You know something is messed up about religion and worship when I'm getting recommended to "foot worship" videos on youtube when coming to watch your videos.
Yea, it was like that when I was forced to go to church. People dressed to impress. Me, I've never liked suites and ties. At least I never liked ones that didn't have a Ravenclaw crest on them.
Wasn't there something in the bible about the rich not making it into heave all that easily and also that one should give up most if not all worldly possessions (and other rules)? Then why isn't the collection tray always filled to the brim I wonder? Especially since "god will provide" is a popular mantra for the downtrodden.
When I was a Christian I rarely ever dressed up for service and when I did, it was to impress a girl, and I knew I was doing it for that reason alone. Service always felt strange to me, and all too often I would notice the cult-like practices. That's probably why I would stop going around October until after the Super Bowl, lol, I had to stay home and worship my true god, the Buffalo Bills and my fantasy football team (back to back champion yeah!)
Good sir, you are extremely well-spoken. It was a privilege to listen to you speak. Are you a southerner by chance? Just curious by the hint of accent I'm getting from you.

I see. I'm from the Mid-west, so I'm in a bit of the same pickle as you, but nowhere near as worse. Isolation can feel so terrible at times, but arguing with believers makes it worth it at times.

@KingHeathen Thank you very kindly, King. It means a lot to know that this medium can be effective, even for those not fond of the effect, especially in the case of those I hold notable respect for.
Long time viewer; first time poster. You're videos continue to blow me away. You have a way of putting the jumbled thoughts and ideas that float through my head daily into such eloquence. I applaud and thank you!
When I was a Southern Baptist kid the Sunday dress up routine confused me mightily. Not because I didn't like (I didn't) but because even as a child it seemed to have no meaning yet the grownups made a real big deal about it.
It became apparent to me that the dressing up, like so many other facades my parents carried, were not for god but for the other people in the pews.
The last time I went to a Pentecostal church the perfumes, hair spray, and colognes made me physically ill it was so thick.
@MacNutz2 Raised in a pentacostal church so I know just what your talking about. Dress up and look good or not be allowed in always bothered me as well. They said that god was all knowing and even as a 6 yo I always thought that if god knows everything then he knows that your just dressing up to impress the other people in the church and it had nothing to do with him. Any wonder why I'm an atheist now?
@JMcH Who said that the specific descriptions of the Christians I see in my town applies to the whole of Christianity? There is no delusion here- there is only a description of reality. When I was a Christian, I did not behave this way, but MANY did and just as many still do. It is they who I am addressing. I had these same questions in mind when I was a Christian, but now I'm mature and outspoken enough to ask them.
@JMcH When you pretend to know what someone's talking about, even when (s)he specifically explains to you that that's NOT what (s)he is talking about, you are being unreasonable. The issues brought up here are for whatever Christians they apply to and obviously NOT for those who don't. If you're not one of the Christians who treat church like a fashion show, it's not about you. if you are one, then it is.
@GrapplingIgnorance - You're backtracking. If you weren't talking about all Christians in general in your video, you would've made that more than clear at the time.
@JMcH It's perfectly clear. If the video DOES say "all Christians" then that's what it's about. If it doesn't state the absolute of "all Christians" than it's clearly referring only to those it applies to. Again, this is a poem- not an essay, and I'm not going to tack an unnecessary preface to the poem to remind the hyper-sensitive Christians who this may not apply to that there's no point for them to be offended by it.
@GrapplingIgnorance - If you intend to address a select few Christians, then you should make that pretty clear. As it is, your comments can very easily be interpreted as being directed at all Christians.
@JMcH Who said I was talking about a "select few?" There are many Christians this applies to. It's not just a select few, and your failure to realize that ranges between a select few members of a group and the entirety of a group do exist. I don't know specifically what percentage of Christians this applies to, but like I said- if it doesn't apply to you, then it's talking about you, unless it states that all Christians are as I describe, than that's not what it means. Moving on.
@JMcH I'm not saying that all christians are like this but I had gone to churches that refused me entrance because I wasn't in a suit and tie. I had been in other churches that didn't care how you were dressed. I will say this though, 90% of the churches that I had ever been in required you to dress in at least a polo shirt and dress slacks before they would even think of letting you in the doors and to be an offical member you had to be in a suit and tie.
@JMcH 1 of them no longer exists as its parishners left it because of an incident where the preacher molested his adopted children (sadly this happened while I was a member of this church). It was a pentacostal church, Assembly of God. I don't remember where they were because it's been ~20 years ago. As for a church that didn't care about how people are dress It's in The city where I now live and it's called "Wings of Deliverence".
@JMcH I've given you the evidence that you require and yet you still doubt. Typical of some christians, especially creationists. You give them the evidence that they are asking for and they still say that it isn't enough. Test it yourself. Go to any pentacostal church in jeans and a t-shirt on a sunday and try to get into services. They will send you back homw to change because they won't allow it in "their" church. I know I grew up in that religion.
@lautz73 - You provided no evidence for your claims of churches refusing you entrance based on your attire. What bunk! One church is conveniently closed (which in itself is difficult to believe) and you can't remember even one other church that did this to you from a mere 20 years ago. If that happened to me, I'd very clearly remember such a church.
As for Pentecostal churches, there are three where I live. I will call them today and ask them if they have any dress codes.
@JMcH You can check for yourself. Get in touch with the Assembly of God system and ask about the closed church in Decatur Indiana. It was on Elm St. I lived across from it and the parsonage was next door to me. I'm pretty certain that I know what happened while I was living right by it. Try again.
