I'm self taught and I found this very very useful. Reading sheets have been getting easier for me over time, but I' could never really identify the intervals. Thanks!
u can try pieces with syncopations..eg songs by norah jones, jay chou..it would be difficult at first. write down the counts, clap and count them aloud..
i hope this helps coz it did for me..and i'm passing it down to my students..even though it's v tiring
there isnt a quick fix to sight reading...there are several skills that may enhance ur sight reading skills..and proposed ways to polish it but ultimately u still need a lot of practice...and practice here means going thru many many unfamiliar pieces
also if u recognise what ur weakness are..take a conscious step to work on it..it could recognizing notes...it could be rhythm..
through my research, i learnt tht 70% of readers had problem with rhtythm..
so it'd be good to do rhythmic drills. i was once a v poor reader too and always relied on hearing a piece before playing. but it's skipping the process of working out the rhythm that had led me to just imitate and not think.
This is good. this should be taken in ur sight reading practice. i'm doing a research on sight reading...and based on a past research, neuroscientists found tht the part of the brain activated when sight reading music is associated with spatial processing. so it differs from language processing where ur processing symbols...so u should try not read note for note..instead try analyse spaces..intevallic spaced and overall structures..
Over time reading music gets easier. It was difficult learning how to read words when we were children, but we learned over time.

if u can get intervals down, sight reading isn't that hard. like oregon said the more u do it the easier it gets. just gotta put the time in.
