  • This is a travesty of justice. How could ne1 allow this butchery of one of the greatest songs of all time.

  • @MrJynxi How could anyone allow you to have such bad taste?

  • I enjoyed Joe Jackson's version far more.

  • God she's gross, especially the way she's always grinding her crotch against the stool. Way to ruin a genius Joe Jackson song, skank.

  • @SpudMills Funniest comment.

  • @SpudMills You sexist sludge. Really? You are going to attempt to sexually shame her for covering a song that breaks down sexism, gender roles, war, and heterosexism. Your synapses must not be firing correctly. Tori is a legend. I'm a gay male and Tori's cover speaks more to me than the original, I prefer sonorous voices. Remove your male bias, because it has no power in the defense of a sing that challenges such social programming.

  • @BoysForPele1989 It's not a male bias or sexist or any other shit you feel you must read into my reply, it's rejection of something I find gross and disgusting; Tori Amos.

  • Joe Jackson

  • i hope this filthy, scummy whore dies a horrible and brutal death...

why is it legal for her to murder this song in such or horrid, god awful way.

  • @musoshi That childish and stupid comment just says more about you now doesn't it?

  • This is a message to all of you parents, Father died recently, was going blind. Tori Amos can play the piano, blind, David Gilmore (pink Floyd) can play the frets blind. I can play the hundred or so songs when the lights are out. Short term, helping them to make money is fine, but I built my first guitar. Start your kids early if they have a yearning to play an instrument. It's really an act of love for your children.

  • @craigusaurus hahahah debil...

  • this is from '01, right? So she was allowed to say "faggot" and "whore," but in '07 they wouldn't let her say "MILF" on the air when she played Big Wheel on Letterman? I don't get it.

  • @kjulietraven Censorship generally gets progressively worse as time goes on.

  • @kjulietraven Probably something to do with Kilborn's (slightly) later timeslot?

  • It's a great song.

Regardless of whether Joe or Tori sing's it.

  • recommend!

  • Why the hell is she covering this song at all? It's from a distinctively male prospective. It makes her look silly. How annoying that she did something like this. Poor judgement, perhaps? This cover just doesn't work for the basic reason that she's female. It doesn't translate in any way whatsoever.

  • @archraskal The purpose of Strange Little Girl's as an album was for Tori to cover typically "masculine" songs from a female perspective. Personally, I totally think it translates as the song deals with sexuality on numerous levels, so based on that it shouldn't matter what sex the person is who sings it. But for you, I would just say... Don't listen to the rest of the album, I don't think you'll like it very much!

  • Godess!!!!

  • I adore when Tori covers other folks' music, as much as I like her own. She finds shades and colors that no one else does.

  • poor cover

  • She changed the line "all the gays are macho, can't you see the leather shine" to "all the guys are macho, can't you see the leather shine" Gay Supporting Music industry whore!

  • @kryckeestrooff Unfortunately that one word change undercuts--without adding a meaningful change--the lyrics. Goes from one possible reading of the lyric to an explicit single one. Tori is a skilled writer but she's rarely a subtle one. Jackson is a subtle, even sneaky one. Still, credit to her for a great choice of cover.

  • I can't find this fight "Tori vs. Joe" meaningful. I didn't even heard about Jack Johnson until I heard Tori Amos' version of his song, and I found it very deep, profound. I think relevant songs should be re interpreted by other artists. That's the point of music

  • Great version of a great song.

  • @tramtrackharry

I disagree. I love Joe and love his original, but I think Amos provides a really interesting interpretation and performance. Even Joe really likes Tori's version.

  • @KaitainCPS Explain what's different and interesting about her performance apart from her 'not being Joe Jackson'. Is is because she makes 'meaningful' pauses and sings through her little nose? I curse her and all her seemingly million strong army of whiney imitators.

  • @tramtrackharry

    Yes. That's exactly it.

  • omg an orgasm that is singing!

  • who's this Karaoke girl?

  • @redguitartube I pity your lack of knowledge.

  • both versions rock!

  • She does a cover of a song and her interpretation gives it a meaningful dimension. Brilliant Tori.

  • I was never convinced by this chancer. Long live Joe.

  • Gorgeous....

  • nice version of the Joe Jackson classic

written in 1983 --- we still have a long way to go on these topics

    great song

  • @BabyDillGerkin Verrry long way to go mate, you're right — and why do I get the sinking feeling that we are going backwards ? Imagine the reactions when a heavyset long-haired guy looking like a Hell's Angel states he hates soccer with a passion and quotes Jean Genet's poems by heart ? (And I'm not even gay, just to go the whole stereotype way…)

  • @BabyDillGerkin

    Was actually released in 1982.