Also the names of the churches that I can't remember are all pentacostal. That's why I suggested that you attempt to go to 1 dressed like you go to yours and see for yourself just how they are.
@lautz73 - Again, convenient. You and I both know that no one withing the AoG system would talk about such a thing. A search for info. and news about that church pulls up very little and nothing about your claim.
@JMcH I was a memeber of that church when it happened. I know that incident to have happened. You can doubt all you want. Have you tried to go to a pentacostal church not dressed up? If you haven't then you can't make the claim that it isn't the case.
@JMcH Not even YOUR version of christianity speaks for the whole of christianity. Since there are over 33,000 sects of christianity (each one saying they are the "true" christians) out there, ANYONE taking about it is generalizing.
If you want to see examples of "Sunday Best" go to a baptist or better yet, Southern baptist service. The ones I like especially are the services where they are a hoopin' and a hollerin. Funniest shit you ever saw.
@Diasanti - "My" "version" of Christianity actually does speak for the whole. Christianity is nothing more than the belief that Jesus is the Christ. Now, if you're talking about denominations (or "sects," as you put it so invectively), that has nothing to do with what is or is not Christianity and it certainly has nothing to do with determining which groups are "true" Christians.
@JMcH You just want to argue for the sake of arguing. You know very damn well this video is an "if the shoe fits, wear it" video.
Christianity is more than "Jesus is the Christ." I have actually heard other "christians" tell other "christians" that it is desrespectful to god to show up in the "lord's" house in common garb. That you are suppose to look your best in the "house of god."
Yep... and it turns into a fashion show after awhile.
@Diasanti - No, I don't know that this is that type of video. There's nothing in it indicating anything other than it being addressed at all Christians.
Christianity, at its core, really is nothing more than acknowledging Jesus as Christ. It is the very definition of the word.
Regarding what you've allegedly heard and seen, so what? Anecdotes prove nothing.
@Diasanti - It's funny that you mention Baptists because that's exactly what I am. I wear jeans to church, even on Easter. So do a lot of the other people who attend. I don't know if I even dare mention our Saturday evening contemporary worship service. It might make your brain explode.
@Diasanti - It's not about "being myself." If I were to "be myself," I wouldn't go to church, much less believe in God. The Christian life isn't about "being yourself." It's about dying to self.
@Diasanti - Of course, your comment begs the question: "Why does wearing jeans = being yourself, but dressing up != being yourself?" It's like these kids who all dress the same while vehemently declaring their individualism. Right.
dear utube. has anyone read Evidence That Demands A Verdict :historical evidences for the christian faith by Josh McDowell? a christian who is very concerned about my soul gave it to me but the print is fucking tiny and i have a stack of more exciting books i just scored. pleaz, i am a wee bit lazy and i dont want to slog through it. r there any vids already out there or essays/articles that have done the painful task of refuting this 4 me?i am trapped in a discussion that i have no interest in.
@screaminmeani Look for an audio reading of the book, or search youtube and google for reviews on it. What you probably shouldn't do is treat a youtube video that has nothing to do with that book as if it's your personal forum for discussion on the matter.
@GrapplingIgnorance holy fuck, sorry. i just figured you have fairly intelligent and well read peoples that follow and perhaps they had read this apologist i had never heard of. if i cant ask questions about christian apologists on your discussion board then where should i go mr? thanx fer bitch slappin me so i dont act like i can talk to the cool kids or ask questions out of turn. i did enjoy the sentiment of the vid btw. like comment threads never open up other discussions...grumble
@screaminmeani Nobody said you couldn't talk to anyone. This is a comment thread on a video, where people share their thoughts, critiques, complements, or anecdotes about that particular subject. This video had absolutely nothing to do with what you brought up, which is why I responded the way that I did, and I thought I gave you pretty common sense advise on how to get the information who were actually searching for.
@GrapplingIgnorance yes sir. you did. and i realize one thing had nothing to do with the other. it was wee morning hours and i just watched your vid and that is what i was thinking about.also my rational is broken:) the book is horrible.
I know I don't comment often but I have to here. Bravo! I saw this every sticking Sunday when I was growing up and it made me sick! Picture of Jesus there with his arms wide open, the Bible verse to "suffer the little children to come onto me" at his feet yet the ragamuffin children in our area were looked down on by those who felt the children weren't dressed to their satisfaction. Fuck them!
you should see the mansion that the local celebrity preacher is building here. It is disgusting. his followers have no problem with it. Jessie Duplantis.
Your observation is very true. If a mechanic turned up to Sunday Worship in his overalls then it would be the congregation and not god (even if it existed) who would be providing the discerning stares and disaproving gossip.
At least the Muslims are consistent by dressing up as Coco the Clown every day.
Its either believe in religion.Or believe in a religion of trash. Our entire society has become a fabricated piece of trash. So dont blame people if they to believe in something.Everything is a fabricated joke. What do you believe in that isnt fake?If you can come up with something.Get back to me in the next five years.lol
@wastelandsoldier1 By principle if someone believes there's no proof for or against it. It's the definition. Doesn't change the fact that some things are more rational to believe than others. There's an infinity of possibilities other than god for our existence, so it's irrational to believe that.
In half it's mission time the Kepler space telescope found more than 50 planets that could hold life like that on earth. Believing there's life somewhere else than earth isn't so irrational then.
I enjoy your poetry. these clips always strike me as more likely to be watched end to end by a religious person and actually provoke tohught rather than a knee jerk close the window.
Seen DarkMatter's video, heard your story. Subsribed to you yesterday. You are far better than anything I've ever hoped. Nice video thank you very much!
