Man, I feel like Buzz. When I was a kid, I was ignorant. I was a space ranger, a cowboy, anything! But then, when you grow up, you realize you can't fly. When you go to try to, you realize you're only human, and you can't be those things again. I will go sailing no more.
Well. Most of you say that it's about how you have dreams and ambitions and how when you grow up you realize it'll never happen. I saw one comment saying that this songs says the opposite, and about Buzz kinda flying in the end.. I think it's about him accepting reality, but then he achieve his goal in a different way, in a newer perspective, as if all the weights have been lifted off his shoulders. I think this song's about accepting reality as it is, and then getting over it and thrive once
This song gets me really choked up. It used to not, but I just registered for my Senior year of high school, all my friends are different now, things have changed. One of my earliest memories was watching Toy Story. I loved it so much. My mom even bought one of the big Theatre Stand ups for me.
I was listening to this on my iPod one day when above the stairs so I decided to jump off a railing to see if I could fly. It didn't work and I just fell and my arm came off. It was awkward.
everytime i hear this, i have to cry, and get goosebumps, just because i still see myself sitting there as a kid in the 90's in my Pyjama's under my cosy blanket, with a sandwich with some chocolate, everything seemed better back then, no shit with school, better society, everything was easier, those were the days man, i'm only 16 and i wish i knew back then how much i was gonna miss my childhood;
when buzz lands on the floor it's actually kind of funny because when he hits the ground "clearly i will go sailing no more" is sang but it's really really sad
@10GirlyTeenGirl01 It's alright, for the past 10 years or more I thought Woody's catchphrase "Somebody's poisoned the waterhole!" was "Somebody's toy's in the waterhole!" haha
I think this song is kind of about growing up. (Just my opinion please don't slam me!) It's like, as a child you have your dreams and ambitions and think you can achieve the stars, but then you grow up and realize that there is no way you could have ever reached your goals. Then you decide to defy the world and try anyway, but it's to late now. You admit defeat and join the millions of other downtrodden people, giving up your dreams and becoming an adult who can never imagine for the fun of it.
@TwistedRising ..... i think its the opposite - in toy story he actually does fly in the end, thus, the reason the song was chosen in the movie. It saying the OPPOSITE - you can achieve your goals.
He thought he was real, that he could fly in space as a captain of his spaceship. Flying among the stars, beyond the moon and to where no man has gone before. All the brave things he'd done? Vanished like a snowflake when he realised he was a toy and not a human and all the knowledge he had, was just programmed into him and not his memories.
The song is about the realisation that Buzz will go sailing no more.
Randy made these songs specifically for Toy Story, so i've come to the conclusion that it's basically about Buzz. His entire "life" he's believed he's an inter-galactic space traveler, and now he's coming to the realisation that this isn't so. The part "I could fly if I wanted to!" is him trying to deny this... and then the end, again, when he ultimately realises that everything he's believed is a lie.
Apart from this, I absolutely adore this song! Toy Story = my childhood <3
@ prinilen, He sails in his ship looking for a place no man has discovered before however he concludeds there is no unmarked land thus he will go sailing no more. But he refuses to give up therefore he convinces himself he can explore the sky aka"But no, it cant be true. I can fly if I wanted too"
I love Randy Newman. The guy can make a fantastic song out of anything. Dare I say, he made Toy Story what it is today. You hear one of his songs and you know exactly where in the film it is from. Any other film, you'd probably not.
Disney Pixar Film + Disney Pixar Soundtrack = Utter Perfection.
This is a beautiful song and obviously most people know it from Toy Story, and I watched that part as a kid and wasn't phased at all. However now at 18, I fill up hearing this song - it is so powerful and moving.
this is probbly the only triligy ive seen when the long delayed 3rd installment ROCKS, in some ways better then the first two. it was a challange, and a bit of a curse to overcome. congrats, pixar.
I'm about to cry so hard i feel so bad like why do they have to make it sad when Buzz freakin now notices he is just a toy! WOW!!! I hate this part and i feel sorry for Buzz.
I'm about to cry so hard i feel so bad like why do they have to make it sad when Buzz freakin now notices he is just a toy! WOW!!! I hate this part and i feel sorry for Buzz
This can be for more than Buzz Lightyear. If you've played Final Fantasy X before, you would know that after the party enters Beville Temple and they see the machina there, you could play this song for Wakka when he sees the teachings are all lies.
One of the saddest songs I have ever heard. I think it was written with the plot of Toy Story in mind, but the idea is very relate-able to many of life's depressing situations, where one's confidence has been shattered by the carelessness of another. It seems to fit how I have been feeling recently. Great song.
toy story managed to put in two of the coolest songs in one movie, this one being one of the saddest songs i've ever heard and the You've got a friend in me - one of the happiest songs i've heard in a child's movie
I do this every time I see the movie. I was crying when he fell and broke his wing. Even when it saw it again recently. I was so small maybe 3 or 4 when my mom put me down in front of the TV to watch the first movie.
