  • For those of you who are having issues with the drop down option and stereo mix... If you can't find it on the audacity program itself then go into your computer settings- volume speaker setting and just select from there. That's how I did it... If you guys are still lost then just google how to record sounds from computer and a bunch of YouTube videos should show up

  • You can use this too for youtube videos, you can import .flv/.mp4 into audacity, there you can change the export into mp3 (after you installed the LAME encoder said in this video), easy peasy

  • can you do this on a comp that has speakers instaled in it because i tried recording a song this way and it didn't work?

  • when i go into audacity, the drop down box doesnt drop down. its blank and wont go down. reason for that?

  • figured this out a while ago dont really use it but it certainly is good tho thumbs up

    Thanking you in advance

  • try googling audacity, the audacity website should have a link to the lame encoder download page.

  • We used audacity at school and my computer didnt have it either but then i moved computers and it was fine. Apparently its a technical problem or something.

  • Comment removed

  • I need help, I got a new PC and got Aducity, put the thing that lets you open stereo mix wont open, whats wrong??

  • i cant change it to a stero. i don't want the microphone and i dont know how to change it. much of the tool bar is also greyed out.

  • intitle:"index.of"(mp3|mp4|avi) "artist name here" search that on google much easier

  • i cant find the stereo mixer on vista...it has problems...the box is grayed and i cant find it in the recording divices

  • if its not in the recording devices then unfortunately your sound card doesn't support this feature.

  • It could be because you have an audio input device plugged in. Unplug it, close out of Audacity and open it back up.

  • when i play it on my ipod it sounds like ur hearing it from the background how do i change that?

  • @hokeymaniac333

Probably because the volume is down.

Turn up the input/output volume in Audacity.

  • thanks

  • Dude i need help my one dosent have sterio mix i know it sorta woorks with analog conecter but the sound quality awful can you plz help me dude

  • have you tried looking in recording devices for stereo mixer?

  • THANKS A LOT THIS IS AMAZING!

  • Thank you so much for this!

  • try this:

go to volume control > options > properties > select 'input' from the drop down menu > check off 'stereo mixer'. If that option is not there, unfortunately your sound card doesn't support this feature.

  • hey do u know if there is a way to increase the quality of the songs u get from audacity. Like when i play the songs i got from audacity on my mp3 player the songs don't have a split noise, like the guitar, bass, and singer and all other sounds are playing in both earphones. Is there a way to split them up to make them sound better?

  • by split noise do you mean the noise plays on both earphones? if you want to do that then you'll have to duplicate the channel you want to 'split' and set one of them to left channel and the other to right channel. Click the down black arrow on the track right beside where it says 'Audio Track'.

  • Yes i mean all sounds play in both of the earphones. So what u want me to do is make a copy of the music, paste it right below it and then set one equal to left and one to right?

  • yupp, thats right.

  • I tried that and it still didn't work. I don't think its possible with audacity but thanks anyway.

  • This is what I get when I type in the page for the lame installation! What do I do?

There is currently no text in this page, you can search for this page title in other pages or edit this page.

  • try this website:

    lame[dot]buanzo[dot]com[dot]ar

replace [dot] with a period (.)

  • Comment removed

  • i cant even click the dropdown box .. mines all grayed out .. what do i do

  • you need to enable your stereo mix option, the instructions are in the video description.

  • nothing new, you can do the same with the sound recorder in windows. It's like recording music from the radio back in the day.

  • omg thank you!!

i was looking how to download audacity for free xD

    thanks!!

  • I don't have stereo mixer on my mac. Also I did try the link in the description and it did not help. What should I do?

  • sro bro i'm not familar with macs because I use windows but you can always use a 1/8" male-male cable ,plug the ends into the mic and the headphone jack, and record normally (you don't need stereo mixer for this).

  • i can't find stereo mixer on my mac

  • it only works with windows

  • Great tutorial dude. I'm pretty new to Audacity and didn't know it could do that. Thanks a lot!