@ImAnotherZang What dark matter video are you talking about? Can you reply with the link? This is the first video ive seen of grappling ignorance and now you struck my curiousity. Thanks
@kx32ta1 DarkMatter2525 made a video describing this awesome dude, a little bit about his sad past, and suggesting people to subscribe to him. watch?v=i8ivrcVSdaM
Thanks for this Grappling. When I was still a christian, I always wondered why should it matter what clothes you wore. I mean God knows what everyone looks like naked anyway right? And I also wondered why it was necessary to go to church to worship God. He's everywhere right? What makes a synagogue, temple, mosque, or church any better? Keep up the good work grappling.
This makes me think of the strong irony in the actions of dressing up for church. The first indication that adam and eve had fallen from god's grace was adam covering his nudity. And tmodern day church goers honor that god by finding the fanciest clothing in which to display their shame from the supposed original sin?
@lex811117 Well, and they also walk around with a model of the instrument of Jesus' torture and death hanging around their necks, and put up giant ones in their churches and on billboards. They think it's honoring his memory, but I can't imagine Jesus being a big fan of crucifixes. Imagine if he came back and saw all that -- it'd be like Marie Antoinette coming back and finding everybody wearing little guillotines.
@shehenazi Well the Taylor Mali thing was more character-wise, not really a guess as to what he looks like based onhis voice. Taylor Mali is a slam poet who is, or at least was, a teacher. So both Taylor and GI have those in common. They also both have a really wide vocabulary they use to speak with.
@phantomatt502 yea, you are absoloutely right with your comparison. thats why i said, i dont know why i picture adrian brody. lol its got to be the voice since ive never seen him.
Ok, I know you got plenty of comments that this would make a great rap. Ok, you might think not. However, it still might make a good "Beat" poem set to some kind of music in the background. Its got some kind of musical meter to it.
I buy my groceries on Sunday mornings(because I live in a southern USA town full of fundies) and get a big kick out of the fashion show that presents itself when the churchgoers come in before/after their church visits. Last week, I saw the most crazy hats on some ladies. Also, one guy was wearing a white shining silk suit, white shoes, white hat. He looked more like a pimp. All he needed was a nice bright boa to accessorize the outfit. I guess god needs to see the show.
@saxmanchiro I do the same thing because the grocery store and the laundromat have very few people in them. Parking and shopping are much easier when most of town is somewhere else.
@anninhilator Does an omniscient god need a you to symbolically show that you respect him? Wouldn't he already know that you respect him? That was the point of that part.
@deepashtray I don't think it would, there's almost no rhyme scheme in most of the poems I post here. He does fantastic work all on his own, but I love the guy's channel and I'm sure he knows he can use any of my lines any time he wants.
they dress up, to show status & wealth IN the church. & it makes you sit closer to the pastor the better you dress. im positive of this. especially when they tape everything and sell the tapes & use them in broadcasts. *former church go-er*
I had to listen to that twice. That was deep! The Sunday attire never came to me as ironic untill now. Holy shit.
Theres this old cathedral a few blocks from my house and everytime I see the flock getting ready for their Jesus rituals, I notice nothing but limos, pearls and Bentleys. Mainly rich old people.
I think the old conformist and traditionalist ways are dieing out with the old folks who insist on constantly pushing their values on the younger generations. When you think about it, many "believers" are just trying to appease the ancient elders around them (as implied in the poem). People need to learn that we have our own lives and the elderly should not forever have this power over us.
@123backinyerface "He's (god) all knowing, all powerful and all wise but he just can't handle money. Religion takes in millions of dollars a year and they always need a little more." George Carlin --- RIP.
Nice poem, ironicly there are alot of things in the bible and such and other Christians will rile against, the Chrstiains that think that dressing up and givng a bit of money makes them holy or such.the snotty old woman that wants to appear to be better then everyone else kind of thing.
Grappling: Have you ever dabbled in beat poetry? Personally, I think your voice would sound great alongside some smooth drums and double bass. It's just a thought.
Nice man - I gotta go with deemzje - this vid is begging for a beat :)
"Women shall adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array." -- 1 Timothy 2:9
heh, last sunday i was in a church filled with people in th national suit of norway, i wore my normal clothing style and just fo the share lulz mjoilnir necklace, and the singing, if you know the words you can have fun making them more atheistic, like heavenly father Darwin with your long white beard and tortoise riding skills..i ameally glad my mum share my faith and is able to keep herself from laughing
I hope all those clothes are made from the same material, Bod condemns the mixing of fibres!! no silk ties ...and why do people not remove their hats in church? women as well as men...respect people respect....great verse GI
If the faithful wanted to show their creator how much they appreciated his work they'd show up naked to services, the better to admire and respect all the "irreducible complexity" and detail expended in making an integrating all the various parts that make the naked human form attractive and pleasing to the eye.
Then on May 1 they could wrap up a phallic symbol with ribbon and the tribal youth could get in a good hearty ritual fucking like the "old days."
@deemzje I stopped uploading poetry in quadrants and couplets because when I write such poems I usually intend for them to be read up tempo. Every time I upload one the comments quickly fill with people whining that I'm trying to rap and doing a bad job at it. It's not my intention, so I just stick to free verse here now. Check out Rational Warrior's channel if you want to experience outstanding atheist hip-hop.
I've been in churches that didn't care how you were dressed and I've been denied entrance to others that said I needed to have on a suit and tie just to attend services. They didn't seem to like when I quesiotned them why it matters, that god doesn't care how were dressed just that we worshipped him. Of course this was when I was a believer.
As the quote from The Notorious Bettie Page goes, "Adam and Eve were naked in the Garden of Eden. It's only when they sinned that they put on clothes."
Your an inspiration. much respect for you