On a broad stance, this song is about when a person comes to the realization that all their dreams, fantasies, hopes, and beliefs are nothing more than dreams, fantasies, hopes, and beliefs. That everything that they believed in is false. Let that sink in for a bit, and you'll really get the meaning of the song
It's about realizing your significance in this world. You don't necessarily have to sail the stars to be happy. It's about accepting life as it is and enjoying it for what it is.
This song is about broken dreams, aspirations and a lost sense of purpose. It's a beautifully written song.
Symbolic of growing older and losing our dreams to be astronauts, pro wrestlers, beauty queens, gold medal winners, movie and rock stars then having to settle on the reality of a 9-5 life that is ultimately less fulfilling than the lives we all dream about when we're young
@chaingang342 lol! I thought i couldn't cry in films.. Im a big man now i'm 19!.. but something about it just made me so cry.. I guess it brought me back to when i was a little boy.. :'(
@chaingang342 I'm under the age of 14 and I cried... I'm 12 but I grew up with Toy Story... I'm pretty sure it was the first movie I saw and it's been my favorite ever since then.
@Xienux Throughout the entire 1st movie, Buzz thought he was a real Space Ranger with a mission to stop Zurg, but in this scene/song, he realizes he's not a Space Ranger. There's no mission against Zurg, he has no rocket ship, no Star Command, he can't even fly or shoot his laser; he's a toy for a human kid, and he can no longer act like a real Space Ranger. That's why he'll "go sailing no more."
365rl, I applaud your description, but I'm afraid Xienux may have been referring to what Randy Newman was implying in the song's lyrics, rather than its purpose in Toy Story.
Randy is imagining/dreaming of himself as the captain of a ship (a vessel) that is capable of flying through space. I'm sure you've seen artist depictions of such. Quite simply, he produces these scenes in his head, but is never granted the opportunity to actually fly, or sail, or live the life he dreams of.
It's about Buzz realising that his entire life, everything he believed in and knew about himself are complete lies and never happened. His realising that he isn't an intergalactic world saving super hero space captain.. He's just a toy.
@philipsdisc1 Well not lies, Buzz just misunderstood things. I just so happen to agree with your slightly less gloried more realistic reasoning but to each his own.
This is most-definitley a Buzz Lightyear song, no question about it.
Buzz realizing that his entire life, everything he believed in, thought, knew about himself, etc. are complete lies & they never happened.; I agree.
Mainly, the part where he tries to fly out the window at Sid's house, he fails at it & he realizes that Woody was right, the whole time in terms of Buzz being just a toy, he's completely crest-fallen & in denial, over it.
@philipsdisc1 No no no, Furious is right, because he's talking about what Randy meant with the song. Not about what Buzz means with the song. You're right about what Buzz means. Peace out.
@philipsdisc1 Did you even read the comment that he wrote? I quote: "...but I'm afraid Xienux may have been referring to what Randy Newman was implying in the song's lyrics, rather than its purpose in Toy Story..."
@Furious321 it is a representation of childhood, ive seen an interview of newman talking about it. as a child you feel that you can be anything, the song is about realising that you are a normal person and that the world isn't as it seemed all those years ago. something im just coming to terms with now :(
@Furious321 i think that is simply beacuse buzz arrived with a spaceSHIP... usually travelling in space is compared to sail with a ship between galaxies, like a STAR SAILOR... buzz will never leave again from 'earth' so he cannot sail no more in space. obviously i think that the meaning of the song is clearly that our dreams are defeated from reality (just like happened to buzz) (sorry for my bad description, i'm italian and it's hard to explain this concepts not in my language :) )
It's about Buzz's feelings after he realizes he's a toy. The ship that "sailed far beyond the moon" was the spaceship Buzz imagined he had as a space ranger. All the "brave things he'd done", his adventures (as seen in Buzz Lightyear of Star Command) vanished after he realized they were not real.
I could go on, but I guess that's all that really needs to be said at this point... ^^;
@Xienux Randy Newman sings about what he sees. It's exactly what's happening in the movie as he's singing it. Watch as it happens. It happens in his other songs too. Mainly the Toy Story songs and also in Bug's life.
@Xienux This song is about Buzz, but the crisis Buzz went through ultimately represents the same crisis that most people go through in life. That time when you are finally forced to realize that your hopes and ambitions will never come to fruition...your life will be nothing of particular significance. You will be an average Joe who does his normal every day job until retirement. You will not explore the world. You will not make any great discoveries that impact the entire human race. (cont.)
@Xienux (Cont.) Basically, there comes a time when we all have to face reality for what it is, rather than for what we want it to be. This song is about how Buzz feels when he is forced to do this, but at the same time it is about something we can all relate to.
@alph42 even though most what u said is true for most people, it still doesnt hurt to dream and follow your heart. for a lot of people, their hopes and dreams is what gets them through the day, so i say everyone should keep dreaming and believe that they can do what they want to do :)