  • @KaitainCPS yes, 1982, thank you for pointing that out

  • re on spelling...drunk..maybe i wass..spelling ?? ohoh your right hehehe..it s terrible ....i should care more to be more clear and listen better:)

and she s an angle with chords i like so no worries an alagree

besides the spelling my keyboard is a nightmare 2 on recieving.my input sometimes..:)...i

  • Comment removed

  • @steinerdude I don't want to make you mad but .. were you drunk four hours ago? She sings the words soo clearly. " If there's war between the sexes, there will be nobody left." I've had very little schooling but some of the spelling here on youtube is unbeleivable !!!!Do'es anyone out there think Tori is absoluty seductivly georgeous singing this song, besides me?

  • @ufos22 most definitely! Most beautiful woman ever!

  • I usually don't comment on music because we all have our favorites from the past, but Tori reallly performs the Joe Jackson song to bring one to tears. Where the hell did Tori go? She's so good here.

  • no comment needed.

  • this song is very clever and strong. So many songs are so superficials actually. I would never thought a song could be so powerfull. It gives me some hope. Tori is an important artist. i love her.

  • they should both sing it and rewrite it as real men/real woman

  • I dunno- she's ok but I don't get the spark. I think Tori Amos is a little over-rated.

  • @surferbeto Yes i agree Tori is overated, Joes version (the origanal) has passion and better piano playing , Tori wrecked the meaning of the song by changing lyrics

  • @DaveyBoyEssexUK Tori is much better pianist.

  • @DaveyBoyEssexUK I think that Tori is better in playing the piano. And were has she changed the lyrics? I compared his and her version and they are identical. I don't think that Joe's has more passion, it is more a different one. The whole song get's a different meaning when a women sings it. And that is good. Keep going Tori

  • @Mehrfachkeks Well i think Joe is better allround , and yes the lyrics were changed, i dont think you listened carefully enough or maybe your hearing blinkers were on, Personally she holds too much back and her voice does not fit the song, at times she sounds like a crackilng crow, come the chorus theres no comparison theres far more passion in joes version. period

  • @DaveyBoyEssexUK She did change them? Tell me where, I want to know.

  • @Mehrfachkeks : She's singing "Na hooooo" instead of "Woah Hoah".

  • @sagewah Oh come on! Don't tell me that you ment that when you told me she changed the lyrics! That's no lyrics that's just a different way of sighting.

  • @Mehrfachkeks

There's a single change: "all the gays are macho" changed to "all the guys are macho".

  • @KaitainCPS hm..I looked the lyrics up and she definitely did not change it. Though I have to admit sometimes she mumbles pretty badly

  • @Mehrfachkeks

You are 100% wrong. Jackson's original lyrics are:

"Sure they're all straight, straight as a line, All the gays are macho, can't you see their leather shine?"

    Amos's altered lyrics are:

"Sure they're all straight, straight as a line, All the guys are macho; see their leather shine."

So which lyrics did you get wrong - Jackson's or Amos's?

  • @Mehrfachkeks

If you want to read a discussion of this issue, google:

"Today I had the greatest pleasure of talking to Mr. Joe Jackson himself"

  • Both great versions!

  • I like make romance explosion in her back pussy.

  • I really prefer the original.

  • I am continually astounded by the depth of this woman...How apropos that she performed this one around the time of 9/11. I love her cover of "Time" that she did then too. This song was one that I was not familiar with until the Strange Little Girls album. And hearing my favorite female artiste perform it, and give it even more teeth is really disarming. Tori's the best, and that's why she's the queen, no matter what she's exploring musically or philosophically. Much love to you, Tori!!

  • She sings this truly great song as a woman.Joe sings it as a man would.VERY GOOD A CLASSIC.

  • OMG, came from Joe Jackson to Tori Amos, love them both too!

  • Great Cover, by a Great Artist!!!

  • good cover

  • Joy, joy, joy...tears, tears and tears!!!!

  • Incredibly beautiful woman and very talented in her own right...but this song was written by the one and only Joe Jackson....

  • @0o0o099999 nope, the Joe Jackson that sang this original was a British guy. Look him up on wikipedia.

  • @0o0o099999

    Wtf?

  • i love her! She has the balls to sing but don't call me a faggot, not unless you are a friend. This and rattlesnakes are the best songs off of slg in my opinion.

  • @importantwoman Yes Rattlesnakes is wonderful I'm also a fan of Slayer

  • imma go watch the joe jackson original and im sure its gonna be good-but nothin will detract from my enjoyment of toris performance-

  • More polished. Joe is rough, Tori is refined. Love 'em both.

  • that's the idea...the whole concept of the album is men's song from a woman's point of view

  • Brilliant as always!

