I love Frank Deford's wit and storytelling skills. I normally don't care either way about sports, except when I listen to Deford's pieces on Morning Edition.
"Nazi traditions" were a myth crafted by a propaganda engine. If anything, that machine is stronger and more pervasive now than it ever was. A few references: "Fascism: A History" (Roger Eatwell); "The Waste Makers" (Vance Packard). For a more immediate example, NPR just used the ignorant turn of phrase "the giant economic forces that are sweeping the world"... what a crock of shit. Media passivation. Now they're running a feature on domestic violence in Russia. Get the point?
Olympics could also be the global forum for games, beyond national boundaries and according to the sense of humanity. The fact that it is run by the patriarchs and their megacorporations, or that it can't always abide by the political consensus, doesn't make it a bad idea. It is valuable just because it is a tradition from the Antique, despite the nazi torch relay. World Cup can be its cousin in the family of global sport games.
I like all organized sport. And at the top of my list is the Olympics, World Cup, European Nations Cup, Tour de France, Iran Man, International Track and Field, etc..
The thing that i do not like so much anymore is the excesive commercialization of all sport.
...And also the drug use that is overly covered by the media...to the point that it makes cool in the eyes and minds of the youth.
I believe in healthy body is a healthy mind, and sport is not enphesized enough in this day & age when kids rather stay home play video games. One more thing the overly price tickets, how can your average Joe & Jane take their children to watch game as regular event anymore?
I agree with "toopieare" in many countries they can name all their athletes their hopes.
I think Iraq needs something more than the Olympics. But yes an Iraqi national olympic team with equal men and women participants would be positive for them too.
It actually depends on what country you're in. Kenyans, I would assume, will be able to name their Track and Field athletes. A lot of people, not to mention entire nations, still dream of winning the Olympic medal... that's enough to give it meaning
This is spot on, particularly with regards to globalization. When we have Russians (for example) living in The States an using American resources, but representing Russia, how are they representing Russia? With Iraqi refugees pouring into Sweden, what will constitute a Swede in a few years? The idea that we represent countries is becoming outdated thanks to the globalists (Council on Foreign Relations). Immigration has taken off & we're ruled by international boards of directors and media.
