I too am from America. I was impressed with his answer. I too agree some of the americans are arrogant. And easily persuaded by pride. This clouds people's thinking and judgement. It becomes competative instead of insightful in seeing our real contributions. People desire the pride instead of looking at the big picture. No he doesnt speak speak fluent English. He started learing it 8 years ago and he uses it when he speaks of camera, but when he is answering complex questions than he speaks in Russia.

BTW- He is FLUENT in German language.

I watched a rare media speech he gave to a Latin America crowd in Central America on TV, via the Internet...why he spoke English in Latin America I don't know...but he spoke so well I couldn't even detect a Russian accent. He is no Dummy! But I don't understand why he needs a translator. He understands perfectly well what you are saying!

Giving a speach and answering questions is very different. You can have your speach written down on a piece of paper, so you don't even need to think, just read it out, with questions though it is trickier and thus to avoid being misunderstood he uses a traslator.

My regret is that we both have a common enemy that is radical Muslims and we need to cooperate to fight this SCOURGE that has targeted us both!