  • She's covered the song brilliantly...the way she slows down at times reminds me of Laura Nyro. And she looks gorgeous in this performance. ;-)

  • i like her singing but she shouldnt sing this song just sayin sorry if i get someone upset

  • the concept of this album is a woman covering men's songs from a woman's perspective

  • You can tell she didn't write this tune. She's doing it Tory's way. Fine. But not a replacement for the original.

  • surely....having your song covered is a compliment.......this is a beautiful and different take on the song.

  • LOLs I think it's funny when people get bitter when someone else covers a song by their favourite artist.

Just listen to it. If you like it, you like it. If you don't, you don't.... but don't bitch about it.

    ^ that was a bit of a mouthful =P

  • If there's war between the sexes then they'll be no people left...

  • Not bad but Joe is better live...sorry...it's true though!

  • Jec444 well thats a matter of opinion, I think :)

  • I agree with Domirail, I like Tori but she does not do this song justice.

  • If she's one of the most orrigional singer/songwriter's in music today, why is she performing a cover?

Whilst I don't think she does that bad a cover I think it looses some of it's power when sung by a woman. Also I don't think she gets the agression and bitterness across like Joe Jackson did.

  • This song is one of several Tori did on her Strange little girls album, where she covers songs exclusively written by men.

There is no doubt that Tori has earned her title as an original singer/songwriter. If she wants to do cover songs in adition to her own material, that`s HER choice.

  • Why shouldn't she perform a cover? She has written maybe hundred or more absolutely wonderful own songs and I think they are much better than her covers. I can only suggest to listen to her own music. But she can do great covers too. I think some songs become even more deeper when she covers them.

  • @LizardWizard7

Maybe because she likes the song......

  • @Domirail I totally agree with you there!

  • She's a complete freak, but I have to say that even though I'd never listen her other stuff, she really does a great job of bringing out the beautiful melodies of this song. I actually prefer it as I write this to the Joe Jackson album version, and I'm a HUGE fan of his.

  • This proves once again that Joe should have got a much well acclaimed "career".

Come on Joe, One more time...

  • Beautiful cover.

I like both of the versions, both are different. Its neat hearing Tori sing softer, making the lyrics really pop.

  • I LOVE how the Bose sounds! I actually taped this off the tv when it aired.

  • I remember this performance. Tori was in warrior mode, as I would be too performing on any program hosted by Craig Kilborn. Perfect song to perform in the presence of such a misogynist ass.

  • Shut up.

  • I love this comment, so agree.

  • Hi ! I don't agree with some persons that say that this song can't be sing by a woman, I even think that the song is "stronger" when it's a woman who sings. 5* ! I didn't know Tori Amos, but I'm gonna listen some of her songs ! BYE !

  • Very genuine... wow

  • Man, I can't believe I ain't seen this performance until now. It as though she sang every word straight from her heart (even though they aren't originally her words). I've never been touched by this song so intensely until this performance.

  • My god she looks gorgeous here!!

  • mmmm, the talented ms. Tori Amos outstanding job on a cover of a joe jackson song.

  • I like tori but i prefer joe jackson on this track. I cant believe this song was written around 82/83 it just seemed so indicative of what was to come in 21st century.

  • Give her more credit-I think she sings this more caring and more intelligent then the original artist.-Joe Jackson is great and Tori is Great.

  • more credit HA!

more care? u have got to be kidding

she makes it sound like a fairy tale when really its a serious D&M song

  • lol This doesnt come Near the Original in comparison!!! Joe Jackson is one of the most talenred singer song writer and musicians going , and had originality, this version is below par just, it takes all the depth out of the song... you Tori fans dream on and fool yourselves with lack of objectivity

  • embarrasing she even did this. JJ is far superior...from piano to singing.

  • Actually i think I am proud that someone picked up on such a very great ( and poigniant ) song; fook me in the time nobody cared about the issues in this song so if Tori has propogated it good one her... Oh yeah you all heard this song before and obviously were a JJ fan since "Sunday Papers" ... Don't piss me off now!

  • I disagree that there are no covers. If you truly love a song, you should be able to appreciate when other artists show their respect by trying to add another fact or dimension with their interpretation. There is no better compliment to Joe Jackson than to cover his songs.

As far as this particular performance--I did not love it, though I usually love Tori Amos. I didn't think it was very original. Not different enough than Jackson's version, though her phrasing & meoldy are interesting.

  • Ohhh shut it already...She is genious.

  • You are so right. This is a mockery.

  • I didn't give you a thumbs down but I couldn't disagree with you more. Beautiful style on a beautiful song. love the artistic interpitation.

  • she gave me a whole bunch of hugs once

    shes brill.

  • Wow she sang this on Nov. 2001, meaning 9/11 was still very "fresh" on everyone's, and to listen to the lines

"man makes a gun, man goes to to war, man can kill (...) kill all the blacks, kill all the reds, and if there's war between the sexes then there'll be no people left"

kinda puts it all in perspective.

