Too many other smash hit songs were popular at time this one was released. This song had to compete with songs such as "Bennie and the Jets", "Band on the Run", the Doobie Brothers "Another Park Another Sunday",, "Jet" by Paul McCartney,,(etc.). That's why this song didn't go so high up on the charts at the time.
My favorite song by these guys. I can't believe it didn't get more airplay, especially considering it made the under 3 minute criteria. Nice lead in the middle. Very raw and moving. Definitely reminds me of when I was a kid. Goosebump City.
@Hobodeluxe007 Could you expand on that a litlle? I for sure like this song much better. Both good. This one's just suits me better. Burton is a real songsmith.
@bluecatky: Was it only #39? Not, disagreeing with you, but I agree it should have done better. But then, i'm from Canada and they being a Canadian band, it got a fair amount of airplay, at least in my area. It had a sexy, up-tempo, driving rhythm to it. A good cruising song!
@Sunfried1 Yes, only to # 39 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1974. Which is a shame because I think it is a classic and should have easily made the top ten had it gotten more airplay. It actually did reach # 9 in Canada.

THIS A GREAT SONG AND BURTON CUMMINGS IS THE BEST. I think politics did them in. Just like now, probably the stations were all owned by a few companies who wanted to please those in power. Mrs. Nixon didn't like American Woman and discouraged the radio stations from playing it. Of course, Pres. "I am not a crook" Nixon was up to his eyebrows in Viet Nam so he wasn't happy about the lyrics about war. Something wasn't on the up-and-up when Star Baby was played for only a month, if that.
@camkit2009 I'm sorry, but that theory doesn't make sense. "American Woman" hit the charts in the US in March 1970 and went to Number 1, so radio stations didn't seem very discouraged from playing it. In between "American Woman" and "Star Baby" in 1974, the Guess Who continued to crank out songs that were big hits in the US, including"Hand Me Down World," "Share The Land," "Albert Flasher" and "Rain Dance." Their follow-up to "Star Baby," which was "Clap For The Wolfman," went to number 6.
This is a song that I just loved when it came out, and I find myself humming it to this day. Even bought it to play on my computer. GREAT song! They don't write 'em like this any more...
@lockenjr He used to anchor The National ... how about Mr. Dressup, Friendly Giant, Beachcombers and Front Page Challenge? We even used to watch curling sometimes on Saturday afternoon if nothing else was on!
Another one of those super groups of the late 60's and 70's. What a voice and talent Burton had. If there was another planet still playing these great songs I'd build me a space ship and check out.
I was about 10 when this came out. It was one of my first 45's I ever bought. Played it to death!! And on my grandmothers old console stereo. Remember those? About as big as a couch! lol!! Grandma who was a country only fan, could only tolerate a few plays before raining on me! lol!! What a memory. I still have that 45. :-)
"Star Baby" climbed no higher than #39 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, but made it up to #9 in Canada, where the group is from. Chicago radio superstation WLS, which gave the song much airplay for years, ranked the song as the 37th most popular hit of 1974. It reached as high as #4 on their chart of 5-18-74.
@Rusfi16 That is what opinions of the ego come our way for. Some we like some we don't. The ones we do not care for are the ones we pay the most attention to, and we should for they teach us about Us.
justinvh1 take a bow old son because you done good! Thanks for the upload of a really sweet jam from a band that cooked! Burton C. had STYLE, and the rest of the boys seemed to be enjoying themselves! Who could possibly ask for more? Although, not one of their more immediate and accessible tunes, as far as The Guess Who goes this puppy smokes! As always thanks You Tube for the space, and to justinvh1 for taking the time to upload some unadulterated pop bliss! And: OH YES ROCK ON SINDIGGERS!
Great song from the Great White North. I would love to have a white t-shirt with the words "The Guess Who" in front of a red maple leaf like the logo shown during the song's playing.
This song is absolutely joyful and poptastic, it seems so out of character for the other hits that the Guess Who had. I really do love this song, glad to be hearing it again after too many years.

Burton wrote this for Randy after he left the group and wrote "Taking Care of Business" which was a slam against his former band.
They obviously didn't split on good terms.
