I have to agree with you 7C. JoeJ is looking at things far too simplistically and has missed the key points. There is no recovery without the consumer, and the market is up in nominal terms only. Add in the decrease of the dollar and you see how far behind you really are vs the rest of the world. Add in again the prospect of higher interest rates and increased taxes, plus a loss of anything worth while to export to other countries and you'll quickly see the box you're in as far as a country goes

As far as company profits are concerned, you will see in most cases it is not top-line growth, but cost cutting that is getting them to profitability. Long term this is a positive to be sure for the company so take heart, but the companies are less and less part of the American fabric meaning although most will recover, it may not result in much of a boost for Americans in the short to medium term.

Recovery will come, but it is a long, long way out for the American consumer in general.

Before the great depression the stock market had hit an all time high. The stock market isn't an indicator of economic health. Prices can get bid up from their real market value by investors speculating. Overpaid is the term that comes to mind.