  • hay its the EE Z MUSIC EDITING company, i'm going to use this video as an advertise ment for my company

  • best tutorial ever.... you actually respond to the comments questions

  • chea good tutorial, btw I made it but how do I get better quality? thx

  • the quality will only be as good as the site your recording from. and make sure the volume isn't too loud.

  • kewl good tutorial I made it. btw I just wonder how to get better quality

  • Hey man, i dont have the sterio mix in the drop down. all i have is: Line in, Rear mic, and Microphone: could you help me please?

  • there is a link in the description on how to activate stereo mix. good luck!

  • And the thing is it recorded one song at first, but distorted the next one, then it recorded another one, and the next one was shit. ?????I think it might've had somthin to do with the volume controls cuz i did adjust them in between. but i dunno..what do you think?

AND MY GOD. the sound it records is sooo fuckin scary.lol its like echo distortion creepiness that fades out and goes higher in pitch when I stop it. like alien shit or something. HELP!!!!!

  • I've never heard of a problem like that lol. I'm not too sure on what's causing the distortion or the echo, maybe the wire? I can't be of much more help here, sorry. But you can try other ways of getting stereo mix to work, there is a link in the video description. Good luck!

  • Lovesack, using that cable introduced audio feedback in a loop. If you don't have Stereo Mixer on Audacity, try other settings. You will probably find it in a few tries. That wire will not work. You could buy an attenuated cable, but that's too costly.

  • Yeah. It definitely "captured " the song...and made it something totally diff.(BTW the problem, I mean 1 of the problems was mic jack..i used the one in the back this time.) But I tried recording it and it distorted the song. I mean I pused play on the song then as soon as i hit record there was an aweful echo sound and i stopped the original song, and it faded out in a really creepy echo. It didnt just stop. Why is it distorting the song and making it echo?

  • EXACTLY WHAT I DID:

Downloaded audacity.Didnt have stereo mix so went out n bought a 1/8 in cable.Plugged 1 end into the headphone jack in the front of my pc and the other end in the mic jack in the front of my pc. Selected mic input on drop down bar, found a song, hit play and hit record on audacity. And NOTHING HAPPENED!I hit playback on audacity to see if sumthin recorded and it didnt pick up anything!Did i do something wrong???PLEEZ HELP. all these people seem to get it, but I DONT!:(

  • there could be several reasons:

    1) your headphone and/or mic input doesn't work. try the inputs on the back of the pc

2)in volume control, check to see if the mic volume isn't muted

    3) try turning up the volume to the max on the song your recording

    4) you can also use the 'line-in' port instead of the mic (its light blue), and then in audacity, select line-in instead of mic.

  • Hi there :)

I've been using Audacity for a while to rip songs, but after I got a cam & mic it started recording from my mic instead of the speakers. I selected "stereo mix" in the dropdown menu and muted my mic but it still records from it. Do you know whats wrong?

  • Nevermind, I got it. I had to select 'mono mix' in the dropdown.

  • hi,

i've been fine up until step 4.

mine won't drop down, you know when it goes slightly grey and won't let you drop it down

    any solution?

    much thanks

    x

  • open up volume control > options > properties > select 'Recording' > check off all of the boxes.

  • :( i've got vista so that doesnt apply to me

    sorry :(

  • oh, in that case, this video might help because I use XP and not vista:

    watch?v=e5qa-HODWbc

  • awesome song, epic tutorial. thanks :]!

  • em... i havn't tried yet but im gonna try now

  • I'm wondering about the legality of the free music thing...I thought you had to pay for anything you downloaded nowadays...could you explain how that works? I appreciate your time.

  • Downloading music is legal, as long as you get it from legit places like Napster or iTunes for example. But when people download music using peer-to-peer programs, such as limewire, they are illegally sharing music. The way I show in my video, you are not downloading anything, but you are recording music that is hosted legally on sites such as youtube. This is not illegal.

  • fuck the law

  • But I want it to be stereo, how do I get it to record properly. I don't have a stereo option in the drop down list. Suppose I'll have to resort to the gay cable thing. Oh dear! Spoke to a geeky friend who said it's very difficult to buy one of those now.

