is blatant disregard for one's personal space and an invasion without permission

@zummone . Let's look at it a little further. So, if Mr. Cruise, an adult, threw water back in the bully reporter's face then that bully reporter can technically charge him with assault. The legal definition of assault is touching someone intentionally without that person's permission. There are differing degrees from no damage (but perhaps Mr. Cruise's clothing was affected) to felony assault.
