I think they uses a bit old planes for airshow and stronger planes for combat.

India didn't had money to build this team with powerful aircrafts. Now economy is booming and these very old aircrafts wil be replaced with Tejas LCA and will give greater option with speed and acuracy to perform acrobats.

The Surya Kirans are second to only Frecce Tricolori. All other teams dont even come close. Check out the Lomcovac routine that Frecce Tricolori lead pilot does in his Mbb 339