  • oh, in that case, copy and paste the recording into a new track, select both tracks, and from the drop-down menu of the track thats on top, select 'make stereo track'.

  • It's recording as mono, but playing back as stereo. What is going on!

  • To change it to mono, click on the black triangle pointing down on the audio track (its in the upper-left of the track, beside 'audio track', and select mono.

  • Okay, after reading some of the early comments cos I was having problems doing this, I managed to record from your vid in mono but it sounds like stereo. I'm going to try a different vid and scream if it doesn't work!

  • the mic only worked in audacity thou

  • idk its so messed up.i went into volume controls and muted everything but stero mixer and my mic still worked when i spoke in it.

  • i watched the vid. again and still didnt see where the tutorial is

  • The box to select stero mixer won't work for some reason. Its just blank and faded. Do you know why?

  • yes you need to activate other mixer options (including stereo mixer), and the tutorial is in the video description under 'if you cant get stereo mixer'.

  • I don't have stereo mix or mono mix, all I can get is rear mic, microphone, and line in from the drop down menu. How do I get either Stereo or Mono Mix? My only devices are SigmaTel and Microsoft Sound Mapper.

  • there is a link in the vid description showing you how to enable stereo mix.

  • yea thanks for pointing that out, I forgot to mention it.

  • where the fuk were u when i new this

  • I've got two Windows XP comps, one a Compaq desktop and the other a Toshiba Techra laptop. I've not had any issues with the desktop but the laptop won't give me the "Stereo Mixer" option as a choice. Instead, it provides: "Line Volume", "Mic Volume" and "CD Volume". It doesn't matter which version of Audacity I've installed on the lpatop they all do the same thing (excluding 1.3 which won't even show the mixer combo box).

    Any ideas?

    -Nulinya

  • if that's the case, your sound card doesn't support stereo mixer. solution: use a 1/8" male-male cable ,plug the ends into the mic and the headphone jack, and record normally (you don't need stereo mixer for this).

  • hey this is a great but can i just ask is Wave Out Mix the same as Stereo Mixer because i cannot find it ad because i use SoundMax i dont think i will get it.

  • Yes, wave out mix is the same as stereo mixer. it is also referred to as mono mixer.

  • ah right thanks alot

  • I cant find stereo mixer.

I followed all the instuctions in the vid and in the posts you made to others.

  • Are you on Windows XP? If you are, and you followed the steps in the video, video description, and my posts to other people, there is not much else I can do, sorry. What you can do though is buy a 1/8" male-male cable from dollar store, plug the ends into the mic and the headphone jack, and record normally (you don't need stereo mixer for this).

  • Thx for the help I used to just stick a mic up to the speaker and let it record that way and edit it in sound recorder but this is much better! Saving space that would be used on limewire is great too! (Also if its too loud you can just use the amplify feature under effects and reduce the volume)

  • omg I luv u.okay so i tried audacity about a month ago and got hella excited bout it. but it didnt have the stereo mix option. So i downloaded 4 OTHER PROGRAMS for audio editing,n not one had the stereo mix either! I have xp so I thought that was the problem and id have 2 spend a shit load of money on Vista. but u cleared it up on the comment about a cable thing. im gonna go download it again now. THANK YOU:)

p.s.if any problem comes up,ur probably gonna hear from me again.lol....but seriously

  • glad I could help :)

  • yes i did everything i have had audacity for about a year now and i redownloadedit becasue i didnt have a drop down menu then i have one now but without the stero mix in it

  • ok go to control panel> sounds and audio devices> audio tab> in the sound recording section, click volume> check off stereo mixer.

or do the same thing a different way:

go to volume control, click properties, select the recording tab, and check off stereo mixer. hopefully it'll work.

    are u on xp?

  • hey peeeanuts i did the things that you said and i still dont have the stero mix on the drop down mixer. I am having serious probalem can you help me

  • did u follow the instructions on the video description?

  • oh man i was wondering if audacity could do this! my friend said it could but "he didnt remember how" of course. thank you very much for the instructional.

