I only own Fords. So many other brands have had so many problems. My Fords, including my 2003 Windstar have been very dependable. I tried to clean that one as much as possible in the winter to remove the salt.
I have a 1999 Ford Windstar van. Ford Co. sent me a letter urging me to get the axle checked for free because of this problem. I appreciate their caring attitude. The Ford dealer checked it, and the axle was fine, so I get to keep my Windstar.
I sometimes take the van to the car wash and have the underside sprayed to remove rust-causing salt deposits.
Good companies follow the 99%+1% rule: 99% tradition, and 1% new growth -- which is where mistakes happen. All companies must grow to survive.
► I still have my Ford Windstar. It still stands but can't go anywhere now that it has reached the point of the AX4S transmission failure (at 132.4k miles). It passed the rear axle inspection because it really has not been exposed to snowy salt-ridden roads for longer than those involved in what is displayed above.
the exact thing happend to my uncle in 2002, hes O.K Just scratched The Sides of his car And Broke His windows! his windstar sucks just because of what happend!
The Windstar's Breaking Rear Axle . The '05-'06 Super Duty's "Death Wobble" . The 4.6L, 5.4L and 6.8L Motors spitting out spark plugs left and right . The Firestone/Explorer Recall . The F-150's Airbags Deploying without cause... . I am a Ford guy but I am starting to think Ford needs to pull its weight. Having your vehicle suddenly accelerate isn't sounding to bad LOL
my neighbor is always like. my windstar is so much safer then your grand caravan. ya the caravan had some recalls, but not like this. that's messed up.
@Tyler89able in 96 the windstar got the safest rating of all minivans including the caravan. that same study also showed that the toyota minivan is a death trap
@MrVnick1 im sorry you feel that way. just like to let you know that my 69 ford ltd, 03 explorer, and 03 mustang run fine and have absolutely no problems with them. my 95 windstar was also great until the transmission went at a little over 150K miles as the result of heavy trailer pulling for twelve years
Oh, wow. Hey all you Ford freaks, Toyota doesnt have a recall on the Sienna that has the axels snapping and causeing the vehicle to roll. Wow, so stop getting on all of us Toyota fans cases. Im glad that my mom's old 98 Windstar didnt have this happen, and that her 01 Sequoia never will. lol.
@fuzzaun how do you now they didnt change the design halfway through the prouduction, besaide this recall covered 98-03 model years so it really doesnt matter what year
I still have a deadly Ford Granada that I don't drive any more. It is a 2.8 litre automatic built in Cologne. ALL models will have the same fault of only one pump on the automatic transmission. If the fuel is low and a steep descent is attempted the engine will stall. Power assistance to the steering then stops and the brake servo ceases to work. (the transmission will not turn the engine as there is no hydraulic pump on the output shaft) Controlling the car then requires brute force. DEADLY!
@AspireAS5920 there's already so many recalled. About 600,000+ . And I'm worrying that my mom's van, a 2004 freestar, could eventually have a similar problem. It's almost mechanically the exact same thing
Selling it doesn't solve the problem, Darkdivine. Doesn't sound like i can appeal to your concern for your fellow man so i'll try to appeal to your concern for your own well-being. *You* could be the one in the oncoming traffic when the new owner of your Windstar loses control and crosses the line into the front end of your new car. It's free to fix it so just call a dealer and have it done.
i seen this on the news and i was like holy shit that could be me and my windstar. good thing i am selling it soon or that might happen going down a road then into on coming traffic
Hey, Ford has been down this devious road before, remember? You don't? Well there is the Ford Pinto if you recall. Ford had the gas tank located right in the back of the car so when it was rear ended, it would catch fire. Rather than recall and fix it, Ford found it more profitable to wait until people died or tried to sue them instead. Once again, Greed triumphs over human lives. I have and never will own a Ford.
@TheNapski And the Explorer problems in the late 90's, too many were rolling and Ford didnt care, until them and firestone were sued. Im glad that my mom sold her Windstar now, not only did the motors have recalls for weak head gaskets, the rear ends were flimsey as fuck. Its Toyota or Honda or GM for me here on out. lol
@Motorfordtoyota I'm certainly not a fan of windstar minivans (my family had one too), but i hope the new owner of your family's van will avoid an accident
@Porsche1080 Im pretty sure that van is in a junk yard now. Judging by the way the people we sold it to treated it durring the test drive, and driving off. It was floor it, ect. My dad kept that thing in Mint condition while we had it. Unfortunately, he didnt do the same to my moms current 01 Sequoia. lol
@TheNapski What everybody forgets to mention is that the so-called problem with the Pinto, the gas tank location, was standard practice for all cars in that class at the time. If you look at the actual safety record of the car, and not just the news reports, you'll find the Pinto was perfectly average. In the case of the Windstar, the rear axle isn't what I'd be worried about. I'd be worried about the puny little econo-car transmission that's hooked to a giant van with best-in-class torque!
If you think that the noise on this video is drama. I can only imagine what you would call the fact that so many lives had been lost due to this flaw for the past 10 years.
@brettlhupfer1 WOW if you thind thats drama, then your retarded, the microphone is clearly mounted under the van somewhere near the axle. This is a NHTSA video, so I highly doubt it was fake

Thanks god this will never happen here in mexico because of the weather conditions
Theres no snow, tornados, extreme climatic condidtions that will make the rear axle rust as fast as possible
My dad owns one back in 2005 annd it still in very very well conditions
And its only 55k miles so low mileage
