I'll take AMFA over the IAM any day of the week. The IAM fags are a bunch of bag-slammers who are unskilled. The AMFA certified technician is the equivalent of a highly trained surgeon. Long live the honorable! WE KEPT THESE BIRDS IN THE SKY!

Must be the inverter I am hearing before startup. I remember you could feel it under your feet at the cockpit entry if it was an old rotary style one.
Wonderful! I fly 580's in my desktop flight simulator, complete with a custom 580 panel and Allison sound package. Watching this makes me want to go flying!
Hey there, I'm currently working on a GMAX Convair 5800 (CV580 stretched cargo plane) for FS2004 and possibly FSX and it will include a custom panel and maybe a VC and Allison 501 soundset. If you want I will keep you updated on this aircraft.
Cool. I worked on 5800 #4 in real life. They were actually stretched from C-131s, a bit different from the 580 with smaller tail surfaces and different door locations.
That interior brings back memories. The only time I ever flew on a plane in Republic Blue (everything else I'd been on was in the MTM shceme already) was a CV-580 from MSP to DSM. That was 1985 and I was eight years old at the time, and that was my first propeller aircraft. What an adventure.
The 580 was the most comfortable airplane I've ever flown on. And as long as you weren't sitting across from the props, it was quiet, too. The biggest mistake NWA ever made was getting rid of those things. Maybe they sucked a bit more fuel, but they had class.
I use to fly those Convair 580's in North Central, Republic, and Northwest colors to places like Eau Claire, Minneapolis and Des Moines. An incredibly powerful aircraft with those two Allison 501's turning those huge props. Big passenger windows too!
They used these planes here for Frontier Airlines, not sure when they pulled them from service. Flew back from Denver on one in 1968. Ran into some turbulence & every body woke up that was asleep, quick. It didn't really bother me.
A frequently flew Frontier's Convairs when I was a boy.

Good video until you tried to get "creative" at the end with the white outline garbage.

Those 501-Ds are a trick to start without frying the starter. Ah, the days when starting an airplane engine was an art...

I'm interested in everything about Convair Metropolitans, and looking especially for videos from inside the cockpit.
I'm builing a Convair CV-440 simulator at our aviation museum, and your film gave me goosebumps :)