lautz73 8 months ago
@lautz73 - You claim doesn't appear to be the case with "all" Pentecostal churches. Imagine that.
Regarding this alleged "incident," once again it's oh- so convenient that it happened "over 20 years ago and was kept out of the local newspaper."
JMcH 8 months ago
@JMcH I was a memeber of that church when it happened. I know that incident to have happened. You can doubt all you want. Have you tried to go to a pentacostal church not dressed up? If you haven't then you can't make the claim that it isn't the case.
lautz73 8 months ago
@JMcH Not even YOUR version of christianity speaks for the whole of christianity. Since there are over 33,000 sects of christianity (each one saying they are the "true" christians) out there, ANYONE taking about it is generalizing.
If you want to see examples of "Sunday Best" go to a baptist or better yet, Southern baptist service. The ones I like especially are the services where they are a hoopin' and a hollerin. Funniest shit you ever saw.
Diasanti 8 months ago
@Diasanti - "My" "version" of Christianity actually does speak for the whole. Christianity is nothing more than the belief that Jesus is the Christ. Now, if you're talking about denominations (or "sects," as you put it so invectively), that has nothing to do with what is or is not Christianity and it certainly has nothing to do with determining which groups are "true" Christians.
JMcH 8 months ago
@JMcH You just want to argue for the sake of arguing. You know very damn well this video is an "if the shoe fits, wear it" video.
Christianity is more than "Jesus is the Christ." I have actually heard other "christians" tell other "christians" that it is desrespectful to god to show up in the "lord's" house in common garb. That you are suppose to look your best in the "house of god."
Yep... and it turns into a fashion show after awhile.
Diasanti 8 months ago
@Diasanti - No, I don't know that this is that type of video. There's nothing in it indicating anything other than it being addressed at all Christians.
Christianity, at its core, really is nothing more than acknowledging Jesus as Christ. It is the very definition of the word.
Regarding what you've allegedly heard and seen, so what? Anecdotes prove nothing.
JMcH 8 months ago
@JMcH If someone needs to walk you though the video....
BTW, when in the video does he say ALL christians? (rhetorical) Oh know, you're reading into it. Trying to make an argument where there isn't one.
Done. Have a good day.
Diasanti 8 months ago
@Diasanti - It's far easier to read all Christians into it than it is a select few.
JMcH 8 months ago
@Diasanti - It's funny that you mention Baptists because that's exactly what I am. I wear jeans to church, even on Easter. So do a lot of the other people who attend. I don't know if I even dare mention our Saturday evening contemporary worship service. It might make your brain explode.
JMcH 8 months ago
@JMcH Jeans to church? Good. Good. That's what called being yourself. Obviously, the video is not about you.
Moving on....
Diasanti 8 months ago
@Diasanti - It's not about "being myself." If I were to "be myself," I wouldn't go to church, much less believe in God. The Christian life isn't about "being yourself." It's about dying to self.
JMcH 8 months ago
@Diasanti - Of course, your comment begs the question: "Why does wearing jeans = being yourself, but dressing up != being yourself?" It's like these kids who all dress the same while vehemently declaring their individualism. Right.

