  • Sometimes I try to find songs between albums that I think are related. I definitely think this song, Roman Candle, and No Name #4 are all about the same situation. I kind of think Southern Belle is too. I like to think that the song Happiness is him making peace with that situation, though that may be a stretch.

  • <3 you Elliot

  • There is a reversed breath at 2:12 after the last "stop this crime"

    its so... cool.

  • The line is: Killing time won't stop this CRYING. Not crime.

    Please fix it if possible.

  • gotta love that middle 8 .. it allways seems to make me wanna scream it out for some reason <3 ya elliott

  • She whispred quiet terror news.

I loves Elliott. My muse and peerless teacher.

  • I recently bought this album, the only one I hadn't really listened to. Now it's the current favorite. It reminds me of my parents fighting...

  • Harmonica seems like the next step.

  • I've always thought "killing time won't stop this crying" could be taken with two meanings. The figurative; that just wasting time won't make you feel better, and the literal; going on a violent binge won't help you either. I believe the whole roman candle album is sort of a quiet shy boy trying to overcome a violent insular rage.

  • @pandaprince16

    It's "crime" not "crying".

  • @TwilightFadez

According to the person who put the lyrics online it says "crying" but I always thought he said crime. I hate when people replace a song meaning with their own, but that's how it is for everyone, so.. Maybe you should just let him say crying like always, it's up to you.

  • i think elliott smith is the only person who can use the phrase "give a hoot" and make it serious. i don't really know how to explain it :p

  • i know what you mean

  • @charleysaysrawr haha that's EXACTLY what i thought the first time i heard this song! he was one of a kind.

  • @charleysaysrawr i know what u mean too.. like he uses it in a subtle way. true artists can make you ignore certain words and hear others the way they want.

  • Man the internal pain and torture this dude suffered has given us this wonderful music and for that i can only thank Elliot Smith and may god bless his tortured soul.

Anyone have a link to the guitar tab for this tune.

  • @MusicDefinesAll Cute, it's religious assumption and cynical suggestion of suicide all rolled into one. Way to go for the gold, champ.

  • @Galefox You know I'm just joking man, (:

  • "Killing time won't stop this crying"...

    How fucking true!!!

  • The lyrics in the info are wrong. It should be: "Kiling time won't stop this crying"

  • My fav Elliot Smith song of the moment. His musisis amazing, gets the most emotion outta me out of anything I listen to.

  • i know exactly what you mean, sometimes those emotions aren't the ones i want tho. haha

  • kereeen juaraa...

  • This song got me threw tthis last week.

  • her name was just a broken sound...

  • Yeah Elliott is a genius, a life time of art trapped inside a human being. However this song is about abortion listen to the lyrics closely.

  • He was, and will always be the greatest songwriter ever...

  • i love his voice. it trembles like he's under water or something :)

  • Roman Candle = y favorite album at the moment. Wonder what it'll be next month?

  • i know its hard to pick a favourite from all of elliotts songs. but if i was forced to pick one this would be it. i love the melody, i love his voice, i love the lyrics, and i love killing time! shame its one of about 5 songs where there is no live version.

  • i agree with u it is very very hard, i find everyday theres another e smith song that im in love with and get cought in my head for the day, but if i had to pick one song as my fav it would probably be twilight, but they are all sooo good, god i love e smith and all his music, not to mention he is the only artist that i like to do cover songs too!! love u e smith

  • i cover no name #5, roman candle, miss misery, angeles, everything remindes me of her, angel in the snow, half right, happiness, waltz #2 and i am working out clementine at the minute. i would do them all but i have a terrible memory so cant fit all the lyrics in my head. they are a bit to sad for the people in my town. but i dont care i play them anyway.

  • he actually did play it live, hard to find though and the recording quality is pretty rough. january 98 at la luna.

  • where can you find this audio?

  • @isolationeitheror

yeah id love to hear it ive just been looking for it for the past 20 minutes or something. i figured maybe he didnt play that one live? theres two guitars playing simultaneously and then the harmonica so i dont see how he could without some assistance.

  • Me and my girlfriend went to puerto vallarta on vacation and we listened to this song about 30 times. We recently separated. This song still makes me feel like she's on the beach with me killing time...

  • Her name was just a broken sound; stutter step you hear when your falling down....

and that BEAUTIFUL lyric doesn't even hold a candle to some of the stuff he wrote later on in his life.

I don't believe in God, but God fucking bless Elliott. <3

    XO

  • This track is on his debutalbum (and in my opinion, his best) roman candle

  • it's funny i thought i knew every song of his but when i listen to the no name ones they are all new to me...were most of them not on his albums or something?

  • no names #1-4 are on the roman candle album. #5 is on either or

and #6 was on a more obscure album.

    My personal favorites are 1-3

  • @gaara425 yeah i'm completely blown away by this!! i love though that i keep coming across these obscure tracks.. hearing a new Elliott Smith song is like finding some chocolate in your pantry you completely forgot you had.. ya know what I mean? like a really really awesome treat.. ok i'm rambling

  • @gaara425 By now you probably know this...but you gotta get the Roman Candle album. I love all of Elliott's stuff, but it is early albums and the Heatmiser stuff that really deserves some attention!

  • @gaara425 no name#6 was a B-side and never officially released

  • @STCN0B0DY no name#6 was with Division Day single

  • if anyone knows the chords to this song, it would be a big help.

  • I'd kill to see him play this live.

  • Great then! I've got to say Elliott got his own quality and no one can replace it I guess.

Too pity it's not easy to get his album in here, I have XO and figure 8

  • thanks
