Various cultures throughout history and in many different places had varying attitudes regarding what you could or could not 'bare' to the world. You specifically mentioned the middle east, while there may be a tiny segment of people who believe how you're describing, the overwhelming people that hate us do so because we are strong allies with Israel. We could have no fobs or embassies here and they'd still hate us for that reason. I've met alot of different types of muslims, the one common shared thought between the moderates and fundamentalists is a hate for the jews and Israel.