dear utube. has anyone read Evidence That Demands A Verdict :historical evidences for the christian faith by Josh McDowell? a christian who is very concerned about my soul gave it to me but the print is fucking tiny and i have a stack of more exciting books i just scored. pleaz, i am a wee bit lazy and i dont want to slog through it. r there any vids already out there or essays/articles that have done the painful task of refuting this 4 me?i am trapped in a discussion that i have no interest in.
screaminmeani 9 months ago
@screaminmeani Look for an audio reading of the book, or search youtube and google for reviews on it. What you probably shouldn't do is treat a youtube video that has nothing to do with that book as if it's your personal forum for discussion on the matter.
GrapplingIgnorance 9 months ago
@GrapplingIgnorance holy fuck, sorry. i just figured you have fairly intelligent and well read peoples that follow and perhaps they had read this apologist i had never heard of. if i cant ask questions about christian apologists on your discussion board then where should i go mr? thanx fer bitch slappin me so i dont act like i can talk to the cool kids or ask questions out of turn. i did enjoy the sentiment of the vid btw. like comment threads never open up other discussions...grumble
screaminmeani 9 months ago
@screaminmeani Nobody said you couldn't talk to anyone. This is a comment thread on a video, where people share their thoughts, critiques, complements, or anecdotes about that particular subject. This video had absolutely nothing to do with what you brought up, which is why I responded the way that I did, and I thought I gave you pretty common sense advise on how to get the information who were actually searching for.
GrapplingIgnorance 8 months ago