  • thanks for your patients and help lol

  • kkay glad to see u got it working. so to import songs into movie maker u need to export the file in .mp3 format. after recording, go to file> export as mp3. (in order to export mp3 files u need to download the LAME encoder.. which i'm assuming u did already?). once u have an mp3 file, just import media into movie maker (ctrl+i) and ur good to go.

  • LOL yeeeaa it worked for the labtop thanks for the help =)

  • alright ty

Ill try the instructions you gave me on my labtop before i go buy it though if it works on the labtop ill tell you.

and thanks for the help much appreciated.

  • hmmm stero mixer isnt there =/

  • dammn ariite i'm not too sure what is going on but if u still want to record online audio u can always try this:

get a 1/8 inch male-male cable from a dollar store (1/8 inch male-male cable looks basically like two headphone jacks on both ends) ok once u have that u plug one end into the headphone jack on ur computer and the other end into the mic input. then go to audacity and select 'mic' from the mixer. hit record and play the song. that will work for sure =)

  • theres just blank white space in the bottom right hand corner

btw sorry for being a pest im guessing u get this alot.

  • no worries =)

ok go to control panel> sounds and audio devices> audio tab> in the sound recording section, click volume> check off stereo mixer.

  • Volume control? Where can I find that on Audacity or on my computer?

  • its in the system tray. u know where the time is displayed on the bottom right hand corner of ur screen? look for a speaker icon and click on it.

  • Thanks for the help dude but im having a problem.

i am using windows xp and "stero mixer" isnt showing as an option I only had the first 3

yes i followed your instructions and looked around on the page you gave me but it didnt help.

Do you have any idea what the problem could be?

  • ok try this:

go to volume control, click properties, select the recording tab, and check off stereo mixer. hopefully it'll work.

  • Hey how do i get the stereo mix option? It doesn't come up on my laptop =( thnx

  • i gave a link in the video description on how to enable stereo mixer :)

  • how do i get stero mixer

  • hey will this mess up my computer in any way

  • its too long and boring if you ask me. i know a better way to do this flv to mp3 conversion. all you need is "total video converter" and a site that convert videos here in youtube into flv like gootube.

  • get total video 3.11 (registered) for free, and that whole paste link to a website thing sucks. just download 'video downloadhelper toolbar' from my video, and download pretty much any video from any site in one click

  • you see i downlouded everything and when i was trying to put a song to window movie maker it diden t work

  • hmm the drop down box was greyed out for me =/

and on the "prefrences" there wasn't anything that let me select stereo mixer.

oh well my pc must be too shit xD

    thanks anyway =]

  • i resaw ur video but when i put the mp3 format, it just says that it can't or something from LAm(i forgot the name)

  • yea u need to download the LAME encoder (use the link from the vid description. save it to a place u will remember. the first time u export a song in audacity in mp3 format, it will ask u where u put the LAME encoder. find the encoder and export the song.

  • 4. In Audacity 1.2.6 this will ask you if you want to locate the LAME encoder. Click "Yes". In Audacity 1.3.3, click the "Browse" button 5. In the dialogue box, go to the folder where you put lame_enc.dll earlier, and select it. 6. Click Open, then OK.

In the same "MP3 Export Setup" section, you can then in Audacity 1.2.5/6 set the bit rate of the exported MP3 by clicking on the downward pointing arrow in the "Bit Rate" dropdown.

this is the part i am stuck on

  • wait, i think i got it, thanx for ur help

    .)

    vampirethirst

  • hey i have a question, i did everything you said. however, when i saved and tried to open with itumes, it didn't work. please help! thanx

  • did u export the song in mp3 format?

  • i don't know how, i guess

  • well i kinda figured it out

it didnt come out as good as your cuz i was recording with this thing called "rear mic" so i had to turn everything off in my room so i can come out good and it came out pretty good just not like yours thanks anyways

  • what exactly are u supposed to enable?

  • to get the stereo mixer option:

    go to volume control

    options > properties

    select 'recording' at the top

    check off all the options