  • please elaborate on this war on oil

  • Yes it was a war about oil by a bunch of he-men (frustrated Poofters) , angry at the world.Great Lyrics and music . This is a terrible cover. Listen to Joe Jackson's version. that is the shit!!

  • Comment removed

  • @GirlsThatWearBlue "Man makes a gun - man goes to war, man can kill and man can drink and man can take a whoore. Kill all the blacks, kill all the reds, and if there's war between the sexes then there'll be no people left."

  • @GirlsThatWearBlue well you can thank Joe for the Lyrics

  • @GirlsThatWearBlue But that lyric is in the original Joe Jackson version too, from 1983..

  • i'd have thought they would've censored "faggot"

  • I'm so glad they did not. This song is really important. Thank you Joe Jackson and thank you Tori.

  • Great song - especially the original by Joe Jackson. As valid today as when he wrote it.

  • BRAVO !!

  • What year is this?

  • you're kidding me right?

  • No I'm not. I have no idea how old or new this vid is, i just have founded Tori Amos :D

  • sorry, I had to ask; it says November 16, 2001 in the first couple of seconds of the video.

i've just founded Tori Amos too, i like her. enjoy.

  • Well fuck it, I didn't watch the video, I just listened the song! My bad (a big one!) :D

  • tori is fucking great!!! Smoke some ganj put in anything, but preferably to Venus and Back. That will be an unforgettable experience. My dad's music god is Jimi Hendrix, and he neve has liked music I listen to except for Tori. He says he can tell she is genuine.

  • I agree with you, except that I don't believe you have to smoke anything to listen to Tori. She provides the aural drugs....

  • She is stunning in this vid.

    I love Tori so very much . . .

  • wonderfully heartbreaking.

    love you T!

  • I like how she changes the perspective. Instead of a discourse on archaic vs. modern masculinity, her reading is throwing a wrench into the entire idea of masculinity. Having the androgynous woman character sing the song just adds a fascinating subliminal message (an idea she dealt with in "Raspberry Swirl" as well), that now, the 'real' men are women.

  • For goodness sakes! If you notice that all of the songs on Strange Little Girls are written by men. Tori wanted to take these songs and put a female perspective on it. She has mentioned this before. So, as to why she changed the lyric "gay" to "guy" was because she is speaking from a female point of view. If you notice the character in the album artwork, the character looks like a guy. So, the character is probably a drag king or transgendered person... but I think drag king.

  • she's amazing....

  • my mom is soooo obsesed with her

  • I prefer the original by Joe Jackson. Tori's version doesn't work for me.

  • I like both, really. Was just listening to Joe's, and it still sticks well.

  • this version is a million times better the originall is annoying

  • ashahahhaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...this was the funniest thing i ve heard in this page ahahaha....

  • I just watched Joe Jackson's and then noticed this version. Wonderful! Absolutely wonderful!

  • yes it's softer but still has her perspective

  • All of these songs off this album were taken from men, they are all remakes. I especially like her version of 97 bonnie n clyde.... I agree with the statement below as well.

  • Both the original and her version are wonderful. Why does it have to be one or the other?

  • Good performance...she sounds and looks incredible.

  • Who knew this affliction called war would now infect women? Have it your way, Burger Queen's?

  • Actually when a male gets together with a female in a married sort of way they become as one as it says in the bible so..you are only insulting yourself not to mention the mother who bore you; give it a break already plenty of people do remakes.

  • wat

Dont believe stuff written in ancient books.

  • Her interpretation is better. The phrasing is more effective when it's slowed down at the end of every line. It's more sentimental that way, more of a lament. She can make any song her own.

  • Oh how much I prefer Joe Jackson's original! This version doesn't do the song much justice I don't think.

  • does Tori have notes hidden under her long sleeves? you can see writing on her hand around 4:25.

  • She nearly always has something written on her hand - normally song requests from fans waiting for her outside of venues or bits of playlists, reminders, etc. :0)

  • I agree. If all she changed was "gay" to "guy" then she she didn't change anything. I, too, assumed she was talking about gay men in the first place. So I think I'll stick with Tori, as always, thank you very much. Tori has always been a genius. And I have no clue who is Joe Jackson is. Was a he pro football player or something?

  • hahah... don't hate on the guy that wrote it, for pete's sake!

  • This is so not as good as the original ! You MUST listen to the real one, with Joe Jackson.

  • I think you ALL need to go listen to the ORIGINAL...by Joe Jackson.

Nothing against Tori...but she changed the lyrics and changed the whole meaning of the song.

  • i think that was the point, babe!

  • So...I listened to the original and she "changed" the lyrics how?

  • The point of the album was the change the meaning of all the songs. They are all songs written by men and she used them from a womans point of view. Brilliant concept if you ask me.