Fuck them!

wastelandsoldier1 9 months ago
@wastelandsoldier1 By principle if someone believes there's no proof for or against it. It's the definition. Doesn't change the fact that some things are more rational to believe than others. There's an infinity of possibilities other than god for our existence, so it's irrational to believe that.
In half it's mission time the Kepler space telescope found more than 50 planets that could hold life like that on earth. Believing there's life somewhere else than earth isn't so irrational then.

Thanks for this Grappling. When I was still a christian, I always wondered why should it matter what clothes you wore. I mean God knows what everyone looks like naked anyway right? @phantomatt502 I take that as a strong complement. Thank you.
GrapplingIgnorance 9 months ago
@GrapplingIgnorance
Very nice...
This makes me think of the strong irony in the actions of dressing up for church. The first indication that adam and eve had fallen from god's grace was adam covering his nudity. And tmodern day church goers honor that god by finding the fanciest clothing in which to display their shame from the supposed original sin?
lex811117 9 months ago
@lex811117 Well, and they also walk around with a model of the instrument of Jesus' torture and death hanging around their necks, and put up giant ones in their churches and on billboards. They think it's honoring his memory, but I can't imagine Jesus being a big fan of crucifixes. Imagine if he came back and saw all that -- it'd be like Marie Antoinette coming back and finding everybody wearing little guillotines.
artgoat 9 months ago
@artgoat very true. I find christian endlessly fascinating.

@phantomatt502 idk why, but when i hear GI talk, i picture adrian brody. I have never seen GI so i'm not sure why, maybe its his voice.
shehenazi 9 months ago
@shehenazi Well the Taylor Mali thing was more character-wise, not really a guess as to what he looks like based onhis voice. Taylor Mali is a slam poet who is, or at least was, a teacher. So both Taylor and GI have those in common. They also both have a really wide vocabulary they use to speak with.
phantomatt502 9 months ago
@phantomatt502 yea, you are absoloutely right with your comparison. thats why i said, i dont know why i picture adrian brody. lol its got to be the voice since ive never seen him.

I guess god needs to see the show.
saxmanchiro 9 months ago
@saxmanchiro I do the same thing because the grocery store and the laundromat have very few people in them. Parking and shopping are much easier when most of town is somewhere else.

I think the old conformist and traditionalist ways are dieing out with the old folks who insist on constantly pushing their values on the younger generations. When you think about it, many "believers" are just trying to appease the ancient elders around them (as implied in the poem). People need to learn that we have our own lives and the elderly should not forever have this power over us.

it's that damned talking snake again!