he dosent want to sail because he cant fly then he thinks he can fly but he cant and then he doubts himself again?...or it was made for this movie?
bcar54 1 year ago
I like this song.
But to be honest i have no idea what it's actually about, so he's a sailor, but he wants to fly, and he will never sail again?
Xienux 1 year ago 8
@Xienux Throughout the entire 1st movie, Buzz thought he was a real Space Ranger with a mission to stop Zurg, but in this scene/song, he realizes he's not a Space Ranger. There's no mission against Zurg, he has no rocket ship, no Star Command, he can't even fly or shoot his laser; he's a toy for a human kid, and he can no longer act like a real Space Ranger. That's why he'll "go sailing no more."

@Xienux

@Furious321
No no no.
It is completely about Buzz Lightyear! obviously!

@philipsdisc1
Ironic, isn't it???
This is most-definitley a Buzz Lightyear song, no question about it.
Buzz realizing that his entire life, everything he believed in, thought, knew about himself, etc. are complete lies & they never happened.; I agree.
Mainly, the part where he tries to fly out the window at Sid's house, he fails at it & he realizes that Woody was right, the whole time in terms of Buzz being just a toy, he's completely crest-fallen & in denial, over it.
Perfect!
tthomaselli2 1 year ago
@philipsdisc1 No no no, Furious is right, because he's talking about what Randy meant with the song. Not about what Buzz means with the song. You're right about what Buzz means. Peace out.

@philipsdisc1 Did you even read the comment that he wrote? I quote: "...but I'm afraid Xienux may have been referring to what Randy Newman was implying in the song's lyrics, rather than its purpose in Toy Story..."
azerskater 1 year ago
@Furious321 it is a representation of childhood, ive seen an interview of newman talking about it. as a child you feel that you can be anything, the song is about realising that you are a normal person and that the world isn't as it seemed all those years ago. something im just coming to terms with now :(
BVOcean 1 year ago
@Furious321 i think that is simply beacuse buzz arrived with a spaceSHIP... usually travelling in space is compared to sail with a ship between galaxies, like a STAR SAILOR... buzz will never leave again from 'earth' so he cannot sail no more in space. obviously i think that the meaning of the song is clearly that our dreams are defeated from reality (just like happened to buzz) (sorry for my bad description, i'm italian and it's hard to explain this concepts not in my language :) )
MorbosDevilGrinder 1 year ago
@Xienux its a metapohr. you sail in a ship. a ship beyond the stars is a spaceship. hes in a spaceship thing.

@Xienux
I could go on, but I guess that's all that really needs to be said at this point... ^^;

(cont.)
alph42 10 months ago
@Xienux (Cont.) Basically, there comes a time when we all have to face reality for what it is, rather than for what we want it to be. This song is about how Buzz feels when he is forced to do this, but at the same time it is about something we can all relate to.
alph42 10 months ago
@alph42 even though most what u said is true for most people, it still doesnt hurt to dream and follow your heart. for a lot of people, their hopes and dreams is what gets them through the day, so i say everyone should keep dreaming and believe that they can do what they want to do :)

Out among the stars I sail
Way beyond the moon
In my silver ship I sail
A dream that ended too soon
Now I know exactly who I am

And I will go sailing no more
